2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

"Like a teenager headed to the Melbourne Show with a fist full of pocket money and dreams of big showbags, St Kilda has its money and is spending it all."

If anything screams "OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUDS" about the HS this is it :tearsofjoy:
The **** else are we going to do with our money? Give it to charity?

I agree we need to target a player who can play full back to replace Howard. It looks like Caminiti will be moved forward next year, so we will have a heap of 2nd-3rd defenders. We desparately need a 200cm key big bodied key defender who can handle the big power forwards. Jordan Butts from Adelaide is not getting a game might be a good pick up.

Perhaps we have some targetted in the draft?
While Ross said he think Caminiti is a fwd, I just don't see him staying there. He seemed like a natural defender.

I’d argue that Sharman’s number one strength is that he’s a natural footballer. His foot skills, both his entries and his finishing skills are elite. The more the ball is in his hands the better for us.

If we retain Marshall, then you’re trying to fit the following into 7 spots:
King, Ro/TDK, Owens, Higgins, Ryan, Sharman, Hall, testing mid and potentially Tauru.

Team balance is absolutely a consideration and of those listed Sharman is the only one with the obvious traits to play as a tall attacking wingman in the mould of Wood.
That's fair - he's got great basics and is a very clean player so having him around the ball would make us better. But he's also the only player I trust to kick a set shot so I hate having that away from goal. Especially if King and Owens are playing deeper given we never know how they will kick it.

I do not rate Caminiti at all. We really need to target a full back if we can.
The man is neither a backman nor a forward; the only reason he is playing AFL is due to his height.
In fact, im not sure he is a footballer
Football, as the name states, requires the player to kick the ball. This man just does not have the ability.

Yeah, this is a weird take.

He has shown plenty. At either end of the ground, and for his 3 years in the system he has been the ONLY genuine tall at the end he has played down bar a small sample playing with Max.

That;s a harsh take. I don't like him much as a fwd - more likely to injure Max than do anything positive and am not sure he'd pass the grade 4 naplan test but as a backman I reckon he's ok. Crude, but ok.

Hammer is studying engineering, so I’m sure he’d have the test covered actually

The H-Sun have been guilty of this today too, but everyone seems to be treating Caminiti like he's essential.

Surely the moves so far, both confirmed and rumoured, let everyone know that the club see Caminiti as versatile depth.

Also, we're not playing Wilkie, Tauru, Silvagni and Howard (or Aleer) in the same back six.

Right now with only the confirmed additions I see the team next year as

Stocker Howard Wilkie
Sinclair Silvagni Clark
Hill NWM Wilson
Hall Sharman Butler
Higgins King Marshall
De Koning Steele Windhager
Travaglia Macrae Owens Phillipou Garcia

Only allowed 4 cat A rooks based on our set up. We were able to ditch Crouch for Boyd on that list. So Crouch doesn't exist on any active Rookie lists and Boyd was delisted. Meaning its just Hammer and Hall in cat A but Hammer will have to be upgraded.

Hence why I said Crouch was on our Rookie list this season. He retired and was removed from it.

Father/son eligibility only applies for your draft year and the one immediately after so I don't think we can pre-list Voss as a F/S any more

Not in the rules that I have read, and which I have shared and posted in this thread earlier.

If you have a rule stating what you have written please share. Thank you.

If Marshall leaves. He would be starting CHF.

Jsos in surely - surely means Tauru is going forward which would be brilliant. Can't wait for the Brains Trust track watching reports saying he's training with the forwards.

In the forward group I kind of fear for Owens - I have huge wraps on the guy but his field and goal kicking is not great (his goal kicking accuracy is actually good on the stats sheet but I would love to see that with OOF and 'didn't make the journey' included). So yeah I just wonder about his role. Disposal by foot not good enough for wing and we don't seem to want to use him as a big inside mid.

Owens is strangely accurate when kicking for goal in open play and he is actually quite effective as a oversized crumber. His set shot snaps are also good enough. ּBut it is absolutely essential that he fixes his set shot drop punts and should make that his number one priority over the off-season.

It's a tough one but he has too many strengths to leave out of the side I think. He is as strong as a bull and is probably the least likely forward to be outmarked while grappling with a defender — King and Sharman are run and jump players. He also draws so many free kicks because defenders can't handle him, and he is a good runner and gets up and down the wings.

In a perfect world, Mitch's role is to be the forward who engages the defenders in the pack which allows King/Sharman/Keeler/Ryan to come across for the mark.

Yep.

And if Howard is injured, he's FB.
And if Wilkie is injured, he's BP.
And if Silvagni is injured, he's CHB.
And if Sharman is injured, he's CHF.
And if King is injured, he's FF.

Caminiti will be versatile depth. He will play when required.

If Owens doesnt improve his kicking on goals, I can see him struggling to hold his place in the side moving forward as the other kids develop.

Forward line:

Higgins King Sharman
Ryan Caminiti Hall

If Marshall is not traded he plays the 4th tall forward/rucking role. Then RTB also like to rotate the developing mids through HF Phillipou, Wilson, Garcia then we still have Wood, Butler and Hill to fit in. Owens brings that great contest but if he is not contributing on the scoreboard he might be in trouble.
Bit hard on Owens I reckon. He is constantly asked to play on bigger defenders, and competes like an animal.

Give him a third tall defender and he monsters them I reckon.

Also, this idea that Owens is slow or can't play midfield is a Ross Lyon fallacy. How many opportunities have other blokes being given in the middle.

He will get there given the opportunity, he is a contested machine.

Its worth nothing that NAS had to tell Lyon he wanted to play midfield, it most definitely was not a Ross initiative.

He really struggles to be adaptive does stubborn old Ross.

Buy into RTBs method. Commit to hard work, 100% effort.

We get this or better for an entire season.

Enjoy.

(Also, notice how many big players JSoS plays on in these clips? Pushes Xerri around, playing on Cameron)

Holy ****! Watching him going from streaming out of the middle hitting someone lace out, to a 2 minute straight compilation of him hitting it down the throats of their mids (even made Motlop look like a mid)... Makes you wonder how good the likes of NAS, Garcia, Pou are going to look with that kind of service. Clearly checked out once he signed our contract mid year

Agree, I’ve long felt that Owens will be very good in a better team.

Far out our strength and conditioning team are going to be critical.

If we can have King, Phillipou, Henry, Ryan and JSOS fit and firing then the sky is the limit.

Don't sleep on Henry - the few times he has played without injury he has looked like peak Shai Bolton.

Sorry bud - I took a look through your posts, but couldn’t see it. I’ve been wondering this for a long time. One of the draft experts had said along the lines that FS no longer applies, but I’m not sure what the rule is or whether that is accurate.
