Same as Pyke. Our overarching selection philosophy limits our productive ceiling. Not just the midfield, Smith too. We waste valuable opportunities on players that we know will bring us fringe type performances instead of trying to find out if there’s a difference maker toiling away in the 2s.

Collingwood fielded two players that had played under 10 games last night, while we rolled out Brodie Smith who thought he could still kick a goal from 75 meters out

I think that's a little bit extreme. They booed because the media driven circus told us that Moore and Quaynor were the ones behind Rankine being suspended. We can also disagree with what Rankine said though.

It's footy. Booing happens for an array of reasons.
No, Rankine was the reason behind Rankine being suspended. Nobody is to blame but himself and whether people booed for the loose reason you're alluding to, the optics of it still look awful.

It's only gonna get worse unfortunately.

And whats even worse is the hypocrisy. Why aren't there calls to have Emirates banned as a sponsor of AFL teams? They are owned by a government that bans homosexuality. Surely thats pretty bloody offensive. Are the Rainbow Crows upset by that?

Players wearing the emirates name on their Guernsey saying they are trying to make it a more inclusive game.

Given how he was tracking last year, I’d say he’s been our most disappointing player. I reckon this might be his ceilings. Lacks a bit of class.

Fair point based on last year but I think everyone needs to reduce their expectations of Soligo. There is a reason why he was pick 36 and he is only 22.

The problem is, we now know something about some of our guys we didn't before.

Thilthorpe, Fog, Soligo, Dawson, Peatling etc et cetc

None stands up to finals pressure.

If this is the result of the rebuild, we're ****ed.
Just like Darren Jarman in the 1991 GrandFinal.

Looked great in the minor round and then went missing in the Grand Final ….never to be seen again.

Such an enjoyable year has been destroyed.

Just read this thread. Only half is about footy, and even that has turned to poo.

There are zero guarantees we have another good year next year.

Let’s just hope the Rankine moment isn’t another Camp moment. People say it’s an overreaction but the initial evidence is concerning.

Ugly: The crowd. Booing Quaynor? WHY. flipping ridiculous. If you were one of those people take a good, long, hard look at yourself please.
Quaynor was always getting booed at. He needs to be grateful it wasn't a Port game and he would have had nail polish bottles thrown at him.

Angry mobs need to vent. It's why umpires get so much shit. It's not the person per se, it's the system and we love to feel like the world is against us. That's how it goes.

Hate to say it but cox was the difference between 10 intercept marks for our defenders and bringing the ball down for sidebottom to feast on.

Well that stuff happens all the time. Players antagonize others to get them to make mistakes when frustrated. We see it all the time - provoked players will give away a free kick, will give away 50, punch a bloke (Lynch), use a bad word (Rankine).

In the cut throat industry that is professional sport I think it's smart to provoke. Collingwood were smart to target Rankine and it resulted in them easily beating us in the QF.
Point is, it should be generally more okay (but not completely, obviously) to provoke certain actions, but not others. Punching a bloke (gravely hurting an individual), threatening death (ie W Rioli) and saying such a word (gravely hurting a community), should fall into the category of ‘not others’

How much blame should be placed on the AFL for leaking our defense in what is supposed to be a confidential procedure?

It's not like the club explicitly told fans to target the players that targeted Rankine
Very valid point

Next home game against Collingwood - Crows crowd cheers Quaynor all game.

Media headline - 'Terrifying bronx cheers stuns footy world as footy star cops abuse again'

This is the worst take yet, yikes. Why would we even want to be muttered in the same breath as a Port home game. The system was evident before Rankine's slur, and he was lucky to only get 4 weeks given prior examples.

I agree to an extent. But the fact that the suspension wasn't wrose shows that there is much more to the story. The media and AFL have intimated that Quaynor and Houston were involved in targeted attacks and that is the reason for the lower punishment.

The crowd reacted to that!

He either used the slur or he didn't, thats all the story needed.

Retaining Bond was a shocking call. For all the moaning about Murphy that selection call was the worst of the year. Could easily have picked someone else and played Michalanney in defence.

A few good performances but honestly was a comprehensive loss. Hopefully some of it is down to a lack of finals experience.
Michalanney on Elliott was so obvious that our coaches outsmarted themselves. You just set and forget that matchup.

I am not condoning this at all, so settle down please. I am not here to offend. Rankine deserved what he got. But my point stands if you read the post.

Bit of a worry when you hear nicks say we won stoppage around the ground therefore the midfield was not the main issue.

The midfield got destroyed in open play. Also the stoppages Collingwood won were effective as they ran it out with handball. Our mids win stoppage and slam it down a Collingwood players throat. I do agree sometimes it’s the forwards fault for not competing harder in the air

Chuck the stats sheet out nicksy, it’s blinding you to the true fact of the main issue

This is where Brodie Smith thought he could kick a goal from, with 6 minutes to go, with free players inside the 50

Why do some people keep saying this?

Anyone who was at the game would clearly know this wasn't the case. Aside from Houston, Quaynor copped the loudest boos. Heck, the boos for him were probably even louder than for that thug.

It was honestly an embarrassment, and that's made the club public enemy #1 for all the wrong reasons.
I was at the game.
