Give em Jamarra and a pack of chips. They are a feeder club for the bigger clubs like us. Should know their place, perennially stuck in 10-15.

It wasn't that long ago that we were shoulder to shoulder with them in the gutter, looking at the stars.

Bit rich calling them a feeder club, don't forget your roots.

We should be aiming to seriously content in 2027. Buss and JOD with more experience. Freijah entrenched in our mid rotation. Sanders and Haynes solid in the 22 and then Butters to top it off.

Tonight's result should be all the proof we need to go hell for leather on a gun back/s this off season. Can't go into next season without sorting it once and for all.
We see it, we express it clearly in many threads.
The buck stops with the coach.
Cheers
Stephen

You could pick up Sam Frost as a F/A and for a moderate wage.

If Sam plays with in his limitations like he did in 2024 for the Hawks, you’ve got your self a full back who is a great mark, who can break even with his opponent.

I feel his disposal is at its best when he pass off short kicks or handballs to team mates. So let your doggie small defenders do the rebounding via run and long kicks.

If young Will Darcy is half as good as his dad and Brother you’ve got your KPD developing whilst Frosty keeps his spot warm.

I feel for Frosty, he had a very good 2024 season.

Would also allow you to keep your cash to invest in your existing stars or a recruit worthy of 1M.

Get a KPD who can break even with his opponents in 2026 and I feel the doggy’s will be very dangerous and making finals again.

Frost is a decent depth option, but personally I don't think he is really a big upgrade on our current guys, especially with natural improvement expected for JOD / Buss going into next season. If we are bringing him in to be a starting KPD for us, we are just going to be in a similar position this time next year with a back 6 that wasn't good enough and looking for an upgrade again at KPD.

Hawks brought in Battle and Barrass over Frost to turn them into contenders and solidify that back line with gun talls, I think that's where we are at also and hoping to do this off-season.

Will Darcy is so lightly built and hasn't shown a ton yet, he's a good 3-4 seasons away most likely from being in these conversations for a saviour in the back line for us.

That could be Jordon Butts or Tylar Young.
I think both would arguably be just as good to get given we'd keep our first rounder.
Both plug and play mature types who lock down FB allowing Lobb & JOD to play looser roles they're better suited to.

Frost would be an upgrade on Buss who is still developing, but his decisions with ball in hand would cause quite a few meltdowns on here.

Agree, however we need to improve our across ground defence in all aspects

Watching Maynard last night, I believe Sellwood will be that type of defender for us. Will bring that real hardness & competitiveness alongside his excellent intercepting game to our backline next year.
He’ll be ready to explode onto the scene after his first pre-season with us.

There will be organic improvement to our defence next year with JOD / Buss as well (as I’ve previously mentioned) but I agree we can’t just rely on that. Which seems like we’re not with who we are targeting.

Has Frosty been at the Hawks long enough to qualify for free agency or is he just OOC?

Footywire lists Frost as just OOC.
I can't imagine he'd cost much at trade time though.

Really like the idea of Lobb being more of a roaming tall next year that helps in the ruck. His strengths disappear when he needs to be responsible for a dangerous forward.
He's great outside of the D50 and shaky when dragged deep. The flow on effect of getting a solid FB should be a real positive for us. JOD as third man up on the air should really suit him too

JOD is the perfect 3rd tall quick decent enough ball user good in the air and on the ground,

We have just never had a Jones/Lobb fit around him to let him play it much

Agree to an extent

I wonder how important the system is vs gun defender?

The system was fine in 2023 when we had Liam Jones locking down FB.

A mature FB and a few tweaks and I think we'll be ok.

Top class key defenders are worth their weight in gold. Consider how Darcy Moore organised and controlled the Pies backline against probably the best key forward lineup in the comp last night. He's definitely the main man in a tight defensive unit. We're unlikely to pick up anyone nearly as good but it's urgent that we bring in a couple of candidates to make our defense stronger. We are trying to do so but to fail is not an option.

The most we have done to address our deficiencies is bring in Liam Jones from the QAFL and throw Lobby behind the ball half way through last season.

Is there ever any longer-term strategy to extract us out of mid-table?

Footscray are flying, which is great. But that’s with a back 6 mostly on their way out, not on their way up.

Whatever we do and whoever we bring in, it’s likely to be more half measures that look very similar to what we’ve seen for years. I’m expecting our annual re-signing of JJ to drop any minute.

Pre 2024 the messaging was that to do the same again and expect different results would be the definition of insanity. Pre 2025 it was double-down on everything and happy days. So which is it?

Whatever the talk will be ahead of 2026, here’s my prediction: We lose just about every game interstate, we lose in Geelong, we lose a couple of games at home, we win against some dross on Thursday nights when the atmosphere resembles a graveyard.

Signing JOD, chasing Payne then later Barrass, using a first round pick on Busslinger, picking up Coffield?

I think we have made efforts. We do need to grab a mature KPD as our no 1 priority and I would be very surprised (and very disappointed) if we didn't get one this trade period.
We've already started shaking trees with Wilkie.
