2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Sure but they have every right to agitate to get out of it, and many do. There's a very, very slim pool of labour to fill this league so like it or not they have power over clubs when it comes to these situations.
So say he is on 700k after year and he had the first two years front loaded to a million, if he wants out should the 600k need to be refunded?
It's not a one way street, if he didnt like the contract, he didn't have to sign it.
Sucks to be him on 700k after year. Can always go back to being an accountant on 150-170k a year.

It's just the way it is. If we don't pony up the reality is he can force his way out. There's a big risk to frontloading contracts for guys in their prime and we aren't the first club to find that out...

I have a feeling we’re going all out to win the vfl next year.
I know some of you have talked about this already, but I think it would be a great move to convince Zac Jones to be the inaugural captain of the modern iteration of the St Kilda VFL team.

He's still a gun at VFL level, would be a lock each week, still playing at the Saints and at Moorabbin and captaining the side would be an honour for the family too, even if its the reserves.

His seniority and professional dedication would be the perfect model for our young guys coming through too. It also frees up a spot in the AFL side where he is realistically only going to be depth or fringe even if he does survive the cut this off season.

The salary drop might be an afront to him if he still thinks he's got more to give at AFL level which he does, but I'd like to think the Saints captaincy might be a proud moment for him too, he's a good clubman and worth keeping around.

His agent has one other middling client. They aren’t agitation stuff all. Club won’t trade him in the next two years at which time he will be much more replaceable through internal development and also much less appealing to opposing clubs.

Just a pre-warning though, if he leaves, mods you'll wanna ban me from this forum!
No need to go all Drama Queen 😉
It’s not going to happen.

No he can't. He has signed a contract. He will be held to it. WTF are you on about?

Yeah.

Copped a 7 day Wilkie thread ban. Because it’s not fair to respond to bulldog supporters and mofra has to defend his pups.
Just about to say beware of the Bulldog mod, absolutely thin skinned. Might as well ban all the Saints posters then they all can have an almighty circle jerk how they are getting Wilkie for a fringe player and a second rounder.

The amount of vitriol about us trying to actually get good... **** these opposition simpletons and that includes the majority of the AFL media. It's us against them and I love it, they'll be crying all the more next year when we make finals.

No he can’t. Unless we let him or he decides not to play, that is literally exactly what he cannot do.

The game is full of examples of when players wanted out or more money and neither happened.

I can see several arguments for and against.

I have no problem with interstate teams playing finals at Geelong. I think you’d run into a problem if it was Collingwood and you’re potentially locking out 60,000 fans, GMHBA 40,000 ? MCG 100,000.

The AFL use crowd numbers to justify all sorts of things. I’d feel aggrieved if I was a Geelong supporter and all of a sudden a home final ended up at the oppositions home ground but when has the afl been fair.
I know this isn't your argument, but I hate this reasoning.

Crowd numbers shouldn't matter. The Cats should never have to play Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond or Essendon at the G as a home game, period.

And I hate the Cats.

They'll happily have Sydney play GWS at the Giants home ground (-25000 potential tickets at a minimum), or Brisbane play at GC's home ground (-12000 tickets).
