Rayner's fine for staging is cancelled out by the fine for being immensely stupid handed down to the geelong player who thought it was a good idea to run in and push the guy who just got a free kick in front of goal for being pushed.

He got awarded free kicks for being pushed on two occassions by the umpires.
How can the AFL then say he staged?
And if the AFL then reinterpret the situation by saying he staged, then Rayner and the Lions have an easy defense simply by saying he was given free kicks by the umpires on both occassions for his opponent pushing him.

He didn’t stage its more did the umpire need to pay it 150m off the ball or just reverse the Geelong shot on goal and have a free kick where it was.

Rayner no where near Selwood in terms of greatness of the game but just saying.
Those little bumps and shoves happen 20 times a game. If you pay one, you have to pay them all. You can't pick just one out specifically. You'd never, not in a billion years, see Stengle or Close or Dempsey get paid that sort of free. But then, they're not Neymar-level floppers and Geelong aren't umpires' darlings the way Brisbane are.
Selwood definitely worked out a technique to draw the frees, but at least he was still aggressively contesting the ball when he did it.
Rayner blatantly diving 150m off the ball like he's been shot from the grassy knoll isn't remotely the same. And he's a much better player than that - he'd be better off actually trying to emulate Selwood and use his attack on the footy to get the easy frees. Not flop like a soccer player.
The Umpires in that game should be stood down for bringing the game into disrepute. Absolute idiocy, Raynor should be fined 50k for staging and if Hansie Cronje were alive he'd be complaining to John that it wasn't enough? The AFL have a mountainous problem with the adjudication of this game, if those incidents provoked that sort of response form these imbeciles then both O'Connor and Guthrie should be cited by the MRO and suspended for 10 weeks! They won't of course because it was frivolous and inconsequential, i would say it was close to being crooked? The AFL should open up an investigation.

These guys must have been quite unlucky or particularly egregious cases considering the amount of incidents that don't get looked at
That would rely on the MRP having any sort of consistency. It more feels like they just randomly pick a few cases every so often. They fined Hobbs for staging when he hit head on someone's knee (overturned on appeal).

There has to be a minimum amount of force for a free to be paid, you can’t be penalised for tapping somebody on the shoulder.
Pay the frees for genuine force. If you don’t see it, don’t ****ing pay it - you can’t guess.

Agreed. Whatever happened prior, it was a blatant bump, right in front of the umpires and, having let things get to this point, the umpires had to prevent things spiralling out of control.
Any complaints should be directed towards how things got to that point in the first place.
As a fan, I couldn't see any benefit in getting angry about it. The whole situation was so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh, and enjoy the way it got the crowd fired up for the rest of the match.
Not allowing these things to affect the outcome and winning in spite of any obstacle also helps.

One of our players got a fine for staging, I think it was at the same game that Daicos dived after Smith did what Daicos done to him and funnily Smith also got fined.

Half the players in the AFL shrug tacklers off or drop knees, it’s a dime a dozen. Diving or staging for free kicks is another thing and an MRO offense.
Will be remembered for the incident whenever people mention his name

I think half of teams salary caps would end up back at the AFL if they started fining for what Cam did

I don't know whether he dived or not, but you can still be a diver and a great player. Those 2 things can be true.
I agree Cam does milk it a bit, wish he'd just focus on contesting and cracking in more.
Still one of those players that isn't consistently elite, but like DeGoey can crack open a game.

The fact it got him a free kick makes matters even worse. The outcome of his staging was significant in the moment and the afl will want to stamp out that sort of behavior. Umpires reacted to the flop, which upon replay was an obvious dive
