Horrible umpiring aside.

I don’t think the first one is a dive. He gets a little nudge (never a free) but because he’s not expecting it it make him go down.

The second one is absolutely a dive but it’s also incredibly stupid from Guthrie and while soft can easily be paid a free kick. It’s also a situation where almost all players milk it the exact way Rayner did so I don’t even blame him

The reality is the first one should just never be paid and I fully expect the umpire to have the rest of the year off in response

The AFL have come out and said it was a wrong decision. This is Finals time and they can't afford to have these clowns ruin the game any further, lucky the game wasn't close, but action should be taken. Those umpires should not be appearing again this series. Rayner fined for staging or given entry into RADA immediately!

What is the point of the umpire up in the box with all the tv angles if not to point these mistakes out to umpires in the moment and say “hang on boys, this one’s not really right, let’s just make it a reversal down where the mark was taken”?

The fact that Rayner just flopped on the ground from a shove that wouldn't have moved me 30cm is astounding. If ever there was a look at me umpiring moment in a final this was it. These things happen all the time in a game that is a body contact sport, but the AFL are not coaching these Umpires properly. Some rules need altering over summer, Rayner pretty much cheated his way to get 2 goals and it was wrong.

Didn’t have an issue with the second one being paid but the first one was no good. The issue is the second one doesn’t happen unless the first one is called so I don’t have an issue with them both being lumped together.

Disappointing from a player I genuinely enjoy watching.

Here’s what pissed me off a bit.

First one was a joke. His feet got tangled a bit but the push wouldn’t knock the cream off a coffee. No free kick.

Guthrie was an idiot and fell for someone clearly trying to bait him. It was a free kick. No problem with it - though the situation wouldn’t have happened if not for the first one.

But what of the half a dozen additional players who THEN come in after THAT free kick has been awarded, giving it the biggun’ who start pushing Guthrie around as well?

Not that I think THOSE incidents deserve free kicks either but who determines what push-and-shoves for tit-for-tat ‘boys being boys’ aggression deserve a free and what ones don’t?

Selwood definitely worked out a technique to draw the frees, but at least he was still aggressively contesting the ball when he did it.

Rayner blatantly diving 150m off the ball like he's been shot from the grassy knoll isn't remotely the same. And he's a much better player than that - he'd be better off actually trying to emulate Selwood and use his attack on the footy to get the easy frees. Not flop like a soccer player.

"But...but...but....Duckwood!" is terribly bad faith arguing, even for BigFooty nuffies. It's not even close to the same thing, yet the consquences on the game are far greater with the off the ball flopping in the goal square.

Everyone remembers Selwood ducking his entire career.

Adam(RIP) did it also.

Shuey did duck for a few seasons and copped a lot of flack for it but the action wasn't much different to what Selwood did, he just didn't have the privilege of Vic media playing defence for him.

The difference being that these players did it over a fairly long time, not as a one-off. Also important to note that regardless of whether you think Rayner dived or not, the bigger issue was the deplorable umpiring, not what Rayner did.

One is a football action that punishes poor tackling technique, and if the free isn't paid, Selwood completes the play regardless. He did this on many occasions to escape tackles successfully.

The other belongs in a Hollywood production or theatre play, perfectly fitting a comedy that gets the audience to groan at the absurdity of it all.
