2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

If Roma goes, we likely have 2 First round picks this year or next.

Even if he stays, we lost this years and bring in Flanders - who we all agree is probably worth a first of some sorts on his own.

I do however take note that Caro gets this exclusive and DOES NOT rule out Cmac.

Either way, future firsts all remain. A lot of youth on the list that ensures no impact to build for 12 months.
Anyone have the Age article text?

Aleer isn't the answer.
Was just going to ask.
Missed the first half. How has he been going?
Bloody Hawks.
Giants disappointing again - going purely by the score.

Eagles will play hardball given Ryan is contracted and they need experience, not more late draft picks...

I reckon they target Collard in a 1-1 (which we will push back on or course)...

Collard for Ryan plus a future 3rd rounder to the saints?
Not a chance.
Not giving up a player like Collard who can be really special fir us in the future for a 29 year old.

Of whether we trade for him. Takes their third best forward but doesn't offer much as an intercept defender. Doesn't use the ball particularly well either. He's a very good athlete but not a great footballer.
Ross is up there, we have JSOS, might save us 700k a year and target someone else maybe?

how did we only pay 83% this year I thought the floor was like 90-95%
83% represented our entire lists payment for the year.

12% of the cap was used to forward pay deals from 2026.

The 83% also represented paying for crouch and part of Billings contract.

Not good, I'm not sure what our recruiters see in him but I doubt he will even be in our best 22 now that we have got JSOS.

We need a big key defender like Aliir Aliir, Port got a bargain when they got him from the Swans, I don't think we need Aleer.

From that Age article:

"Lyon had rejected the prospect of Jack Silvagni back in early August, but changed his tune by the end of the home-and-away season and urged Allan to secure the deal.

On Saturday the coach will be in the stands at Engie Stadium watching another defender, the Giants’ Leek Aleer, before making a final call on whether to pursue him"

I think as the contracts we previously paid, we didn't save it as such, just that it is available this year to be spent as part of the 18.3 million salary cap.
So 2 x 5% saved = 1.83 million
Extra 17% unspent this year = 3.111 million
So at least 4.941 to spend before taking into account what we paid Billings and Crouch or if we are paying 105% of the cap this year. That could be maybe another 1.5 million.
Oodles of cap space

Someone could explain to him how we pronounce 'defence' in Australia.
He says 'dee-fense', the 'd50', attack is 'offense'. Go get a job on ESPN if you want to be a yank.
Oh, and my favorite of JRs: He used his creativeness to find a target...
FFS

We're probably only a few years away from a Fox commentator using 'versing'.
I’ll take odds of that

1-3 Riewoldt. j , J Lewis , E Betts ,

1-5 Dermott ,

I wouldn't believe anything that comes out of Caroline Wilson's mouth, especially after her almost slanderous story about Nas not wanting to play with Tex due to his racist comments that he made years ago. The fact that she was factually incorrect and didn't apologise says a lot about her character & integrity. I reckon half the sh!t in her article is made up.

GWS forward line is dysfunctional.
More forward entries but can't score from them
Hawks doing it easy in their forward - half
Gunston is a very clever footballer who rarely misses a set shot on goal.

What was the question? Aleer far from the GWS biggest issue
He’s been ok, he has some things to like. I still can’t see where he fits into our side but as a cordy replacement it’s fair enough.

It’s down to do we still need him and how much will it cost us.

I reckon, it's a no

Nope, what is the point in trading a kid for a 29 year old. If they play hard ball qe walk away and spend the money on someone else.
Player managers are watching.

Surely sanity prevails. I didn’t see the need for Aleer when we had Wilkie, Caminiti and Tauru- with Howard another option, with us having just spent a valuable pick in a strong draft on Barrat, and with Keeler showing he can play down back if needed- so why in the wide world we’d feel the need to get him now that we have SOSOS as well is just bewildering to me.

He doesn’t seem any better than Caminiti (who’s barely done an AFL preseason) now, yet Hammer is still just a baby in AFL key position terms, so surely he takes big steps forward over the next two years. Which could make him much better than Aleer is now, when he’s the age Aleer is now.

In regards to Liam Ryan

I can see a world where our first and Hawthorns first which is owned By West Coast is involved

But at the moment that pick is losing value
