16 wins, so not throwing the baby out with the bathwater but areas for improvement.

Wings - Thought this was a deficiency this year, NOD and Sharp had poor years

Small forward - Hopefully Dudley can become the Walters replacement.

Big mid - Feel sometimes we get monstered in the middle, as good as Andy, Serong and Young are, a bigger body could help. Hopefully Johnson can become that player.

Banfield, Worner and Ryan need to be replaced. Our defence success is made up of our key talls and a hard working midfield and it’s not going to cut it if better cattle can’t be found. I feel bad for Ryan but he’s not going to be any more mobile, fitter, faster or a better kick in 2026.

Next season was the one earmarked as the best chance. Darcy and Young not having a preseason cost us this season.

The window has opened. Getting there will depend on fixing the issues in the bottom half of the list.

In a way I'm glad that we will be past our veterans era which if anything held us back this year.

We don't need anything magical, just need Simpson, Reid, Erasmus, Johnson, NOD, Dudley to take the next step and for our best players to hold their level.

McVee and Cooper down back to give our backline a more attacking dimension. Raz (hopefully) Johnson and NOD to step up and support the "Big 3" in the middle and Dudley to have a strong preseason and put pressure on guys like Frederick. The list is on good shape I think, the issue as always lies with coaching, both JL and the line coaches.

Forward line
---------------
Pros
  • Voss is a gem. Nearly 40 goals as the 2nd/3rd option. Cult figure status too.
  • Treacy is the leader we've been crying for since Pav up forward
  • We don't deserve Reid.
  • Amiss in spurts. Positive he was carrying something. Expecting a huge 2026
  • Dudley is quality, 1st proper pre-season will be huge for him

Cons
  • Switta continuing not able to stay healthy
  • Sturt/Walters hurt all year

Other
  • Bolton starting slow, finished well for the season.
  • Freddy being hot & cold. No in between. His best is a match winner, worst is momentum killing

Midfield
---------------
Pros

  • Serong, Brayshaw, Jackson all stars
  • Johnson & Erasmus stepping up into AFL quality players
  • Darcy playing consistent footy

Cons
  • Sharp fall off a cliff with his form
  • Young's injuries this season.

Other
- JOM & NOD - In & out of form too much. NOD looked fantastic early, then the foot/ankle flare up saw the end of it. The way JOM played his 200th? I don't think there's a 201st

Defense
---------------
Pros

  • Clark our best, star.
  • Probably best overall year from Cox, outside of 2-3 poor games has been fantastic.
  • Worner & Wagner stepping up.

Cons
  • Pearce missing 6-8 weeks again is painful.
  • Walker & Simpson hurt early. Especially with Simpson, looked electric off HB.

Other
  • Banfield in the Freddy basket without the elite speed. Best is great, but his worst is game losing bad. Is not best 22 with a health list.
  • Chapman one that went over the radar, but I'll take him playing games and staying healthy.

I'd be very comfortable trading Luke Ryan. I think his reputation is much higher than his impact on games. He is clearly overweight and often exposed athletically, his kicking hasn't been a weapon for about 5 years, and we already have the players on the list to not miss him at all.

The overall strategy should be acquiring ready to go AFL players that aren't superstars but will get games. Players like Judd McVee and Callum Ah Chee.

We need Young and Darcy to get a clean preseason. Young struggled for a lot of that game I thought.

We need a defender who can help with ball movement and actually defend ground ball. Worner and Banfield are AFL defenders but both of them is one too many IMO.

We need another ground ball threat up front so Murphy can move up field with no issues and/or losing Switta doesn't hurt so much.

We need a couple of mature bodies as depth at Peel.

A genuinely good winger is the number one for me. I mean we scraped to the finals using a revolving door of midfielders out wide who are not wingers.
I hope we get McVee and he should replace Banfield in the backline. Banfield can then be the 23-25th player.

Train Carr or DeLean on the wing. Both have potential.

Johnson, Erasmus and NOD need to go inside midfield replacing JOM and Fyfe.
