Daz has praised Axe over the journey, so he's already on the record.

Given this thread is about Axe, and you're here, what say you??
It's not just about Atkins, but it got updated to that title a couple of years back

It may need a new update with an Irish twist

Geez I used to bag the shite out of Blicavs. How good had he been
Yet we somehow still have posters suggesting that he is not the dream recruit for every single club in the competition.

Our ability to deal with so many teams in so many ways continues to rely heavily on the incredible level of competence and tenacity our #46 brings to every single role he's given out there. And often he's performing a whole bunch of these roles within the space of just one game of footy.

So I'm revelling in every single masterclass we get to witness from him now. Because despite our differences of opinion regarding his overall worth as a player, I believe we can all agree on this one thing...

We will not see the likes of him again.

I think I've been a bit unappreciative of Jack Bowes. Mea Culpa. The guy can play.

First year Blicavs played, I thought he had the potential to be like Koutafides in terms of his tank and size, but that he had a long way to go. Years on, more valuable than Kouta in terms of his ability to play any role (except small forward) and was the reason for a rule change (third man up).

I had started to secretly want to trade SDK because I thought he wouldn’t get back near his best.

Last night was a lovely reminder of how happy I am to be wrong in life.

He was better but Brisbane's talls are either kids or finished.
The real test will be in a prelim when hes got to help keep either hogan/cadman or thilthorpe/fogarty quiet.

This is one of those stats "they" don't want us to know about, but SDK's defensive 1v1 loss % is only 18.6% this season. That's in the elite category for key defenders. Along with 5.5 intercepts and 4.8 spoils per game he's actually been more useful than most people give him credit for. He looked out of sorts when Henry and Stewart were missing, but has been pretty good since we've had the full defensive gang back.

I didn't think he could show that level of composure in a really hot game. There's no way 18 months ago he sees Dempsey and hits that pass rather than blazing away. Really classy performance on the big stage.

That 2m pass to Close that he adapted under pressure, who handballed to Smith for a running goal as well. I'd love to see a package of all of his 16 or so touches because I think he made the smart play basically every time.

When we first got him I said he may be able to replace Duncan on the wing and while he will never get to Mitch's level, playing the role as he did last night was kind of what I had in mind.

Im pretty much bang on about him. Was a very ordinary player in his first 4 seasons but to his credit has improved to the point he is now an average midfielder. Elite defensively but poor offensively.
You should go listen to Atkins on 3aw today.

He was asked a question about the teams of offensiveness and his role (something like that)
And he said 'I'm a bit of a pessimist so I set up to defend first. If we are being offensive the ball usually sails over my head'.

Can't decide which hill to die on??

This. Or Stewart>Enright.

He's also said in interviews this season that his primary focus this year has been to improve his attacking game and effect with ball in hand. Massive ticks in those areas for 2025. Is quite a smart ball user these days.

Kolo be like you forgetting about me :p

Rightio... following Stanley's demo job on Lobbe last night, I thought this would be an interesting thread topic.

- I thought we got absolutely stiffed in the Stanley-Christensen-Pick 21 swap, and that a 24-year-old StKilda reject had nothing to offer a club with finals aspirations

- I thought Mitch Brown would be a very good AFL-standard third tall defender or Tom Lynch-style forward

- I thought there was no way we would be able to match Collingwood for the next five years following the 2010 demolition job

- I thought David Spriggs and David Clarke were the best prospects in that promising early-2000s side

- I thought Moloney and Prismall would come back to really burn us, but that Ryan Gamble would prove to be a spud.

Who else? I'm awaiting for mea culpa regarding the supposedly useless Guthrie and Blicavs...
great post to start the thread.

love the last line.

Oh I can update it…

I thought Brad Close would never crack it.

I thought giving up a future first for pick 20 in the COVID draft was insane. Hello Max Holmes.

I thought Jack Henry was only ever going to carve out a Jed Bews level career, as the willing but limited bloke who is constantly on the periphery of the 22.

Holmes and Dempsey easily top two last night IMO. Blicavs third.

The measure of a very good team win is when nobody can agree on who was best on.

FWIW SEN’s panel gave Stew the three votes last night.

I agree with your assessments of his defensive and attacking capabilities, but I have reached a different conclusion - i.e. elite defensively but poor offensively = very very good.

I used to believe that if a midfielder didn't average at least 20 touches, he just didn't offer enough at AFL level. The modern defensive game, and the way that Geelong has consistently won midfield battles over the last three years despite not having a "great" offensive midfield, has shown me differently.

We won last night on the back of our defensive work around the Lions ball carriers. It was insanely good.

It doesn't help, IMO, that most of our valued stats are around attack - disposals, goals, metres gained, etc. But when someone has double the tackles of our next best, and leads the team in clearances, they are incredible at the tough stuff.

Judging on the scores these two 'experts' handed out, you've got to wonder if they actually watched the game or just assessed the stat sheet.

Atkins a 6, Mannagh 7, Guthrie a 5, Miers a 5.5, O'Connor 6.5. Utterly ridiculous.
