Cam Rayner

Main board ban would be better.

Cannot believe there are a couple of Lions folk here trying to defend this floppery.
Rayner is a disgrace.
Why won't you talk about the free against Rayner that Mark oconnor received using the same tactic of pleading and complaining to the Umpire.

You're all still sooking coz Rayner went and did one better on him later. Played exactly the same card that Mark used but did it way better young Rayner

Bloke is probably going to get booed in his own stadium next week. I suspect the decent number of Suns fans that make the trip up the M1 on Saturday night aren't going to show him much love after his recent diving antics.

Don't get your hopes up. This is a game where a bloke like Brayshaw's career was ended with head high contact, no suspension and they kept cheering Maynard game after game to drown out the boos. Or Cotchin's high hit on Shiel nothing, bontempelli fractured Nick Haynes larynx - nothing. VFL at work, always.

This Rayner event is nothing stuff in the scheme of things. There'll be something else new to rage next week and media will move on.

Fritsch vs Rayner in the octagon now. Pay per view.
Yeah we need you back man. These guys are just pushing through garbage at best for last 2 days. When their own club hero's have taken dive after dive to become shooting star memes.

Because Rayner went up to the umpire about a minute before the flop and told him to watch. They showed it on First Crack last night if you want to see it. It's why the 100+ metre off the ball free kick was given because that particular umpire was only looking at those two as per instructions from Rayner approximately a minute beforehand. It's most likely the reason he gave a second free kick as well. Pretty poor from both Rayner and the umpire that allowed him to manipulate the situation like that. Shouldn't have been allowed.
If he told him to watch its due to the fact that the same Umpire must've been the one who paid free against him earlier. Lets see how fair you'll be when I'm at the receiving end of it - and the Umpire was quite fair in my opinion in the end.

Cam Rayner is gun and a great bloke.

If umpires love the power so may much and want to make it about them by paying non existent free kicks it's on them and the AFL.

The AFL protect umpires and let them get away with ruining games. Umpires have 0 accountability for paying ticky touch free kicks. That's not Rayner's fault.

Yep.

Just another example of an action being over-analysed by a rabid and overblown football media, searching relentlessly for the next story to magnify in order to get clicks and eyeballs. Social media adds further to the hyperbole and over-reaction. It's not that big of a deal really.

Media will move. Geelong supporters will be sooking for years.

Most of us are already treating it as a meme, we won the game and we've moved on.

Any boos he receives from Cats fans in the future will be more pantomime villain stuff than anything nasty.

I'd love a Cam Rayner type in my team. Exciting player.

I hate seeing flopping and diving, and Rayner played the umpires like a fiddle. However, what was the point of the contact from O'Connor? Why flirt with the rules like that?

Regardless of how hard footballers used to me, and spectator blood-lust, one thing that shits me is the little gut punches, elbows, head massages on the ground etc. I'd rather see two footballers go at it with strength and skill, not cheap shots.

Absolutely crack down on staging, but continue to get rid of the unnecessary elbows and what not. Let someone come up and elbows you in the back or ribs, and tell me that won't make you lose your shit after the 20th time. We probably forget footballers are human sometimes.

Having said that, there's every chance that O'Connor had been on the receiving end before he retaliated.

A reversal would have been appropriate and the kick taken down in Geelong's forward line, but the Brisbane player on the mark.

Fix it sensibly AFL.

You were biding your time for...that? Browny wouldn't have even noticed someone brushing into him like that.
Nah, Just watching and having a laugh at all the crap being thrown around. Introducing Voss and Brown from the 2000's into a Cam Rayner thread when people are complaining about Selwood and Hawkins being introduced. lol

We can only be cats supporter selective. Don't dredge up the rest on a Cam Rayner thread.

Speaking of dives, I found this one pretty funny actually.

O'Connor did his tagging job well but clearly he does things behind play (I've read posts about pinching, jabs etc in X so looks like he has form) which can get on the nerve. He got a free too complaining to the umpire so by then Rayner had enough of him and decided to get one back on him - which he did to great effect.

Being tagged and harassed would be a new thing that Rayner has to start dealing with as opposition realize he's a big factor in turning momentum to Lions. He'll work through this phase as well.

The bit missing was Mark O'Connor put his hand up and cried to the Umpire when a free was awarded against Rayner in the earlier quarter. It was for a midriff tap, no one went down or got injured etc - he literally put his hand up towards Umpire

This is what is being referred to, fwiw.

Not sure what the argument being made is about things being "swept under the carpet", but there seems an unintentionally irony that the poster has noted "no one went down".

I believe that is the point others are making.

You can't blame Rayner for the umpire doing stupid things (and cats playing along stupidly).

If I was Cam Rayner, I'd be more embarrassed that I'd had such a bad game. If you take out those two kicks/goals, he had 8 kicks and 3 handballs.

Getting lippy about the two goals at half time and then after his goal early in the 3rd, really fell flat when they got trounced completely from then on.

He made the Geelong fans look up from their knitting and fired up an often-robotic Geelong team as well.

Thank you for finding it. This was the first free that got paid. He literally stood there hands wide pleading to Umpire and he paid it. Crickets from media and commentary at that point. If you play this card, then be prepared for the same card to be played the other way around too by Rayner.

It's a bit of a long stretch.

I'd be more inclined to agree if O'Connor doubled over in fake pain, rather than do the "what about that one" shrug that you see tonnes of times a game - hence crickets. Plus, Rayner probably needs to work on his niggle-craft. Don't square up like a boxer when you're doing it.

Meh. I think the issue in the end is whether the rules have got the balance right as they stand. We don't really have the NBA / NFL equivalent of a "flagrant foul". I don't think anyone would be upset if the first offence led to a turnover of possession; the second one is in the eye of the beholder.

So was it a Rayner dive, a free kick or just an incorrect call?
