2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

it's not the reason, but a reason

I know the Weddle's (Josh), we walked our kids to school together, I see his parents every week, they live literally 8 doors up, his mum bakes and takes them to the club every week, The family feel so involved in not only Josh's life but also those around him. It makes a difference

Us supporters see the cash and expect an outcome from that, but we don't see the hard work that families put into their partners/children's success.

Like any workplace, a happy one is far more likely to produce results.

Except the club did the things Battle wanted and he still bailed. Im sure the above is true, but the fact his mrs wanted to ladida around the big names can also be true.

Everyone, stop panicking over Wilkie. He is under contract for 2 years. Unless Dogs offer us the world in a trade and WE are satisfied could anything happen. Even if he went rogue and requested a trade, we can hold him to his contract. Calm down!

Let's not forget when Papley requested a trade to Carlton: https://www.afl.com.au/news/148858/...er-play-for-joe-papley-failed-trade-explained

The above also goes for Marshall.

Not if Ed Richards came back the other way,

But neither are likely to happen.
Don't think that would be happening in fairness. If wilkie gets done, which i doubt i would think it will be for draft picks.

Both sides are at fault.

Club wanted another pick ala Gresham.

Battle was done and then he wasn’t and then he left.

Club was firm on its offer, as it was confident and knew it would result in band 1.

Ross managed his people. Battle told him that he was staying and it bit him in the ass - hence the entire BnF situation.

Ultimately. He plays at Hawthorn and we have Tauru and some new defenders next month.

You know when you are getting pumped, the ball isn’t exactly getting to the end of the ground Ryan would be playing in.
Didn't stop Jake Waterman getting 34 coaches votes in 2024.

And also, that's why I included the West Coast BnF results. BnF voting will factor in how players are performing while factoring in surrounding circumstances. Ryan hasn't finished top 7 in 2022, 2024 or 2025 despite playing 16, 17 and 20 games.

He may do better for us. Or may not.

I just don't get the excitement. People just seem fascinated by things that are new and shiny.

Let's hope he performs and contributes for 4 years- he'll be 32 in the last year of his deal.

I don't like all this agreeing with you 🙂

Your point on workplace is incredibly important.
I think we are rightly around with the clubs response to the needs of our first nations players. A diverse group of indigenous young men from different country and different cultures.
I get the feeling the club was embarrassed they had covered the indigenous needs so well but inadvertently neglected the needs of other players. Swallowed their pride and reacted to losing Battle by improving family game day experience.
Battle is no cuck, his issue wasn't handled well. It got out we were shopping him and that started the decline in relationship.
Again since then, I can't remember a leak from the List Management since. ( that's why I take any mooted salaries of players, high or low, with a grain of salt).

Last point. It is a bit juvenile to think the club is always right, the Battle case for a start proves that point wrong. It is also juvenile to see something negative about the club and to automatically jump to worst case conclusions and disparage the club.
A bit of balance is required.
I actually hugely respect that the club acknowledged the Battle situation. It was right and shows alot of maturity (big part of why im backing their choices and outcomes right now).

Agree on the last point, i think i tend to lean toward the negative because there is an over representation of the positive (even the Battle thing is still alot of posters talking shit about Battle and his family).

Even the current list management stuff im noting some minor concerns about having TOO many coming, thats still a good problem to have.

You always need draft picks.
We are recruiting mature bodies having hit the draft heavily the last few years.

“Needing” draft picks doesn’t go with the path we are going this offseason.

A gun player is what it would take to lose Wilkie.

We wanted 3 good frsts for Nas as a minimum.

Wilkie would need to be 2 for us to even contemplate it (and i notoriously undervalue players) which you dont and wont have.

Also look at what were doing, its players or dont bother.

Id definitely pay 2 1st for Wilkie

its an arms race, it always has been

with salary caps and soft caps, the new battleground is the intangibles, if we want to compete, we have to be as good as those around us, if not better.

She/they may well have been sold magic beans, but every loss is a chance to learn and get better, sounds like we have,
move on and dont let it happen again

So wont get done. Not having a go, but Wilkie is as important to our club as Bont is to yours ( not saying he is as good, just the fabric of the club).
Imagine we offered Bont 5 x 2.5 million while he was contracted and we said to you, we wont give up players, only some picks in a weak and compromised draft. You reply would be what?

In 2022, 2024 and 2025 Ryan finished 10th, 9th and 7th amongst Eagles players in coaches votes. (Ignoring 2023- he was injured). (Keeping in mind forwards generally poll better than defenders).

In those years he finished 10th, no placing and 8th in the Eagles best and fairest.

So Ryan hasn't been one of the best players, in the worst team of the past 30 years.
I agree with you on Ryan. Not at all a fan of recruiting him. Certainly not if he costs more than a third rounder. Even then....nup.

I rest my case.

Not likely.

GWS only got 13 and 15 (and other pick swaps that basically cancelled each other out) for Jeremy Cameron who was 2 years younger than Wilkie.

Historical precedent says 2 first rounders would be over the odds for someone who will be 30 early next year.

Unless it's 2 picks at the lower end of the first round in a weak draft perhaps. Like pick 17 and 20 or something.

Same morons said that Battle was the easiest player on the list to replace and that we wouldn't even notice. Most of them in a rage when they dared to make him AA. Your cognitive dissonance defies all evidence that we are competent at list management.
This is the reality of allowing players to choose where they want to play.
St Kilda did not choose to move Battle on, he chose to play for the club he supported as a kid.
Success breeds success, if you can attract more kids to support your club through through winning premierships (and just winning), then you will probably have more draftees wanting to come to your club.
St Kilda had a surge of membership and support just by contending after 2001, imagine what effect a premiership might have.
