Flynn Young, Will White, and Binns. The Campo brothers as well. I'm sure that Flynn and Will will be retained as rookies. Binns with the new strength and conditioning coach working on building some muscle on him will give us a bit more on the wing as well.
Yeah, I forgot about the Campos, but we haven't seen much of them yet. As far as the other three go, I'm not convinced that they will be at Carlton long term even if retained now.

Merrett would cost at least a first rounder, around a million a year in salary, is about to turn 30 and might want out of * because he is sick of losing and their list is going backwards...

He is a gun, but if leaves we aren't the answer for him...
Sure he asked us out on a date previously..?

Hi Zee, yes, we’re still a lil’ horny for you 😊

The AFL could have easily partnered with the Sharks to get everything that they wanted for them to get into the league just like they were willing to with Port Adelaide Magpies before the other SANFL clubs got involved.

Maybe, but the kind of money they needed to drop into the South East QLD market - I doubt they’d want to cede control of it to the Board of a local suburban football club.

I caught up with someone I’ve known for years through the Southport Sharks and later the Suns. He’s been heavily involved at both clubs, long before the Suns even entered the AFL, and has had a big influence on their clubs (has been a director, etc.). His take on where the Suns are at right now was interesting.

He thinks Jed Walter is gettable for the right player. I’ve often thought of Walter as the face of their academy system, but he doesn’t see it that way. The Suns don’t rely on one poster boy anymore. In his view, Ethan Read is the standout. He ticks all of Damien Hardwick’s non-negotiables and is the one they rate the highest.

The Suns are confident they’ll hang on to their core, including Ben King, for the long term. That belief, combined with Read’s development, means they could consider moving Walter. The feeling is they can’t play Walter, Read and King together in the same side. He thinks a more mobile forward would suit their balance better. Walter might be the piece that gets them that.

Walter himself is seen as a boom-or-bust type. His ceiling is very high but the floor is just as low. He’ll need the right coaching to get there and there are concerns he’s a bit more conditional than they’d like, especially compared with Read who they see as the much safer bet.

He feels that Flanders disappears out of games far too often. Can rack up possessions in a hurry but in-game consistency is a significant issue. A Walter, Flanders and picks (not 2025 as they need them) would make sense for the Suns but probably doesn't get them Curnow unless it's the most we're offered. Thinks Carlton stand firm unless we get presented overs although he suggests it might be in our best interests to take the best offer available especially if it has someone like Jed or another high-level prospect in it.

He isn’t convinced on Charlie because of the injury history and his age, although he understands why the fit makes sense

Looking at Carlton from the outside, he reckons Graham Wright is held in very high regard and feels that we'll become a juggernaut with him in three to five years. He wasn’t surprised Michael Voss was retained either. His take was that the coaching market this year was thin and the chance to make a change was 12 months ago, but we couldn’t sack Voss after last season. He thinks we need a change in list management and recruiting. He is stunned we're locking up borderline best 22 talent for multiple seasons and thinks no other club would be signing those contracts.

e: I don't think there's anything here "rumour" worthy for the no discussion thread. Another perspective valid for a post though
John Wick(zki) delivers the goods…👍

Judd went for 3, 20 and Kennedy.

Judd had more value than Curnow does, but it's very similar...
What did Brisvegas give us for Fev... a dual Coleman winner.

They gave us a 20 year old Lachie Henderson and pick 12.

We gave them a 29 year old Fev and our second round pick (pick 27). We also paid 100k of his salary for the next 2 years.

As for the Judd deal, we offered them a straight swap of Fev for Judd. They said they wanted a young talent and so we offered a choice of Bower and Kennedy. They leapt on Kennedy.

Just on that Wickzki post, I'm stunned at all this praise for Ethan Read. Every Gold Coast game I've watched this year he looks like the most unco unnatural footballer on the planet. Truly tall players get so much more leeway in terms of their development.
I don’t see it with Ethan read either.

Apologies if I have missed this somewhere in the hundreds of pages of comments.

But Walter and pick 6. How is that even anywhere near close enough for CC?

Trading a proven star, dual Coleman medallist for potential. Pick 6 might be good. Walter might become good. A lot of ifs and unknowns.
Don’t know if id be ok or comfortable with that trade.

I agree GC have more to offer than Sydney. But id want heaps more for CC
Yes I agree and the club are going to want an offer they can’t refuse.
But that is the start of a deal, if we swapped out a free agent pick and they include another high value player such as Flanders( I don’t know if he’s any good but some seem to rate him) then we start to get closer to the mark.

Yeah that def starts to sound better. But is Flanders another Cerra. Has the potential and flashes of brilliance but not consistent enough in those brilliant performances?

Stick with the current model for 10 more years in regards to the F/S stuff. Do what you want with the Northern Academies.

For the next 10 years, Carlton has ~26 F/S players coming through the system. Will some of them be first round picks? Maybe... Arli definitely. There is bound to be a couple more coming through who'll end up rated first round. In 2030, we could potentially have 2 first round pick F/S prospects in Lewis Betts and Nason Lovett-Murray (Can see * making a bid there).

And we have our next generation Chief Wiggins and champion clubman in Alex Wiggins.

We don't have Judd saying him or me this time round.

Walter is every bit as athletic as Charlie, also gives way more care to the defensive side of the game.

I hope it’s true, yes it will affect our ability over the next year or two to contend but we aren’t contenders anyway, will help with a reset enormously.

I doubt GC would give pick 6 straight out as they need valuable picks, but that doesn’t mean we can’t skin it another way
We know curnow is a great runner, how does Walter go in the 2 kms etc?

It’s hard to believe the AFL is already considering more changes to the draft, before we’ve even seen how last year’s adjustments to the Draft Value Index play out.

The previous changes made sense - I fully support clubs being required to pay fair market value for Father/Son and Academy picks. If the current system isn’t quite right, then fine - adjust the index. Keep tweaking it until it’s fair.

But don’t strip clubs of choice altogether, and in the process, undo over a century of tradition and remove the incentive for non-footy states to invest in developing talent.

Is there another professsional sport on earth that has an administration as hated as the AFL?

"Suburban football club" is really underselling the significance of the Sharks on the Gold Coast.

Even today their membership numbers are going toe-for-toe growth wise with what the AFL has gotten out of the Suns.

The Sharks have over 55000 members (as many paid members as the Brisbane Lions). The Suns broke 30k for the first time this year.

We had no leverage in the Fev deal - everyone knew we wanted to offload him.

The “vibe” I get from Andrew Demetriou at that time is that he wouldn’t have pumped money into an organisation he didn’t have direct control of. 😉

Again, they could have worked things into the contracts that would have given them all the control that they wanted from the Sharks AFL bid. They didn't even try.
