Saw some of this in an newsfeed this morning.

Apparently WC are asking to keep pick 2 overall compensation for Oscar Allen if they also bring in a free agent.

The plan seems to be we would swap the TDK and JSOS compo picks for Pick 2, Chesser (and probably a later first).

I find it very funny that everything will be ok with a few new players, especially if they are quick.

How many years has it now been where we can’t even kick the ball back in to play to anywhere other than to 2 spots (short into the pocket or long to the same side every time).

That’s not the players, new blood is always something to be hopeful about, but I’d much rather some decent coaching and system.

I feel this is where the difference in a lot of supporters sit. I hear Khamis, Carroll and Newman but then i think Humphries from Geelong, Ash/Whitfield from GWS, Wilmot from Brissy etc. The Pies and Hawks rebound kickers are elite by foot.

A significant portion of AFL strategy is built around distribution from the back half.

In blind hope you say Khamis, Carroll and Newman but in the real world those names arent in the right stratosphere to progress us into a finals team. Saad is the only one and he is exiting soon.

I absolutely agree they are AFL level players but just bottom 6 AFL players. We have to be more ruthless as supporters and a club if you value winning. If you value the spirit or essence of things, then we can load up on more Khamis if that is the direction you like.

For sure, an absolute A-grade rebounding defender would be the dream, but cost is the deciding factor there. The position has become so in-vogue that we've just seen an unaccountable (though undeniably talented) HBF sign a $2-mil per year contract to stay at his current club.

Depending on how the draft plays out, we could well look at Lindsay who would be someone we could slot into HB and allow to develop in the seniors with his already prolific kicking skills.

Beyond that though, if you want to improve our rebound then it's going to be incremental improvement by raising the floor (ie. have 5+ players down back who can be trusted to hit a target more often than not, rather than 1-2 elite kicks surrounded by peanuts), and by addressing the abysmal movement we show up the field so that the guys coming out of D50 aren't being forced to kick to disadvantageous contests.

I think this off season will be about raising the floor and addressing the gameplan/strategy aspects. Hopefully Lindsay if we can swing it. Does it dramatically improve us in 2026, probably not - but a little improvement goes a long way in this game, and if it sets us up for the next 10 years without us having to cough up multiple first rounders and a truckload of cash then it's a good strategy that also allows us to address some other issues.

I just want to know what the end game is for us re this if it happens.

Pick 2, Pick 18 and Chesser
For Pick 11 and Pick 21

Sounds good to me!

Caro reckons Charlie is more likely going to Geelong.

Everyone wants to go to Geelong ... wouldn't surprise me... greedy bunch, that lot.
If they end up winning the Flag ... it will be queue up Charlie.. everyone loves a winner, unless your name is Collingwood

She can think that. It won’t happen though. He has four years left to run on his contract and Geelong can’t offer us a suitable trade.

Stick with the current model for 10 more years in regards to the F/S stuff. Do what you want with the Northern Academies.

For the next 10 years, Carlton has ~26 F/S players coming through the system. Will some of them be first round picks? Maybe... Arli definitely. There is bound to be a couple more coming through who'll end up rated first round. In 2030, we could potentially have 2 first round pick F/S prospects in Lewis Betts and Nason Lovett-Murray (Can see * making a bid there).

And we have our next generation Chief Wiggins and champion clubman in Alex Wiggins.
Definitely want Arli 🤞

I kind of think now that the season has finished and we are focusing on players, we've forgotten what I believe is the bigger issue. If our game plan, system of inside 50 etc doesn't change it won't matter who we trade in.

Walter might be a great get, but he ain't getting the ball when the second defender up rolls over the top of the contest getting the easy possession while he is "boxed out" by his immediate defender.

To be honest, some of the remarks from Voss and Wright post season regarding game plans doesn't fill me with confidence. It might be a case of playing the straight bat to the media but it is a lingering worry.

That's why they never bottom out. Everyone wants to go there. Free agency mainly hurts sides like us. Even though Charlie isn't a free agent.
How the hell could geelong get Charlie?

Free agency is the one thing the AFL needs to look at.
Not father sons.
Top sides are always getting free agents for nothing. No draught picks just a list space needed. It's infuriating. 🤨

Just can't see how they would be able to get a deal done

Last week it was Sydney, this week it’s Geelong. Cats have nothing to get the deal done. I don’t see any trade happening for Charlie.

None of the clubs will offer what we want, the players we want will not want to come either. Close to impossible to trade for Charlie.

Yep, so easy to fix as well using the same formula they use to decide on a compo pick they can taketh away from the club securing the player.

Max Holmes as a starting point
He would be. And then it would just go higher. Gryan Miers would have to be included as well. In fact, by the time we finish asking for players, Geelong would take themselves out of the running.

The media are ridiculous - they keep coming up with Charlie trade scenarios that are clearly unworkable so they simpy come up with another club with good surf.

Look out for the Freo rumour next (despite them not needing another tall forward)

The level of pessimism is strange really. Personally, I think it's short sighted and media driven.
Despite missing the finals, this year we led at half time in something like 13 games.
So we didn't finish off well.
Look at the factors involved here.
One player going at half rat power so that he didn't injure himself for his next contract.
That alone would have had a deflating effect on the group, let alone the fact that he's probably the most useless forward in the comp.
Then you have a sook wanting $800k+ a year for averaging less than 13 games per year over a 10 year period! Gimme a f..... break!
Our most dynamic mid missed almost half a year, then came back and reminded us of just how good he can be.
We lost our best small defender in the preseason and although he's not young anymore his loss was massive.
Losing Kemp also robbed us of a viable 3rd target up forward.

There were a lot of positives though.
We finally played young players and they showed that they are able to do well at AFL level, particularly Lord.
I doubt there was another club with 3 rising star nominations.
Lord, Carroll and Moir will all improve again next year if given consistent opportunities.
HOK gives us an aggressive target in the forward line that we have been lacking.
Moir could be a POD with his ability to mark and kick on either side.
HOF will benefit from 12 months in the gym and learning from experienced team mates like Newman mentoring Dean this year.

IMHO, the put up or f off attitude taken by GW is the best thing to happen to the club in years.
It's exactly what was needed at exactly the right time.
I'm looking forward to next year and I think that the talk of a need for a full rebuild is a knee jerk reaction to media bullshit.

Edit: Although Cerra has had his issues, he's a far better player than Jye Amiss.
