I kind of think now that the season has finished and we are focusing on players, we've forgotten what I believe is the bigger issue. If our game plan, system of inside 50 etc doesn't change it won't matter who we trade in.

Walter might be a great get, but he ain't getting the ball when the second defender up rolls over the top of the contest getting the easy possession while he is "boxed out" by his immediate defender.

To be honest, some of the remarks from Voss and Wright post season regarding game plans doesn't fill me with confidence. It might be a case of playing the straight bat to the media but it is a lingering worry.

Don't think anyone has forgotten, we're just coming into the window of list changes so that's naturally the focus. Once the draft is done we'll go through the "Best 22" debate, and then once preseason kicks off in earnest we'll have track watchers reporting back on what looks different at training.

Hope not... all depends on the contract and the special sauce the AFL applies to its "formula"
This feels like GCS and blues issues form a few years back

AFL desperate to help the suns, but not us so waited the year

AFL probably keen to help eagles (not so sure about bombers) but don’t want us to benefit so yeah, probably some joggers pokery to happen

I dont think most people on here have realised what teh club is amassing in terms of negotiating and buying power in quick time - whilst at eh same time cleaning out the place of the entitled underperformers. As has been said I forgot to add Williams next year and McGovern ( possibly ) thsi year to the total.

Carlton far from being broke and broken has accrued more spending power and more picks than was thought possible - a month ago.

I reckon Wright would be absolutely LOVING curnows management atm and media hyperbole - meanwhile he is busy ridding the place of losers. Maybe he has ha d a few chats with Russell about teh players as well - do you think that they might knwo each other wll enough to have had a coffee date?

On the flip side of this, if we were to move on Charlie and convince Humphrey to come for example, i doubt he is leaving unless its for a significant pay rise, same if its Walter, same if its Campbell from Sydney or whatever player we target.

If we then just go the draft route, then its filled with risk, this is my worry, im not fussed if we lose quality, we just need to make sure we have something coming back that’s reliable.

For sure, an absolute A-grade rebounding defender would be the dream, but cost is the deciding factor there. The position has become so in-vogue that we've just seen an unaccountable (though undeniably talented) HBF sign a $2-mil per year contract to stay at his current club.

Depending on how the draft plays out, we could well look at Lindsay who would be someone we could slot into HB and allow to develop in the seniors with his already prolific kicking skills.

Beyond that though, if you want to improve our rebound then it's going to be incremental improvement by raising the floor (ie. have 5+ players down back who can be trusted to hit a target more often than not, rather than 1-2 elite kicks surrounded by peanuts), and by addressing the abysmal movement we show up the field so that the guys coming out of D50 aren't being forced to kick to disadvantageous contests.

I think this off season will be about raising the floor and addressing the gameplan/strategy aspects. Hopefully Lindsay if we can swing it. Does it dramatically improve us in 2026, probably not - but a little improvement goes a long way in this game, and if it sets us up for the next 10 years without us having to cough up multiple first rounders and a truckload of cash then it's a good strategy that also allows us to address some other issues.
Absolutely agree with this.

Need midfielders who can actually spread and create separation up the field, which in turn doesnt make 'that' kick out of D50 so daunting and the players will actually go for it a bit more.

Atm we are dead set witches hats up the field.

I think there would be a few other picks involved, but using an uncontracted Jeremy Cameron, he was effectively 2 + 26 + F4th Rd.

Chesser wouldn't be free in a trade, and I'd expect similar price to Matt Kennedy.

Geelong trade the equivalent of pick 6 for Cameron, they hardly paid much at all. People conveniently gloss over the fact that Geelong got 2 second round picks back

Yes - That is much less sensationalist than the 'three first rounders' element that people focus on

No - He was an RFA, and would have cost a lot more under contract

I’m surprised. St kilda are going to need an actual proper ruckman when Marshall leaves.

TDK will be fantastic as a #1 ruck. Although not great value at that salary AND the cost of losing Marshall.

Although...... what if that was half intentional? St Kilda pay (A LOT) more salary to upgrade Marshall for TDK, get a ruckman who is four years younger AND get paid a first rounder (?) for their troubles.

Basically using cap space to buy a pick and improve their list profile. Not the most insane idea.

I love all this trade banter re Charlie but do we honestly really think Voss would let him go coaching for his future and especially to geelong.

spot on.

Voss was overruled on Houston and accepted the team call. Highly unlikely he'll be overruled on Curnow in his last year of a coaching contract if he wasn't getting a 'game-changer' back the other way.

I'm told reliably the Voss-Curnow relationship isn't great and Vossy apparently very disappointed in Charlie's attitude this year. I reckon Voss is thinking "if I'm going down next year you're going down with me Charlie".

The only thing that has me second guessing a little is how strong Voss & Wright were on "Carlton first, what's best for Carlton" line they deliberately emphasised in recent interviews / statements. That tells me the door is fractionally ajar...

Be interesting what they get for Marshall.

I think you are correct in what they are trying to achieve so maybe whoever is buying Marshall can offer less that’s what they he is worth

I argued similar back in the Gibbs days and have since.

Step 1) Trade out a contracted guy for some sharp picks
Step 2) Recruit similar player as FA

Result: It costs some extra salary (more expensive to recruit vs keep talent), but you replace the player like-for-like and get paid pick(s) in the process. IF the player leaving wants out (eg Gibbs scenario), it doesn't cause ill-will amongst the list for pushing out talent.
