McStay played a lot better than Checkers in our last prelim.
And he’s been dropped because of terrible form.

I still can’t understand how people say checkers had a poor game. He had 5 shots on goal and kept Keane in the goal square which freed up everyone else. He did exactly what his brief would have been.

You mean a year ago? What's the relevance of that? A year ago, my golf handicap was half of what it is now.

Before being dropped a week ago, McStay was in nightmarishly-poor form. Diabolically bad. Like, make an urgent appointment to see a sports psychologist level of bad.

Aside from the occasional one-off game, Checkers has consistently been the better forward of the two for the entire time that McStay has been at the Club. At a guess I would say that Checkers would have double the number of scoring shots each week that McStay has.

I'm praying for you, Checkers!

McStay would be a barely-adequate replacement for Checkers.

Even in a poor game against the Crows, Checkers still had five scoring shots. I doubt McStay has managed that many in any game he has played since moving across to us.

The idea of our tall forward posts being filled by McStay, Cox and Membrey gives me shivers. We're not going to get another seven goal haul from Jamie and Sidey in the Prelim. Checkers is a proven 2-4 goal performer. We need him playing.
Mcstay would allow us to maintain our forward structure without having to make too many changes.

whilst checkers is a valuable player, he is not that important where our forward line structure changes dramatically in his absence.

If checkers is not fit to perform, a serviceable mcstay plus minor structural adjustments will be more than enough to make up for his absence.

I’d back in McStay to be much better after being dropped and having time to freshen up

He still stood up in the dying moments of the Melbourne game and took a strong contested grab and kicked the winning goal

Hopefully that’s something he can build off going forward.

I’ll admit some romanticism in wanting his selection due to his 2023 situation. Would be absolutely gutted for him to miss out on a potential Flag after getting us there in 23

So was Cox before he was included. I have faith McStay can turn it around. Especially with Cox in allowing him to play as a full time forward.
Hmmm, Cox had at least strung together a few consecutive good performances in the VFL. McStay looked completely lost in his last few appearances.

But you're right, if Checkers is ruled out then yes, we'll have no choice but to bring in McStay. But let's not pretend that he's anywhere near as good as Checkers when both are in full flight.

A tall forward trio of McStay, Cox and Membrey would be near league-worst. We'll be having to rely hugely on our small fowards and mids to kick us a winning score. I guess that underlines how important it is for us to get Bobby back into the line-up.

Last time out v GC we went in with Cox, McStay and Membrey. I don’t think it was the difference that night unlike no Lipinski, Hill and Pendles and Howe playing limited minutes. Brisbane is a different story again because I think Andrews and Gardiner have Mihocek’s measure.

This for me, is spot on. The shifting to the ruck and even worse, down back, has destroyed McStay this season. He needs to be settled in the forward line.

Yep

Reckon Cox will make McStay better by allowing him to play purely as a key forward as well as getting potentially the second defender

Collins/Harris-Andrews probably wouldn’t have a choice but to play on Cox

What explains McStay’s continued lesser form against GC & Freo, when Cox played?

Dunno. Maybe a lack of stability in role?

What explains Checkers poor form?
Or Lipinski’s post his concussion? (Prior to Thursday night)
Or Crisps?

Or any player for that matter who has been in poor form this year?

No idea. That’s why I was querying a reason put forth that doesn’t line up with what happened

well yeah, if I had to guess, it comes down to his confidence is shot, probably due to being played out of position a bit, and having 3 knee injuries in 3 seasons - so even though he had some games with Cox in (IIRC he still did some ruck contests even with Cox in and wasn't allowed to play 100% as a key forward), he is just playing down on confidence and it shows.

EDIT: yes, McStay is credited with 2 HO in each of the games against Gold Coast and Fremantle, where he and Cox were both played.

We don't play off in a grand final in 2023 without him in that prelim

He had a bad kicking for goal game but certainly did not have a bad game otherwise.

You nailed it.

Brody, Jamie and Tex all had 5 scoring shots last week. You would normally expect Brody to kick at least a couple of them but unfortunately he didn’t. If he had finished with 2.3 or 3.2 plus crashed some of the packs like he did, I dont think we would be having this conversation.
He got looks at the scoreboard. I’m confident he will make the most of them next time.
