2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

From what I've seen, that's because his kicks are 20m sideways kicks - and thats only if he chooses to kick instead of handballing which would be less than 50% of the time when playing in the midfield

Had 2 score involvements from 27 disposals with 62% CBAs against North Melbourne last year

Had 6 in his 43 disposal game against GWS with 83% CBAs

His 11 from 30 against Port with 86% CBAs is the only game worth frothing over IMO

Attached is his kicking efficiency, metres gained, and score involvements for each of the 6 games he played 60%+ CBAs last year. For reference, Ryan Byrnes and Zak Jones averaged 64.5% and 67% KE, respectively, this year

I can see the appeal with him being a clearance winner, but I think people are overrating his impact by foot. Just my opinion before I start copping it

If I were Hawthorn, I would consider overpaying for Merret to get Essendon to hang on to his salary.

If they give up 3 first round picks with essendon paying 80% of his salary, they can go to Butters next year with a blank cheque and the opportunity to play alongside Merrett, Day, Newcombe and Ward.

If Butters is a no go, they can front end their young players and have a crack at free agency any year after.

Essendon will have nobody to pay next year.

Good question, but I reckon the lure of them capitalising right now might have us in with a chance.

Can only hope. But if we offered 7 and got a F2nd back, then flipped that for Ryan. Would be an unreal bit of business.

Hawks could then flip 7 and 8 for Merrett.

Who says no?
Essendon don't really need more picks. If anything McKenzie makes sense for them.

McKenzie would have to want to go though. Like us with Wilks, he can't just be shunted off anywhere without his approval.
And it might be easier to sell 5 picks in the top 10 than getting in lesser players than the one being lost.

CMac might not want to go to the Bummers but .... he may want to come to us ..... if being pushed

I've never been a Brad Scott fan.

But well played Brad on 360

He's contracted FFS not kidnapped.

With Flanders and CMac both possibilities, it makes you wonder why we were so quick to give Dow another contract
Internal competition.. we want a midfield group that is high in quality and depth, which creates fierce competition and pushes one another to be better, this is where cream rises to the top. There's no guarantee that kids like Boxshall, Garcia and Pou will improve year on year. In the past we barely had a midfield together let alone a quality one with depth. Dow is on a cheap 1 year contract, due to injuries, he hasn't had a good run at it yet. Compared to him or Jones, I'd rather keep Dow and see what he can do. Our VFL side will be competitive for once.

We’ll see how this plays out.

It’s worth remembering that if we keep them their value next year is half what it is now.

You can’t get quality in with magic beans and we have pick 7 then junk.

Talk of trading Caminiti is just whack, who trades a young key for chump change.
Direct from the horses mouth today, nothing in the Hammer to Collingwood stuff

Makes sense - partly because Collingwood (like so many clubs) is out for blood because of our recruiting moves so of course they'd leak something like that, partly because bozo journos leaning into the lazy narrative that our moves will cost us players so they make up possibilities.

Next week it'll be Byrnes in the Essendon Bar with a candlestick full of money.

The moment you try to involve a player in a trade he’s out the door.

In the case of Cmac if that happens and we want him we’ll get him. Are you open to a trade is code for we don’t rate you and would like you to leave.

It feels like showing interest in Caminiti isn't the most devastating form of revenge, just kind of validates our talented identification?

Eh, I’m a little less romantic about the Merrett potential move business. The times are very much changing (by the AFL’s own hand) and “the game” is quickly becoming “the business”. Winning is fun and being paid well is fun too.

It’s cool if he stays (same with P.Cripps for example) but would not criticise in any way if he chased the dream even if it is at fwarking Hawthorn

Probably stays at the pies, they don’t loose many and he’s had a great year.

He’s like a small full forward, Hill and Schultz can’t do what he does.
If Bobby misses out on selection in the prelim and/or granny, would it be worth a phone call? He wanted to leave GWS to play on the MCG for a big club so it doesn't seem likely he'd be interested.

But if he is feeling a diminished role and having some personal issues, maybe Brad could sell the club as a place worth considering?
