That was a hell of a lot of typing to suggest that Gold Coast will give up 2561 points this year in a trade for Curnow.

Why?

Arent they supposed to be keen? Elite key forwards and players in general, especially contracted ones generally take a fair bit of getting. Carlton hold all the pieces, if he goes it's a big trade we do very well out of and I can't help but feel that we will be pretty serious about making a trade. But only if we win pretty big out of it.

And it's not just Geelong going out and getting star midfielders when they want them.

Tom Mitchell, Brownlow medalist still in his peak. Collingwood just go and get him.

Brisbane just go and get Lachie Neale who was one of the best mids in the game at the time, went there and won two Brownlows and a flag.

Not a midfielder but you can add Richmond getting Lynch after winning a premiership to the list as well.

Our list is not nearly as good as the mentioned sides so we should be able to do it. Salary cap should not be an issue at all.

We have the potential to be a pretty good side, but we need some high class additions which fit into a modern game style.

IMO we are at the same point as the above mentioned sides. A get like this could make us. A miss could leave us trapped in mediocraty.

If someone like the Suns really want Curnow and we can turn that into Walter and Butters then we are mad if we don't do it. You of course push for a few pick upgrades in that trade as well.

I think this trade period will be the making or the breaking of Carlton. I think we need to be really aggressive now. We have players who are tradable about to lose significant value. We have a few changes to get the team up to scratch.

Our midfield is pretty ordinary and there isn't anything coming through which will change it into a modern midfield. If our coaching group rate it then we haven't sacked enough of them. Our midfield has the potential to become a really good modern midfield but we need to get busy and fix the balance issue in there. You aren't winning a flag with an average midfield.

I don't get it, teams on the cusp like us go out there and bring an elite player into their side and that's ok, that's them they must be doing something illegal and here we are making all the excuses in the world why we can't.

Make no mistake, Collingwood or Geelong will retire a player or two next year and just go out and get Butters and he will be a part of their next flag and if we haven't got things right will just do nothing floating in and out of the 8.

I am hoping that Wright, Voss and Austin have a pretty good plan here because now is the time for us to get the team really cracking, get aggressive and make some big list changes.

Regarding Motlop. I come from the school of "hard arse" but what has he done in the last 2 years to justify the circa 500k he was on? Motlop should see the offer in front of him is reasonable and should be motivated to prove himself. Our contract offers are testing the character of our players for the first time in 30 years and will leave us a list of players who prioritise performance and premierships

2023 was our chance at a premiership, in form at the right time of year and on a roll. Maybe if we could have added a couple of players in 24, such as Haynes and Evans, we might have had a better chance that year. '23 is the one that got away for mine.

And there was plenty of players moving in the 2022 trade period that would have helped us possibly go further.

I don understand the idea of improving our depth, by trading out a lot of players.

We have lost TDK, SOS, Doc, Fanta and possibly Hollands and more.

It’s fine to move past these types but if the players who come in, have a lower output collectively, we go backwards.

DeKoning: seems like we are gaining Liam Reidy as a replacement, would have preferred a Moyle level type, time will tell us how this works out…

Silvagni: will be a loss on what he displayed when available as a KPD, will need to be replaced, a Butts type would be ideal considering HOF’s LT injury, Dean a first year player and Young who is too unreliable as a defender…

Docherty: time had caught up with him unfortunately since 2023, we have the perfect replacement in Cheeser who is 22yrs old who can play multiple positions, talented an extremely good kick and pace to burn… Moneyball pickup…

Fantasia: his best years were well and truly behind him before he crossed over to us, if Evans form holds true in how he finished the year off, then we have a younger and healthier player who can take the role on immediately, although we need to add proper small fowards…

Hollands: his entire skill set is exactly what we need as a forward/midfielder, he has been given multiple chances by i suppose both clubs for multiple reasons, he’ll be hard to replace quality wise, hopefully we have a some possibilities lined up who can play this role…

But, if they are, they won't be giving up (many) 2025 points, because they actually need more points this year, and, because those points are devalued relatively.

If we trade Charlie, it will need to look like a win for us, so it will be a massive deal.
But if you're trying to come up with a crazy deal, at least put some thought into it to make it somewhat realistic.

I said earlier that Butters, if there is a chance there, we aught to go for him in a big way.

You'd still have Cripps and Hewett in the side. Cerra I would train a bit differently, slim him down and put him on a wing, a position where he was trending to be elite early in his career.

Cripps/Lord/Hewett with two of Butters, Walsh and rotating players Williams, Smith, Chesser and possibly Moir going through there is ideal.

There are times where we will go with two of Cripps, Lord and/or Hewett. Which is fine, we can go more defensive in those instances but we can't have the three in there. The better sides will belt us.

Lord and Ben Camporeale will hopefully come on and take over from Cripps and Hewett and be pretty good players. Both are your more inside players, not super quick, just inside grunt but for those types, they move ok. Walker will be another faster paced player to add into there in years to come.

Walker and Smith wont be primary onballers for a while, they will be players who rotate through there which is fine because they are talented enough to impact in multiple positions.

Our issue is with Walsh, he's the token quick player in there and opposition teams target him, block him out of it, so we need to have two fast paced weapons in there otherwise Walsh is just going to get hammered. Our setup has been structurally weak, we have just been targetting the wrong midfielders with our recruiting so we need to right this pretty quickle.

Ison is another name on our radar as an academy player, I think he could be a really good get. I would be happy if our midfield group in 5 or 7 years was Camporeale, Lord, Walsh, Butters, Smith, Ison and Walker. It's strong, it's quick, it's got great depth and it has players who can play in other positions.

Then there is our age demographic. Cripps and Hewett are about the same age. Walsh is a bit younger, same age as Butters. Then there is Camporeale, Lord, Walker and Smith all in that real young age so it gives us a few levels of age groups, makes managing the group easier.

The main issues with our midfield is lack of pace and agaility; the age demographic of it isn't eavenly spread out; our inability to have two fast paced weapons in there makes us easy to coach against; dificult for us to come out the front of a stoppage more often so we don't score enough easy goals from good forward running play; run and carry, two way run, run down ability of our onball group is as bad as it gets in the league. These are the fundamentals of breaking down opposition defences and zones as well as key defensive fundamentals which engage intercept defenders and fast rebound play; we also lack versatility and genuine rotations in there so midfielders who can also impact and play in other positions on the field is a weakness. I think with who we have and have coming in naturally solves some of it, but we are at our Lachie Neale and Patrick Dangerfield moment where we need to land a gun.

The turnaround that we want won't happen with taking a few young players in the draft and cheap players from other clubs. That will help but we need to do something drastic in the middle.
