Geelong - are they the AFL superpower and how can they be stopped?

I Can only assume you're an elias and don't actually barrack for Geelong, because if you did you would know, when drafted, Gaz was the equivalent of a 3rd/4th rounder and their was serious questions if he had the right work rate to make it.

That's not true. Ablett was a late 1st and there weren't too many questions about his ability to play AFL football, there were questions about his ability to transition to midfield and a few years into his career "the review" was a bit of a wake-up call on him coasting but there was never a doubt he was an AFL footballer.

Firstly, they are not a powerhouse. They were irrelevant nobodies prior to 2007.

Secondly, they haven’t had a real salary cap for the last 10 years. It’s little wonder they’re competitive season after season when you can just buy yourself a Patrick Dangerfield, a Jeremy Cameron a Bailey Smith, etc

In the entire AFL era, Geelong has brought in 2 players with All Australian level form or who were ranked in the top 50 players in the league: Dangerfield and Cameron. They got them for under but not for free, despite their free agent status. Compare that to Richmond and Lynch.

They also lost the best player of his generation in his prime.

Smith had not been ranked highly at all since his breakout 2021 season. He would not have been in the top 40 midfielders in 2023, had done an ACL and had all sorts of question marks over him.

I would challenge that they were irrelevant prior to 2007. Between 89-95 Geelong went to 4 grand finals and 5 prelims. Between 1996-2006 they were in the finals 5 out of 11 years, including one prelim and a semi final choke after being up by 5 goals.

Across the AFL era Geelong have easily been the best club. 50% of the time, Geelong have made the prelim.

You literally bought gary ablett from us in his prime.

Geelong are a superpower, and I don't see how they can be stopped.

Watch them get Sam Walsh and Charlie Curnow for a couple of picks in the third and fourth rounds of the draft.
