Imagine if Wells took Weddle instead of Clark in that draft.
IIRC, they were looking for an inside mid in the style of Joel Selwood, who had just retired, and all the talk at the time was that Clark had the potential to be that player. The draft is always a crapshoot, and players who were good as juniors sometimes don't translate that to the AFL level.

Gary Lyon giving Smith a pasting about being a better person during the week. I'd say Lyon not only has nfi, he also has wooden mirrors at his place.
Yeah, someone remind him of how he broke up Billie's marriage again and had to spend a year out of the media for his adultery.

What about the coach? Seemingly had no idea and no answers last night.
I think his playing list last night was a few beers short of a carton. Small forwards and pacey mids totally absent.

I think you have to judge the coach on the over-all season a bit and in that he's over achieved.

That's half the problem, they over achieved to get to top of the ladder, had they hosted gws in an elimination and got knocked out no one would bat an eyelid.

Huge soul searching for Adelaide. That was the limpest finals performance in my lifetime. Simply no finals footy attitude or application. Weak-willed and cowardly.
Wouldn't be surprised if they missed the eight next year. It's been a devastating performance for them, not just in finals but with the whole Rankine saga as well.

2011 and 2016 QF surely helped put that to bed.....
The post you quoted mentions knocking them out. The 2011 and 2016 QF were nice wins, but they weren't knock-out finals. Hawks came back the next week. In the case of 2011, they almost returned for the GF.

This would be an opportunity to beat them in a cut-throat final with the greatest of implications - a spot in the GF. Great opportunity to get one back on them; also the prospect they do it to us again.

Hawthorn - 51 tackles last night.

Only the Kangas and Tigers have a worse record for opponent differential in tackles over the season.

We have the 4th best.

I love numbers like that.

I know this now includes finals, but it's interesting how tackling pressure was a strength for Adelaide but they then turned to water in finals

I do wonder if the Rankine saga was the catalyst for their lacklustre finals performance?

Another thing.

I remember someone mentioning in the list management thread that they thought NWM would be insane to choose Port over crows, and i urged caution because the lists weren't far apart in depth.

If I were a betting man, and provided port keep butters, I'd wager Port goes above Adelaide next year.

The crows have a brilliant forward line but outside a scattering of names are thin elsewhere, especially midfield.

Port aren't outstanding anywhere and they desperately need 2x small forwards, but I think their list gaps are much easier to bridge. They will also get a new coach bounce from Carr, and they couldn't do any worse than this year where they were done from the start by a lame duck coach transition plan.

Not according to a group fans that keep shifting the goalposts.
This penchant for self-flagellation is tiring. Some supporters find some data point (knockout vs non-knockout finals) to beat themselves up with.

People develop selective memory about losses. Here it is about wins.

People would rather predict a loss and be right, than predict a win and be wrong. Delicate daisies!

It was a week of carry on in an attempt to minimise his suspension length for the slim hope he could play in the grand final

There's obviously a level of what-ifs about it, but had they accepted the initial 5 week suspension on the Tuesday with Rankine making his apology on the Wednesday before jetting off to wherever, can't help but think it would have allowed them reset their focus to the matches ahead much earlier

Small issue but BB's marriage was already over. Opportunistic prick Lyon just rubbed salt into wounds going for her

Don’t forget his real crippling addiction to coke

Bloke shouldn’t have a say about anyone’s character at all

Our run would be simply unstoppable.

Ahh well, can't win them all.
History is littered with what ifs. For shits and gigs, I do an alternative draft every year looking back five years ('cause I gots the 'tism) and pick who I objectively believe we "should" have drafted instead.

Most of our misses are with first-round picks. Later picks, we absolutely shine. Barely miss anyone from round 2 onwards.

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few players like Isaac Smith > Billie Smetds (yes, we eventually got Isaac anyway), Zac Merrett > Darcy Lang, Luke Parker > George Horlin-Smith.

Hell, as good as Daniel Menzel was for a period, and as much as a star he could have been if he wasn't injured, I think we all would agree that, given our time again, we'd have taken Nat Fyfe.

Another one that absolutely bemused me at the time was taking Jackson Thurlow over Brodie Grundy. Yes, we had an emerging Dawson Simpson, but Grundy was billed as the next Dean Cox.

Anyway, if the Hawks win the Weddle/Clark drafting, never forget, Hawthorn picked Mitch Thorp at #6 in the 2006 draft. Most of us know who we picked the very next pick. 😎

I don't count Isaac. He was all but signed up to us and Haw swooped in at the last minute.

How can you say that , the Crows were dissappointing in the finals no doubt , they did have the distraction they didnt need , which would have unsettled them

But a few weeks out from the finals - Ade in the showdown annihilated Port Ade by nearly 100 pts

Crows were Minor premiers and will be contesting hard again next season
