Is it? Why two years?

Because he's 22, has some great qualities to work with, and barring an unexpected turnaround we have two small forwards in Durdin and Fog finishing up next year...some stability is a good thing.

We also don't appear to be in the frame for a high end small forward in the next two drafts with picks largely tied up. So like or lump he's our best develolping option

We also don't know if he had offers from elsewhere.

Ffs... When will they learn that Motlop, Fogarty, Durdin etc are not up to it???
Agree, but we don’t have trade targets and / or capital to find A grade small forward options this year.

Our high draft picks are going to be swallowed up by F/S bids.

Only option is to find some diamond in the rough late picks , trades and rookies.

We don’t have the options to release him at this stage

I really don't get this Motlop pile on. He is only 21 (turning 22 soon) and has passed the 60 game mark now, why hand him over to another club for peanuts after we put the development time in. With a good preseason and a new forward structure I can see him having a decent 2026 and taking a step up in his development.

Agree

If we upgrade over him he'll be depth before being cut.

If he proves his spot in the side the low money (it wouldn't be costing us much) will make him a bargain contract

There's way more upside than downside with this contract.

Hardwick would have to have Curnow on his mind today.
He brought Tom Lynch into the Tigers to partner Riewoldt with great success.
Curnow and King would be a formidable combination with Read the third banana and chopout ruck.
Walter is the obvious centrepiece coming back to Carlton but what else will they have to add ?
Draft pick/s either way usually round out the deals but could there be other players involved here.
Rosas is out of contract and Rogers has one year to run.
They are all GC academy boys so it might be easier for them if one of the smalls joined Walter as a travelling mate.
GC (and the AFL) would be desperate for the club to go to another level next season.
Hardwick might just know the recipe …

I’m not sure why people are annoyed with this, Motlop is what he is, he’s not our worst small forward and he has a higher ceiling than some of the others. We have already delisted Fantasia, meaning our small forward stocks are already depleted.

I want to add depth to our small forward players, we have a list spot open to do that, if we want another, get rid of the players at the bottom of the list.

Im of the same opinion here... Id be shocked if GC now dont throw the kitchen sink at Charlie. Their window is fully open
Big changes this draft period i feel ... and very much needed

Pretty simple with Motlop. Good top speed and agility, tries to take the game on. Is undone by lack of strength through the core and an inability to stand up in tackles. Goes to ground far too easily and struggles to get his arms free, often clinging it to his body and getting pinged.

I'm guessing he's instructed to play his natural game and try take it on. Otherwise, it'd have been a pretty adjustment to give off the first option. He did get better as the season went on.

If he can get a bit stronger, start breaking the occasional tackle or at the least keep his feet and give the handball away, he becomes a far more rounded player.

Bit over the we’ve been shit for 30 years narrative

Have we performed to expectations- no

But have we bit shit this whole time- also no

Judging by that comment I think our mediocrity has crept into our supporter base. Since 2001 weve been bottom 4 for performance. No flags, no grand finals, no top 4 regular season finishes, 1 preliminary final. 5 wooden spoons. Since the retirement of Sticks, SOS and Braddles we’ve had successive playing groups content with occasionally winning, but outside of a few individuals, not nearly dedicated enough to succeed. It beggars belief that there are still rumours of lack of professionalism/poor standards among our playing group.

The club has also been a basket case in terms of how it has been run. We ignored the salary cap and the draft, as well as high performance, injury management, talent identification and development. Weve sacked coaches regularly. Hopefully the successive appointments of successful football operators like Cook and Wright might be the beginning of us turning into a properly run club like Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Brisbane, Sydney etc. That said, given how far behind we’ve been I’m not sure we are going to see the result for another 2-3 years.

Who would say no?

Swans get: Curnow, Silvagni Compo
Eagles get: Warner, De Koning Compo
Blues get: Pick 1

Means we would clear our compo picks that would get eaten by a Dean bid.
Since the club would be disappointed with pick 1 for Charlie on his own, throwing two first rounders into the deal could make this the worst proposed trade in BF history.

Mots is no world beater but he's still our best small forward as things stand and he's worth more to us than the token pick we would have received in a trade. Smart business to keep him on a short deal. Really can't understand the flack he cops. Has his flaws sure, but he also has a lot of upside. We've lost too many of our talented players for token picks and we can't keep doing that and keep getting younger/losing our depth.

They're rumoured to be keen on Elliott for a 2 or 3 year deal.
Might be better value than Charlie until their super star juniors mature.
Charlie was dreadful in last years finals campaign, as were the Crows 3 headed monsters this year.

Unfortunately so, CC has zero runs on the board in finals and may add to the disappearing acts up forward in September.

Well ... haven't we set the bar low. It's a brave punter that picks Carlton to make finals in 2026, 2027

How do you suggest we trade Mots and turn that junk pick into gold? Lists aren't made up of all gun players. I'd rather have a player with upside than a speculative gamble in the draft or a failed small forward as a delisted free agent.

Mots for the goal celebrations. Keep!
I've been wondering about the absolutely over the top goal celebrations that modern players display.
Is this to elevate their own personal 'brand', or maybe an AFL sanctioned American style attempt to attract International viewers?

Watching the slow motion replay of the 'Wizards ' showmanship on Friday night was nauseating.
