The AFL has made it harder to match bids and we haven't even had one draft yet to see how it goes without already talking about making it even harsher.
I'm starting from a different viewpoint. I said when they made changes it wasn't even close to enough.

Without anything happening to make me change that opinion I'm not changing it. The fact clubs are already trying to make the AFL go further says all you need to know IMO.

The clubs are seeing the Northern academies with bulk first round talent and have realised they are going to be starting three steps behind if this keeps going.

The solution is actually more access for other clubs, almost strictly zone selections.

I'd be happy for the lowest place WA side to pick first before the draft and then the other gets a pick. Maybe two picks each. Then the rest go into the draft, academy players added to the squads pre draft along with father sons.

If you push for that it will bring the issue into sharp focus, and it's never been about access to players outside of NSW and QLD- just when the scale moved up to allow all clubs a similar access it showed how bad it was.

Jai Serong and Box Hill lost and are now out of VFL finals.

His stats this season and positions across 20 VFL games - missing some as AFL emergency:
Disposals: 426/20 ‎ = 21.3
Marks: 146/20 ‎ = 7.3

Very versatile with his starting positions:
7 CHB
6 Wing
4 HBF
3 Centre
Other stats of relevance on wheeloratings (hopefully accurate, I know their SIs stats are dogshit):
  • 15.0 kicks, 6.3 rebound 50s a game, 2.0 inside 50s, 80.8% DE
  • 1.1 contested marks, 5.6 intercept possessions
  • 5.4 contested possessions, 0.6 clearances
Not sure that tells you a whole lot about his quality, more about the type of player. Obviously trusted to take territory and progress the ball from A to B. Decent aerial numbers aren't a shock. Fair effort on the contest numbers considering he's virtually never at stoppage. But the lack of clearance at lower level a bit of a worry if you're getting him to play wing.

Call a spade a spade - his surname is obviously part of why we're interested. But back-to-back VFL Team of the Year squad tells you there's something there.
Can anyone here comment on our Ollie Murphy? Wondering how he is developing. I didn't attend any Peel games this season. Thought last year that he looked a different player to the one we drafted. Had bulked up a lot.
Doesn't assert himself enough would be the big critique. His speed was always gonna hold him back a bit, but his aerial presence isn't what it was hyped up to be. Might be because he's playing with Draper, Davies and OMac. Or hasn't build up enough - tall, slender and lacking speed sounds like a recipe for a late bloomer. Probably have seen more "eye-catching" moments from Nicholls and Riddle. Next season is a big one: Davies, OMac, Murphy, Riddle and Nicholls are all OOC, and while they play different positions they're all in a way competing with each other for list spots.

As you'd expect, Murphy's numbers look a lot better when he takes the step down to Reserves:
  • Reserves (3 games): 15.3 disposals (11.3 kicks), 8.0 marks, 3.7 tackles
  • League (14 games): 10.6 disposals (7.1 kicks), 4.1 marks, 2.0 tackles. Also 0.4 contested marks, 4.4 intercepts.

Good summary. He shows glimpses but at times looks a bit giraffe gangly legged, especially when the ball gets out the back.

As it stands this coming pre-season I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Hugh Davies. Got a taste of AFL in 2024 and was a little tentative. Has really improved his contest work and good intercept marking.

So if things continue as they have Murphy and OMac likely delisted at the end of 2026. OMac solid back-up but expect that he’ll be surplus to needs with Draper and Davies both capable.

Draper was tried as a smaller /mid defender to try and find a role for him but that failed and after losing his way a bit found some good form as a KPD at the end of the year with Peel.

Alex Pearce will struggle to get through a full year so they will get opportunities. McDonald can also fill that Forward ruck role as appropriate.

Murphy got a bit of ground to make up to earn a new contract.

The QAFL would have been WAFL reserves (or even worse) standard. Having 1 or 2 bottom end Lions players actually playing per team wouldn't elevate it to a decent standard. Racking up 40 touches was clearly not seen as having much weight.

And regardless, the point is people wrote him off and didn't think he would be the high end playmaker he is now, just like you are giving Simpson no chance of doing this. Maybe give the kid a chance to see what he could do?

He had 14 and 18 touches when given a go at half back. It doesn't take much with natural progression and experience to lift that near the 20 touch mark and then we could have a reasonably damaging player. Maybe or maybe not Zorko level, but even an Amon or Impey level would be great.
So exactly what I said then ?

Well done

Great summary and in my opinion Murphy (only strengh is his marking) is a delist and try a and pick up a player with pace or can kick

No. You literally said there is "no chance" Simpson can be a high end playmaker.
Yes , that QB style , orchestrating everything from the D50 type no chance

His game sense and getting involved has been questioned a 100 times in the Peel thread not just by me

There’s a handful of players in the AFL with the rare combo of instinct and kicking skills to excel in that role anyway , doesn’t mean Simpson can’t be a handy rebound HB for us

Who do you see as the Zorko type in other teams out of curiosity?

Also I think that after watching Brisbane a few times the last month the rest of their back six is nothing special with ball in hand. Someone like Wilmot provides good rebound through a combination of speed and (at best) slightly above average kicking skills but their system works more on midfielders and half forwards creating easy options for the kicker than high end skills.

We play slow in a way that doesn't create attacking options then slingshot when the opportunity presents. Brisbane can play slow and still find ways to create scoring opportunities.

Yes. Not sure who the chubby face kid next to him is. I watch the live streams of Peel games and always think the criticism of him is exaggerated.

Yeh I feel we are jumping too early at this one.

He's behind some pretty talented players, you'd give him another 2 years on just potential

How many have we given Davies?

Yep.

A lot of those kicks into the middle weren’t great. But they trusted the receiver to win their contest.

At one point Rayner was 1v4, and they still went to him. It was an awful decision, but he was good enough to win it.

We need more contest winners. A Rayner or degoey type. Who at the very least will halve those contests

We've chopped five from our main list and three rookies, one of them from long term injury so effectively two rookies.

Draper needs to move from cat b to main, Voss should be up graded. Lets say Sharp remains a rookie.

That leaves either 3 main list openings and 3 rookie openings plus possible cat b.

I wonder if we'll move Jarren Carr to the rookie list. We'd be mad to move OMac. There are clubs looking for KPB depth. Maybe Sturt to LTI list. That will give us 5 spots to fill on the main list and 2 on the rookie list.

Gold Coast have lots of stars to pay
Especially if they snag Curnow
Play him in the Zane Dorko role
That is if Kiddy Coleman doesn't come.
I know both are eastern staters, but we have a few

Well you would of had Houston as another but not a great year
Port has Farrell
Cats are trying to turn that WA kid into one
North tried it with Daniel and it didn’t go well
Bombers moved Merrett back to do it in the last 6 games
Crows with Laird but he lacks penetration to really do it well
Whitfield at Giants

There’s not many , even less really good ones , unless you have a great option you can do just as well with runners anyway

We have a guy who could do it too but we see more value for young in the mids

Flanders would be perfect off half back or a wing, Victorian though and sounds like he wants mid time

I do wonder why Hardwick felt the need to upgrade him.

I don't think that happens if he is that good. It either means he is poor defensively or while he gets lots of the ball, his skills aren't as good as we think.

Jaspa Fletcher is absolutely elite.
