Get absolutely f**ked. Horrible way for a career to end for such a great guy
I hope that we find a way to keep him around the club with full support while he recovers, he absolutely deserves all the care we can give him.

Even if means keeping him on the rookie list for next year. Make it so.

Pretty the AFLPA will support players with their rehab if they retire with injuries and whichever club gives him the coaching role the Media is reporting as his next step will also give him access to the necessary facilities/staff.

I don’t understand why people are saying the club should list him in 2026.

He announced his retirement from AFL football. He was never going to play for us, or anyone else at AFL level, after the end of this month.

Or have I got that wrong?

Sad end to an amazing career. I’ve always enjoyed watching him play and he comes across as a decent bloke.

Favourite moment would have to be that shark and goal in the 2013 GF.

I’d have thought that as the injury happened in the workplace either the club or their insurer would be responsible for surgery and rehab.

Regardless, I’d hope (expect) that the club would do the right thing by a great servant of the HFC who steadfastly rejected overtures from other clubs and remained loyal throughout (saving lives of countless kittens in the process)

Good luck Luke and all the best for a bright future.

A terrible end to his career. Hopefully the surgery goes well and the club helps him with rehab. I have no doubt he will remain attached to the club for some time yet.
I would have been pretty amazed if the club hadn't helped him with rehab but confirmed here that they'll support him throughout.

And hiring him as an assistant forward coach or assistant development coach would make sense too. Given he has been doing it the last couple of years.

I did read recently that Clarko was offering him a player coaching role at the Roos. Hopefully Punky stays on with us in a coaching capacity whilst he rehabs.

The injury he suffered really was pretty traumatic and it's a long road to recovery for him even in retirement. This might sound weird but hopefully for him it was just the ligament ruptures with no tears to his meniscus. The ligaments can / will heal but meniscal tears can linger as they have poor blood supply which doesn't promote healing in them.

I do too but for coaching longevity it makes sense to go to other clubs as well. Rough went to the Saints first. Mitchell (obviously) to West Coast. Hopefully Clarko doesnt ruin him :)
