How come all of Mitchell's meetings with other teams' captains become public?
Is he such a smug little campaigner that he genuinely DGAF?
Dumb post, the reason it leaked is Petrero/Merrett decided to blow up the relationship with Essendon so that he can be released.

I honestly think this won't get done, purely on the fact that the clubs literally do not like each other and just won't be able to make an agreement on what is fair.
It will get done.

Essendon should not be trading Merrett to a top 8 club..
If he wants to leave he can go to a bottom 8 club.
Bulldogs made that mistake with Bailey Smith and it probably cost them a finals spot.

Desired is not star power. I generally desire players in most rounds, that doesn't mean I think they are the same calibre or have the same probability of success as others. Sure the first 15 or even more are capable of being good AFL level footballers. I'm not that interested in that, we have been terrible for two decades because we haven't been able to find stars, not because we haven't been able to find AFL quality players.

The worse a team is the more it needs those ultra prepared star players as the ones to drive the standards.
You should know by now afl draft picks don’t always = talent. Lots of end of first rounders who are star talents, for example Day is that star talent and was an early to mid teens pick. People look at the draft way to simply in regards to production. AFL clubs can recognise talent and it’s why draft picks are sought after and they don’t just disappear after the first 5-10. Hawthorn traded up into the late first round for Weddle aswell.

Caroline Wilson on the club leaking against Merrett:

"little acts of selfishness, direspecting AFLW players, little things ..."

That seems to make it untenable.

And I assume, cynically, that the morality police who claimed to care so deeply about women's rights in relation to the Bailey Smith incident (direct at a photographer rather than anything gender based) will somehow not care so much about this. Or even the media, with even Wilson suddenly deciding its "little".

Wilson: "Just sort of, when they're training ..."
Cornes: "kicking balls getting in the way?"
Wilson: "Yep."

Merrett is a knob and so is Smith, deal with it

From everything we have seen of Merrett in the past as a person I actually think he is frozen a little here.

Has always been a bit awkward and not very subtle conversationally. I genuinely believe he did not expect this sort of backlash and does not know what to do which is why we have radio silence.

It makes me sad but I don't feel betrayed as such. The guy wants success, let him go.

Hire a fan from a different team to put a deal together. If both clubs fans hate it then you know it is probably right.

All the way back at the start I actually said I was put in mind of Geelong '99. What seemed to be rock bottom (and perhaps it was) probably was a key part of the beginning of the era.

Agree he probably could have handled it a bit better but that's where you think his manager has a role

Both of whom were at least really powerful athletes that projected a potential if they could be developed. I’d be happy enough if the draft had some.

I think the Essendon Football Club should hire Dodoro as an "advisor" for the Trade Period and give him one responsibilty. Get the best deal possible for the club. Be as big a pr1ck as he likes, get as many noses out of joint as he can as long as he delivers on the best result for the club.

And there is no doubt that if Hawthorn want him, they will be giving up pick 8 and a player of promise (not a hack). Hawthorn supporters can act as they like but it won't change how this will play out if they go ahead.

Plenty of those types (high ceiling development types) in different drafts, comes down to talent ID and development.

Also I hate the “x draft picks becomes this anyway”. It is still the 8th pick in the draft, bids and whatnot aside, as they’re basically not even apart of the draft at that point. It is the 8th live pick. It’s been like this for a while.

Clubs that do this sort of shit or even think like this go nowhere.

Clubs that just go about getting better, removing emotion from their decisions rise quickly.

Essendon are standing at a junction. Big opportunity for them to wise up or continue to be a rabble.

Can anyone really blame Merrett for wanting to leave? He wants a flag, he's probably not getting that in his remaining years at Essendon.

Sure there are, but some require a much higher level of physical and football skills development, the worse the team is, especially one that's injury prone, the more demand there is for these types to play early and impact their ability to develop properly.

Second part is about the talent level avaliable. The draft is still a competition. If teams ahead of us on the ladder are getting access to higher level ready made talent, we have no chance to catch up, especially considering their system is less needing of immediate impact and more suited to allow appropriate development timelines. So getting the "8th pick" which is still getting access to the 12th-14th best talent. It doesn't matter that we didn't have access to them, we still have to compete against them and develop less ready talent beyond them.

I'd prefer we get worse picks in a better draft where we are more likely to get players that will displace what we have already. For example we need to replace Ridley, the likely best prospect for that is Xavier Taylor who will probably go 8th-12th, last year we could have had pick 21 and taken Luke Trainor who is essentially a more skilled and developed version of the same player. With the next two drafts looking to be more talent laden, we should preference those picks in a trade.
