AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

not appreciating the highlights, doesnt mean they dont have them.
Same as rugby league, just becaue it's not a mark doesn't mean its not a highlight to appreciate. I notice you don't chime in for those comments though to support rugby league - only against ;)

I'll try.

Another day, another front page story for the Suns in the Gold Coast Bulletin. That's 12 of the last 15 days that has seen the Suns on the front page of the local paper. Just unreal to see how much the local media here has embraced us since we qualified for the finals. I've seen a lot more Suns merch in and around the city over the last fornight. It's great to see. Long may this continue.

Yep, there’s certainly a visible presence. Suns flags flying in front gardens around the city too.

In soccer, the highlights would be some fancy footwork or a good cross for a ball into the net.
In soccer, it doesn't happen that often so most of the game is players soccering a ball around.
In rugby, the highlights would be an intercept pass, a big hit or a try but most of the time
players are in a run/tackle/chip kick cycle.
IMO it's not the total absence of highlights ( as your hyperbole suggests) but the infrequency of highlights.
CH9 can put together a highlights package that looks awesome but in reality it's nothing like that.

To me, the highlights in AFL happen all the time. The beauty of a long precision kick, the banana kick for goal, the dribble/trick kick for goal, the high mark, the pack mark, the rebound spoil, the don't-argue/breaking the tackle, sprinting whilst bouncing the ball, the run down tackle, the rundown smother, the precision ruck tap to the running player, the slick-passing, etc.

its a friggin AFL forum. Im not a lawyer for the NRL. And the comment i responded to specifically referred to soccer. Get your hand off it.

With the Suns making finals this year, and getting a win, here’s hoping their crowds lift next season like other non-Victorian teams saw.

Freo, GWS, Swans, Lions Eagles had an uplift in attendances after making finals following a few down years.

Crows and Port don’t really have the same uplift following early success.

About 2 minutes into this interview (after the usual on-field footy talk), GC CEO Mark Evans talks about the huge Australian Football participation surge in Queensland, with Queensland about to overtake WA (having already overtaken SA in participation a couple of years ago) in numbers playing our game, behind only Victoria. He also talked about the urgent need to develop hundreds of more ovals to keep up with the demand for their use -

Great work by QLD, a blight on W.A and the WAFC, under the reign of the most useless AFL chairman in history and W.A local Richard Goyder.

The population of Queensland is 5.62 million whilst the population of W.A. has just reached 3 million.
Plus the AFL doesn't do the WAFL and SANFL any favours.

By percentage of population W.A is significantly underperforming for a footy state, they need a reset. It's not good their lack of talent coming through, especially if we want state of origin to be a success.

It’s true. I know of a couple of kids (13yo) playing for a Gold Coast club in Broadbeach and they have to train at 7:30pm on a weeknight because all the ovals are being used such is the demand. 13 yo kids training at 7:30pm on a school night.. Think about that 🤔

NRL Semi finals in Canberra and Sydney and Prelims in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Pointy end of the AFL finals very Melbourne oriented. Hawks finished 8th and they’re playing plenty at the mcg

Would’ve been good to get a brissy AFL prelim this year!
Didn't Hawthorn just play two finals in Sydney and Adelaide?

We just had a fabulous all Queensland derby last night.

What?

NRL mentioned again? What is this, the loyalty card program? Ten plugs and he gets a free steak at Gus Gould’s?

He wouldn't know. He doesn´t follow AFL. It lives free in his head htough.

Good because in Melbourne there is stadium that holds 100k people.

That means there will be 2 sell out prelims finals with close to 100k at each..

Things you can only only dream about.

Two things can be true. AFL will never overtake league here and the AFL can become the second sport here. I'm a Queenslander through and through and you can't change the culture here. It's like imagining a world where the NRL dominated perth or adelaide. I also don't like the narrative that the AFL needs to replace NRL here because both of these codes can thrive without taking each other out. There's a lot of lions fans these days that are also broncos fans, or fans of the dolphins. The point isn't to overtake, rather to become something else that Queenslanders can enjoy.

My impression is that there will be a mixing out between the two codes over time with NRL still leading in northern markets.

SE QLD seems to be leading the charge here which I'd also love to see here in metropolitan Sydney.

That's a common mistaken assumption that people make.
The AFL is about generational change and appealing to those who don't follow NRL.
Queensland is a state of over 5 million and if 50k attended NRL that would be 1% of the population.
That leaves 99% of Queensland for AFL to work with.

I also don't like the narrative that the AFL needs to replace NRL here

So why are you adding to it ?
We are talking about growing AFL not the demise of NRL unless you think that is the necessary procedure.

Well, looking at the Ausplay survey, it is saying there are 7,624 girls (14 and under) playing aus football in Queensland.....compared to respectively 2320 playing rugby league (i.e. 3 times as much), 9,139 playing touch football, and 2,596 playing oztag.

So the AFL has over 3 times the number as contact rugby league and you are left with touch football particularly doing a lot of heavy lifting.

What makes sense for the NRLW quality being perceived as better than the AFLW is

-far less players (there are only now similar rostered numbers in the NRLW to the AFLW in 2017 when it started)
-a far far lower skill requirement to participate

The latter being the biggest factor. The actual national participation of girls playing Aus football is 4 and a half times rugby league. It is 3 and a half times touch football if you really want to make out that is the same sport (I played touch football in mixed teams with people who wouldn't even know there are two rugby codes).
Some good points, in relation to AFLW v NRLW, I think all those variations being Touch, Oztag, Sevens, Union, League and adding the Pacific Nations all play a part in having a greater development pool for the woman's game in these early days of the sport. Yes different sports, but a lot of similar fundamentals across them all. Would love to see the AFL to continue to invest in grass roots up here they way they are and the way the Suns AFL & AFLW teams have a huge amount of involvement with junior footy, its great for the junior and youth game here.

I know its contentious with the Suns Academy, but for kids up here its a real draw card to stay in footy... Coming from Melbourne and seeing the difference, it's imperative for it to continue..

Part of the problem with relying on Auskick numbers to gauge growth in the game is there are a lot of kids enrolled but how does this translate to later adult participation or engagement with AFL. I know some families in Sydney who have kids that play Auskick and a bit of soccer or netball (and not rugby league or it's variants) but barely even make the connection to AFL, the families and their kids follow NRL or EPL teams. They were enrolled at school and play it because their friends are playing it and their parents enjoy them playing in some sort of low contact team sport. It's a bit like Soccer a lot of kids play it but doesn't mean it translates to supporting A-league etc. It's the same with rugby league using variants like Oztag in participation numbers, many participants don't necessarily make the connection to NRL or follow NRL teams because they play Oztag. It's good for the game that there are these masses of kids playing auskick and I agree it would be a multi-generational shift, however it's a shift that hasn't seemed to happen for Soccer in it's decades of kids playing it.
