2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I don't see how losing Marshall (while contracted and the bulk of his salary has been paid) benefits us more than keeping him. Especially for a poor pick in a bad draft.

TDK was targeted to pair WITH Marshall and also to allow Marshall/TDK to support King.

The Membery comparison isn't relevant either. Marshall has more years of quality football in him than Membrey, is contracted and is filling a position on the list we don't have great depth in. Membrey was moved on because we have Keeler, Pou, Owens and Wood.
Keeler who played a handful of games (as a backup ruck no less) Pou who was injured and Owens who was down on form?

More to the point you think using somewhere around $2.3m of the salary cap on two ruckmen when no other challenging club is playing two ruckmen in the same team is a good move.

I don’t really care if we keep Roma but the logic here and ongoing logic of the justification to wanna keep him is nonsensical.

Having lived there, the locals are happy for the Northern Islanders to think poorly of it and stay away, I wouldn't want shitheads coming to my place and whinging and moaning about it.
Same applies with Adelaide, all the Melbourne nufties with their heads stuck up there arse...can keep them there.
Yeah the made up bullshit about SA makes me laugh, plenty of good things to do and see there , same as most places but it only takes one to say Adelaide is a sh1t hole and the sheep follow, it's a common theme on here ,

I don't care if Roma has moved in with Jeremy Cameron, if he doesn't net us SDK or the pick that we can use to get a gun player in a trade - then he's a St Kilda player next year.

Two years to go on a low contract, just keep him. Even a first for Roma will be a pick close to 30 in this draft. I'd honestly rather have him in the VFL than hand him to Geelong on a platter.

We need Roma draft pick from Geelong so we can get Neddy Flanders to the saints.

I suspect the club will also take this position and whatever suggested pick exchange will be irrelevant as any trade will be used to secure a senior player and not a draftee.
So SDK or perhaps Flanders would need to be the outcome or it won't fly.

So I disagree but I applaud the honesty. At least it’s not someone trying to claim Roma is all of a sudden gonna be a 60 goal a year forward.

If you wanna keep Roma that is absolutely fine just say this and be real about why.

Well its the only reason we should keep him. Dodson can back up or Keeler can ruck. If we have a crisis, pick up a Boyd type in the MSD.

Like you said its probably BS.

Also - no she's not.

Grand - how well do you know her? If the info is correct, can you not deny she's clearly driven by money and irresponsible in terms of sharing private information which effects a broad spectrum of people at the Club? How do you think RTB and SOS will welcome her at the next Club function? Bloody awkwardly to say the absolute least I'd suspect!

We gotta take this attitude all the way. We should have done that with Jack Steven. Essendon should do this with Zach Merrett. Gotta stop these teams from paying unders for contracted players. If that means those players play VFL or don’t play at all for the next year - good

The players select the captain. I would put my faith in them to know more about it than anyone outside the club.
Fair but I think his on-field attitude last couple of seasons has been poor, along with his leadership; his performances underwhelming for the majority. Not all of them mind you, he's been a warrior and had some ripping games/couple of season's there and I've a tonne of respect for what he's brought to the Saints over the course of the journey. However the time to move on is NOW.

Another thing I noticed this year and maybe last year also in photo's and press, he puts on this strained, fake smile - there's nothing natural about it at all. I know that smile myself. Go back to the photo's of him early days and it's a completely different Jack.

My read from afar is he would be pretty pleased to get the feck out and finish his career elsewhere and I think we should facilitate it. Personally I get the impression RTB and JS have never gelled.

Keep Roma, **** the Cats and we need big men.

How does that work, logistically?

Do Stuv & Merrett still attend training, knowing they won't get picked? Do they still interact with other players? Would Zach Merrett wander over to Nate Caddy at some point and just warn him of falling into the same trap that got both Merrett & Dyson Heppell before him?

Would you really want to be paying a couple million dollars to a VFL player that's getting in people's ears about how ****ed the club is?

And where's the accountability from the club?

Merrett's been sold on a roadmap that had the team playing finals by now.

Is losing Draper & Ridley part of that plan? What about pushing out Gresham, Laverde & Sheil? The failed development of Perkins, Tsatas & Hobbs?

Injuries hurt this year but they've been hurting that club for a decade due to mismanagement. It's why Joey Daniher left.

Why would Merrett have any faith that Reid & Cox are going to live up to potential?

The idea that Merrett's the bad guy here is laughable. The Essendon PR machine is working wonders at turning this into a league issue around trading players without consent when people should be focused on asking WHY Merrett has made this choice.

Don’t care what they do, but if merrett refuses to walk back through the door, it doesn’t mean Essendon should let him leave for peanuts. Keep him for another year and tell hawks they’ve got 1 more year to get a worthy trade together.

If they didn’t want to be held to a contract, they shouldn’t sign a long contract.

Peter Ryan & Marc McGowan - The Age

Heath is taking a 3 year deal at the demons. They were the first of several clubs to come after him. He sees his path to being a number 1 ruck easiest at Melbourne behind Gawn.

Trade required.

Good mates with Windy and trying to leverage that. However Windhager wants to stay with the Saints. His future should be sorted by early next week.

They really want Flanders and King is a big fan, he has already spoken with him. But he will Meet with the 4 vic clubs to pitch to him what his future would look like with them.

Demeaning and embarassing that she notes an extra $400k a year in his salary (remembering this is his job) is too good to refuse?

Seriously this ****ing board and is obsession with labelling every wife or partner as some money grubbing gold digger.

I can tell you right now if i got offered a 60% pay rise for the same work right now i would discuss it with my wife and i can tell you exactly what shed say.
I agree with you.

But both Wilkie and partner need to know how hard doing an actual deal will be.

Him being made a crazy offer is the easy part. He would need some assurances a deal can be done before he blows up his chance at being captain and walking back through the doors.
