Starcevich does all that?
No, but if we want Harley Reid to not demand a trade next offseason or the following one it would be a good idea to recruit some players who are widely viewed as good AFL football players. I doubt he'll be too excited to see a couple of WAFL retreads walking through the door.

It's rather pathetic but at this point we do just have to take anybody who can make the club better and is willing to come. We can throw around all kinds of names but unless they're actually interested in moving across the country to play for the absolute dregs of the comp, it's a moot point. I'd definitely be interested in someone like Jack Steele but I have no idea how keen he would be to move away from Melbourne, and given that his stats have been in decline for about 3 years now I wouldn't have too much confidence in him being able to produce much beyond the next year or two. He's always been a tough nut and has averaged 7-8 tackles a match for several years. I could see his body breaking down and slowing down pretty quickly.

BIG FOOTY BOARD: WE HAVE ALL THIS MONEY AND ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING! WE NEED TO OVERPAY PLAYERS TO COME. WHY WONT THE CLUB DO ANYTHING?

ALSO BIG FOOTY BOARD: I CANT BELIEVE WE ARE OVERPAYING FOR STARCEVICH AND WE ARE OFFERING TOO MANY YEARS! TYPICAL WEST COAST.

As others have mentioned his concussion issues have been widely exaggerated. He has been given a clean bill of health and Brisbane are desperate to keep him offering him a long-term deal as well.

IF and that's a big IF we are offering that type of money or length of deal who exactly is this going to affect?

We are losing Ryan, McGovern, Sheed and countless others off our cap this year and will mostly be replacing them with rookie contracts. We are probably already front loading the shit out of alot of contracts and will most likely do the same for Starcevich. I don't even know how we will hit 95% of the cap with him, let alone without him.

I wish we were hearing more names we were linked to but the reality probably is no one wants to come to a club that won ONE game.

You know how we fix that? By improving and winning games and despite what some might think Starcevich is a 26 year old premiership player who has played 130 games in 8 years at the Lions. He improves our list and maybe as we start to win some more games we will attract more players.

Well said mate, to many on here are thinking just about the player in isolation. He helps the team greatly. He won't make the same amount of mistakes our current backs do. He will bring strong leadership and work ethic to the group. He provides the experience our young players need to grow next to them. 6 years at 900k is no big deal. I would not be against grabbing May either if we can get him cheap to help the kids.

Christ, I would be taking on Petraca's contract and or offering Steele an offer he cannot refuse.

We must realise that just having 23 kids in the team will make us worse. We need a dozen very senior strong performers out there to teach the kids, protect the kids, win some games and start to build a team together with the kids.

Always a much bigger picture than just recruiting a player in isolation.

Does Starcevich bring anything to the club that's worthwhile? He always seemed to me as Brisbane's version of Tom Cole.

Same size, same games played, same position, both are "senior players with flag experience", statistically almost identical players.

We already have Tom Cole, do we want another Tom Cole?

Regarding Starcevich, you have to remember defenders look better in good teams. How is he going to fare when the ball is being dropped on his head for the 10th time in the space of 5 minutes. I'm worried he's going to become a Tim Kelly level whipping boy once he lets a couple of goals through.

We're likely getting him for a pick being handed to us (so for free)...not for 3 first rounders

If we empty his pockets when he arrives all the leagues best small fwds will fall out

We want an upgrade on Tom Cole.. which to be fair wouldn’t be hard.. if you even think Cole is the same level footballer Starcevich is then you don’t watch much football..

How do you know we haven't, and they said no.....
Seriously, people arguing that they'd rather spend the money elsewhere is such a flawed argument
Same with the anti-Dev sentiment. Of course we would all rather Erasmus, Sheldrick, Davies, Flanders, Simpkin or Rowell but if Dev is the best we can get and comes for free then so be it.

Will just point out that the reported contract offer to Starcevich of 4-6 years at up to $900k per season is commensurate with what Baker signed on for (5 years at similar money). So it’s about right given Starcevich is the same age as Baker was last year and is of roughly equal ability

We are also trying to prise Starcevich loose from a premiership contender rather than another club entering/in a rebuild like Richmond were when Baker left.

The offer to Starcevich shouldn’t be as big a surprise as it seems to have been

McCarthy had been a phenomenal pick up, shown incredible growth in such a short period of time. I genuinely believe he’s got AA level years ahead of him.

Cole was needed, a solid senior role player to set standards and lock down small forwards.

Newton showed a bit towards the end of the WAFL season, happy to give him another year.

Wrapped with all this news.
McCarthy was outstanding in back half of the season - excited as to what he can bring with a full AFL pre-season
Newton showed enough to be given a chance and Cole was solid enough and deserved another year.
Starcevich is a rich man's Brady Hough - excellent lock-down defender, can dabble as defensive midfielder and much better disposal than Hough. He's not a world-beater but he's a very solid player (wildly underrated by some on here) and will add considerable value to our side. No issues with the $900K p.a. but hope it's heavily front-loaded
