If his contract is front loaded, then he's already had the bulk of the money offered in his last contract. If he's blown all the money we have already paid him, that's on him. We're not a piggy back. So why should we re-negotiate with him for more money? He, and his dickhead manager, agreed to the sums involved.

Also so what if the CBA says the salary cap is going up next year. That's for new players or guys coming out of contract.

The way Charlie and his team are going about this, we shouldn’t be giving him a single extra cent regardless. Honestly I hope he’s not at Carlton next season. He wants to burn all bridges on his way out, but if he doesn’t leave, it’s gonna be awkward when his own fans are booing him…which I’ll be doing.

Pretty ordinary from Xander.
He knows Collingwood don’t have the assets to get Curnow off us with 4 years left on the deal considering we want overs, plus it would cost them more because we hate them.
So it is purely just pot stirring from a Pies supporter in the media.

Hope they get smacked tomorrow night.
Let em raise the stakes.

Could you’re imagine trying to negotiate with the pies for Curnow :tearsofjoy:

Yep. Have to hope Chesser and a few other additions along with a fit Walsh and Jagga can fix that balance a touch in 2026.

Cerra remembering how to kick a football would be nice too but he's more of a contested ball player these days.

Some elite half forwards who could consistently produce the lasers we saw from Frank the Tank late in the season would make a world of difference to the team.

We've got to find some viable long term solutions. We seem to be forever trying to stop-gap this with the odd fit game from Cunningham or Martin - then Orazio, Frank, etc. Love Fogarty's tackling but he's a very limited kick. Durdin is always injured or coming back from injury. Motlop is still a work in progress.

Contrast that with the dawks who have 3 ever-present small forwards who are elite kicks - and fast. Their kicking across the ground is so far in advance of our guys who look like weekend hacks from the amos by comparison. It's the biggest differentiator.

I think it's pretty clear that "if" Charlie is traded it will be heavily weighted towards Carlton.

There will be riots on Lygon Street if he's traded for Walter and Ned Flanders.

Net result from losing Charlie needs to be an A-grader in Butters or Gulden plus something else....which ain't happening.

I'd bite your hand off taking Walter+Flanders for 29 y.o. Charlie with a suspect knee.

I don't think there has ever been a time when a player has been expected to remain at a go nowhere dead end club. Particularly if they are one of the leagues top players. He has been part of a rebuild and has seen what that is like and he would be sceptical of us doing that and the possibility of this rebuild resembling the one which was going on when he arrived at the club. Knowing he hasn't got forever in the game and that he is well past the half way point of his career, he would be looking at whether he thinks he can win a premiership with Carlton or whether he has a greater opportunity to go elsewhere.

Remembering that a few years ago many players bought into the idea that we were building and about to become a premiership threat, instead the opposite has happened and what the players brought into, on the back of having faith in the club and those administrating and managing it, has failed and the club is back rebuilding the list.

The players have shown faith in the club, coaches, list managers etc and they have let them down. We were and should have been challenging for the flag, not rebuilding, that's not on the current playing group, that is on our coaches and list managers and also our head of football.

A lot has also changed in Melbourne. I don't live there but travel there a lot and have for over 20 years and all I can say is things have got bad in a lot of ways. I can see that it's not just the club but people, particularly at his age change and mature and want something different in life. I can see why he would want out of the place as well.

I agree, but players may not. They would have a lot of questions. We have proven nothing in our history recent and long term that this will be true.

His current contract would go with him. Most likely.

He's been winning colman's so he's no slouch. He's struggled with fitness and injuries this season. Wayne Carey only kicked 25 goals in 1997, he kicked 80 the following season. People need to get over this.

Our top end is not our issue. We don't have the players, we have been too slow when adjusting the list for modern footy. Looks like we are having a crack now, should have been 3 or 4 years ago though. Injuries and other issue played a big part in our season this year.

People reckon Geelong players are the way they are because they are tougher or better cultured or whatever. Sure to a point. But the club promises a lot to the players and it delivers and the players return the favour. Our club has mismanaged the list and has sunk to the current level. I've been callin this coming for years. It's not the current playing group, it's the club. Clubs which promise and can't deliver lose players.

Curnow can go to Gold Coast or Geelong, play under a proven coach in a finals side which both look good for next year, play for a flag or... He can stick with one of the worst clubs of the last 20 years which has proven nothing and looks to have peaked with this list back in 2023 and is now rebuilding trying to catch up to the rest of the competition because it did not pick up that modern footy is played completely differently to how it was played in 2021. He's 28 with a history of injuries. He playes in a forward line which is structured so the defence goes to him and crowds him, he plays in a side that does not move the ball well. Melbourne has become an insane islyum, Geelong, Gold Coast or Sydney are probably more appealing, especially if you surf.

Here’s a tight executive summary of that post:

The poster argues that Carlton’s continual rebuilds and failures have let down players who previously trusted the club’s promises. Elite players like Curnow, now past the midpoint of his career, may doubt Carlton’s ability to deliver success and instead look elsewhere—especially at proven, finals-bound clubs (Geelong, Gold Coast, Sydney) under strong coaches. The issue isn’t the current playing group but poor list management, coaching, and leadership. With Melbourne’s lifestyle also becoming less appealing, a move makes sense given his age, injury history, and desire to chase a premiership.

I got a rebuttal while I was there

Carlton’s future remains promising because the core of elite talent (Curnow, Cripps, Walsh, Weitering, McKay) is still in its prime, and younger players are beginning to step up into meaningful roles. Injuries and transitional growing pains have exaggerated recent struggles, but stability in coaching, improved list balance through smart drafting and trading, and lessons learned from past mismanagement put the club in a position to rebound quickly. The defensive system and contested game are already strong, and with a few tweaks to speed and ball movement, the list is still capable of contending within the current window rather than starting another long rebuild

Again another strategic play.

I think Charlie’s management are leaning on all their mates in the media; first Barrett (Geelong) and now Xander (Collingwood) to drum up more pressure on GC and Sydney to get more serious and flexible with putting some “off limit” player names on the table.

And just got him into a crowd shot at the MCG 🙄
