And the fact that we couldn't even consider drafting him is yet another reason why we need the academies just to compete.

It comes a time if further reductions are made to the academy and funding is cut you have to start backing your club and draft these types of players otherwise you fall into a endless pit.

With hindsight, I still feel we should have drafted Weddle even if we were worried about the go home factor.

I would rather draft a really talented player and risk losing him in 4-8 years. Than what we ended up doing in that draft.

(Three years later I still don't understand what our thinking was. Whether there really was go home concerns with Weddle. Or we just didn't rate anyone apart from Konstanty.)

Of course with hindsight it would have been a better move than drafting Konstanty. At the time however, they probably didn't see a noticeable gulf in talent between them and therefore went with the one with less flight risk. That doesn't change the fact that we were (and will continue to be) deterred from drafting certain players while most Victorian clubs, not only continue to be preferred destinations for free agents and trades, but face almost no issues with 95% of their draft targets as well.

I find this kind of data super interesting.

I start to think of the reasons behind it, the player profiles, how it impacts the game, how it impacts match-ups, what changes each team might try to make etc...

Like the introduction of the player heat maps - It really helps drill down into the stats & make more sense as to the supposed efficiencies/inefficiencies too.
