He's already past him.

Comfortably.
100%

For longevity alone but also for being better at dragging his side out of holes and stepping up in key moments.

One of the greatest big game players I've seen.

Legend status, greatest player of his generation, perhaps only Ablett Jnr and Franklin at his level.

Nope, people are just marveling at Dangerfield being a dominant force at 35 years old when his body should have broken down 5 years ago like Fyfe.

You need serious help, to have ignored the fact that I've stated almost the exact same thing in this very thread.

Trying to help you at this point. Get another crush. Maybe another hobby.

Even a gig explaining entry level financial terms to year 7 kids.

But for the love of God, post something that adds to the conversation rather than always being on the pounce.

When Hawks and Bombers supporters are teaming up to contradict you, it's time to re-think your life.

Ok now do the same for Selwood?

16 complete seasons he missed the finals once. 355 games all for the Cats.

245 games as Captain
2 elimination finals
1 semi final
12 Preliminary finals
6 Grand Finals

He pulled so many games out of the fire for us, either as the match winner or the ignition source.

Love Danger and he had one of the all time great performances last night. But as a Cat I simply can’t have him higher then someone like Selwood.

But you are certainly welcome to your own opinion.
Danger is an infinitely more impactful player and superior finals and big game player.

You raise valid points. Selwood was unbelievably important for us for 15 years and bridged two successful eras. He and Hawkins were the backbone that allowed us to keep contending and refuse to slide down the ladder (obviously along with Scott).

Dangerfield has taken over in that role since the day he walked in the door. That only makes 10 seasons so far, but he was been in our most important few players for every one of them. Overall as a player he has hit higher levels and his body of work is above Selwood's. But the two club thing can be raised much like Ablett Junior, who was a very nice player on his retirement stint at Geelong but wasn't doing what Dangerfield has done lately.

I'm getting really good at brushing off the ad hom and abuse, but do advise you to keep things civil and on topic.

This is a thread toasting Patrick Dangerfield and everything I have added is relevant.

Is he in the top 5 all time at Geelong ? I’m not so sure .

I'd be very happy if he sat alone at the top of that ranking list, because it would mean all of those other Cats players weren't any good.

But as an outsider, I can't quite fit him in that group.

Which is not to undersell him, or anyone else that doesn't quite crack it. To be in the top 5 all time conversation at any successful AFL clubs is to breathe rarified air.

Two club players are harder to rate in that sense. People automatically include Ablett Junior but he did spend 7 seasons at the Suns, including 4 of his very best years.

It's probably best to rank Dangerfield among two club players of the AFL era. I assume most have him behind Ablett and Buddy in the modern era on that front, which is fair enough. A couple more strong years and finals series, then the gap would continue to close.

An insult to say his body should have broken down? It doesn't make physical sense that he can still do what he does at his age.
Are you on mushrooms or some other mind altering substance?

Im praising your champion player.

Hes a Malcolm Blight /Voss/ Hird/ Carey freak who can change the match within minutes.

Get.a grip.

You're yelling at clouds. You said I was insulting a champion player. The comment made no sense. I have been universal in my praise for him and did not accuse you of doing otherwise. Chill pill time.

No player in the history of the game has enjoyed such a personal ride from the umps and more broadly the teams ride .
He’s tenure as players association president and all of Geelongs connection / past employment within AFL house had served them well .

Astonishing is the only way to describe the ongoing decision making which alters momentum .

He gets a whole 1.6 free kicks awarded to him per game. Wow.

For perspective, Nick Watson who touches the ball 11 times a game, averages 1.5.

Oh yeah, Dangerfield is totally carried 😂😂

If he wins the norm Smith next week he is absolutely up there. Brilliant player and always seems to play better in big games.

One of those guys that can lift a team on his shoulders. Huge contested ball player. I think almost the best I've ever seen

Where would you rank him if he won a Norm Smith medal?

This will be his third Grand Final I think? Good opportunity to win a Norm Smith.

Patrick Dangerfield - Prelim Finals Record

Games: 9
Goals: 10
Possessions Ave: 27.50
Goal Ave: 1.11
Goal Assists Ave: 0.88

Pretty good i reckon. Last night's game against Hawthorn - his best Prelim Finals match.

Geelong premiership player x1
Geelong B&F x3
Adelaide B&F x1
Brownlow medallist
8x AA
AFLCA
Leigh Matthews Trophy
Gary Ayres Medal
360 games
Geelong Captain

He goes down as an absolute AFL legend.

His ability to galvanise the team and create the spark is what the greats do. He’ll he judged heavily next week, and his performance could elevate him to a bigger star. However, I will say this, a poor GF next week and a Geelong loss diminishes his impact at the pointy end. He must turn it on. It might be hard to emulate last night, but if the Cats are up against it next week he needs to ignite the flame.

He has done enough in his career surely in terms of ranking players - but where to rank him is always a tricky part.

Surely Geelong won't be fully reliant on him in the Grand Final? Good teams dont do that.

Of course they wont. But if they are in a pickle and need a spark then you’d be looking to that man to get it going. Look you can’t really rank them. Just put it out there that he is an absolute champion.

Higher than he is now? Of course, a norm is massive. Likely a 2x premiership player and norm smith medallist. I think he does, yeah. Because it’s a team game. 8x AA is great, as are his best and fairest awards but a norm is huge.

Martin’s legacy is his ability to change finals and impact them. As was Hodge. They stepped up when it counted. I am not saying it supersedes what PD has achieved but if he won a norm it just elevates him to another realm.
