Sides like Hawthorn and Richmond have been efficient in their MCG finals this century.

Collingwood and Melbourne...not so much.

From 2000 onwards, Collingwood's record at the MCG in Finals against non-Victorian teams reads:

2025 PF: lost to Brisbane
2023 GF: defeated Brisbane
2023 PF: defeated GWS
2022 SF: defeated Fremantle
2019 PF: lost to GWS
2019 GF: lost to West Coast
2018 SF: defeated GWS
2013 EF: lost to Port Adelaide
2012 SF: defeated West Coast
2011 QF: defeated West Coast
2009 SF: defeated Adelaide
2007 EF: defeated Sydney
2003 GF: lost to Brisbane
2003 PF: defeated Port Adelaide
2003 QF: defeated Brisbane
2002 GF: lost to Brisbane
2002 PF: defeated Adelaide

17 games: 11 wins, 6 losses

Pies lost to a higher ranked team who are also very familiar at the G, it was the Lions 7th game at the G in last 12 months.

Ground familiarity is important, the Lions are familiar at the G.
Being the better side in a big knockout game is the most important advantage of all.

Collingwood failed at home again in front of their million supporters. It happens.

At the end of the day Collingwood weren't good enough and thats all there is too it.

The MCG Tennant Group was let down today..

Throw in the 2-4 record against Geelong and it becomes 13-10. A middling home final record for a largely top 4 team.

Mind you Richmond have only played in 3 MCG finals against non-Vic teams.
True but then once you include cleaning up 2-0 against Geelong in finals there, that's 5-0 in proper home ground finals. 100% conversion rate as opposed to just over 50%.

All non-Vic and Geelong supporters should be glad it's Collingwood of the MCG teams who finish top 4 consistently - because they will always give you a sniff at home when it counts. Even their 2 flags this century involved unconvincing grand finals at the G.

A 57% win record.

Basically the same as the MCG record during H&A, where we go at basically the same rate at the G and away from the G.

Wonder when people start to realize that playing at a ground against an opponent who is also familiar with the ground ain't really any advantage.

A proper home ground advantage, is when your opponent plays just 1 single game at the ground.

Hawthorn and Richmond are examples of MCG clubs who utilise their home ground advantage in finals. The Pies were favourites today and lost again. Only the SA clubs would have lost such a high proportion of finals at home as favourites this century.

Look, when it comes to umpiring, you're probably right. Even the gov parade shenagins is not Vic bias. I don't think there's any Vic bias conspiracy to help Vic teams win in any particular game.

But fixturing - prime time games, WA games based on Vic TV slots, GF location, brownlow location, plus commentor bias & propping up small VFL teams that shouldn't be in a national comp... That's the actual Vic bias
Meanwhile players not commentators win games of footy and there's clear non-Vic recruiting advantages in terms of academy zones.

Back when the Hawks would finish top2 on the ladder they had a great record, they went 11-1 in MCG finals as they were the best team.

They have gone 1-5 in their last six finals at the G, including two straight sets exits. The neutral MCG doesn't help much if you ain't the best team

Pies are similar, finish top 2, Pies have a 10-2 record in MCG finals.

The Pies "problem" is that we finish 4th or 6th a lot, and then do well to even make it to a PF or GF and then lost to stronger teams who are also usually familiar at the G themselves.

Disengenuos posters seem to struggle to understand the nuanced details though.

The Colliwobblers have lost more home finals to non MCG tenants than any other side this century by a long way. More games as favourites too. Drew to St Kilda and scraped by Brisbane minus Washcroft in 2023 in the flag years they did have. Just not a big game club. They waste their massive advantage more than should be possible.

yeah quality unemotional post. good stuff.

I get the fixturing stuff for sure. Gf location etc

But think about it logically.you want prelim grand finals etc at the mcg with insane atmosphere and 100k people in a great city or you want to do it in a piss ant town like Deadlaide. Imagine a grand final in Deadlaide with 50k people. Hows that gona look for the game? and then what you gona do after when they close shops and roll up the footpaths at 5pm? Drink a farmers ice union coffee and go hang at the pie cart? Take a trip to Hahndorf and drink a pint and look at a tree. Hang around at the Malls Balls???

You see the problem.

AFL distributes at least $12M to all clubs. All clubs exceeded this figure .
West coast got $16M

Brisbane received $34m
Goldcoast $ 34m
GWS $34m
Sydney $26m

St Kilda $ 23m
Bulldogs $ 23m
North $26m

It’s not the VIC clubs taking the bulk of the “propping up”

I do see the problem. Victorian flogs that still think they ‘sportz better than other people sportz’ with their heads firmly planted up their ass.
