You think Silvagni was a multi-faceted ‘attacking’ defender running off the backline? Lloyd did play on both of them at the very least. Ok Silvagni had that versatility but he also had the opportunity to do it. If Scarlett got chucked forward for a period who knows what he would have done. Doubtful he would have been as good a forward as Silvagni was when he spent time there but no one will know, will they. I doubt Silvagni would have been the attacking weapon off the backline that Scarlett was. But he also never got that chance either.

I did not say this at all. I am saying SOS was a far more talented footballer. Either you see it or you don't, there will be no convincing those that don't.

If that’s the case why did he offer such a basic lockdown approach in defence while Scarlett was such a skillful and creative ball user out of the back? Scarlett was one of the best kicks of the footy we had in general play and pretty much drove a lot of our attack

Different eras with different (evolved) gameplans. All older players are bums on these lists unless we just consider talent.

Scarlett was a great player. The 3rd best I have seen after SOS and Rance.

Dustin Fletcher lmfao

the 90s: SOS over Dench in the team of the century is the dumbest call ever, cowabunga dude
the 2020s: Scarlett over SOS in the list of best players is the dumbest call ever, for realsies bro no cap

Peter Matera - come on now - he absolutely shades plenty of those guys.

Betts before Pav is a bit rich
3 season ave of 17+ disposals 3+ goals
6 AA (FB and FF)
6 bnf
350 games 700 goals
Playing for one of the most unsuccessful and low scoring teams in AFL era.
A bit like Fyfe with injuries the what could of beens if playing for Geelong or hawks

Not sure success rate should be your MO for making that argument: Betts had a lower win rate across his career

Pav shits over Betts.

Pavlich was a generational talent.
Booted 700 goals and a small portion of that was spent away from the forward line.

Today, everyone adores a player who can stand up in finals. Pavlich was one of the best big game performers of his era.

It's been said to death . . . but had he played at any one of the Victorian clubs, his legacy would have been through the roof.

If Cousins pulled his crap together after the premiership & Judd hadn't hurt his groins in 2007 & stayed in Perth........ I'll always wonder.

What does "of his time in footy" mean?

From when he was born? Age 12? When he was recruited? Til now ?

Even if it is from when he joined Essendon in 1996, he obviously highly rated the last couple of fading years he saw of GA Snr and Dunstall...

Would have made more sense to stick to his long term contemporaries and those who have come since if he's calling it 'his time in footy'...or just run with 'Lifetime' or whatever..

Carey has always been overrated - not that he isn't among the best. He certainly is.

But he has become this strange purity test. Every flog seems to think that if he isn't listed as number 1, then their own football knowledge will be called into question. And I will be savaged for that opinion accordingly.

Stats are not everything. But they do matter. And his stats in no way justify quite the level of wank he gets.

Also Scarlett over SOS is another clown take. Not the same level of footballer - you think Scarlett kicks 200 goals on top of being the best defender in the league?
The most absurd post I've possibly ever read.

He was robbed of 2 Brownlows ('93,'98), could have won another 1, his stats in a losing Prelim as a 21 skippper (24,6 goals, 14 marks) suggests he was pretty decent, coming of (32,4,10) in the Qualifying.

Didn't just beat his opponents, dealt with opposition Ruckman dropping in to his contests and at least 1 other helping defender coming over the top all who could attack his arms within the laws of the game.

The best player there's ever been, Ablett has the greatest highlights, Lockett the most goals, Mathew's the best of his era and all before him. There's 4, that's it. Pick 1 and move on.

I picked W Carey. Who would you pick?

The only thing I can say is that it was his choice to leave - he wanted to chase the big money. Interesting that Ablett Jnr, Judd and Franklin all left their first clubs. Martin stayed put, there were offers from Adelaide and North Melbourne in the $1.6 mil to $1.7mil range, he chose to stay at Richmond for $1.1 mil or $1.2 mil from memory.
Ablett wasn't just chasing money he was escaping Geelong.

Wherever he went, including just to watch his brother play social basketball, he was mobbed. He is and was a reasonably private guy, it all got too much for him i think and he enjoyed the break from constantly being accosted when he went anywhere.

I always said that but plenty disagreed… those GC years put an enormous dent in his career. He should’ve been playing finals and big games in his prime, instead he was racking up meaningless possessions in huge
Football's biggest travesty was him wasting those years on the Gold Coast. Now this next bit makes me vomit, but imagine his legacy (in football output terms) if he rolled over to Hawthorn or Richmond instead for those dynasties after Geelong (or simply stayed a Cat and they won a couple more flags).

His level was incredible 2011-2014 but it cooked his body carrying the hopeless Suns. I think his peak would've lasted a few more years at a proper club. Probably moving to a forward-mid destroyer like Dusty 2014-2019.

His 2nd stint at the Cats he had some nice seasons but the body was only just hanging on.
If he didn't get his shoulder smashed in 2014 he claims another brownlow, GC make the finals and the history of that club changes. The May's, Prestias, Lynch, O'Mearas etc of the world don't leave and they probably have flags with Gaz jnr as captain. Then he's probably no.2 behind Carey.
