As it stands assuming Oscar gets band 1 we’d obviously have the best two kids then the Hawks selection would fall at pick 25 (Jack Dalton) then our 2R would get the best of the rest after Fred and would fall at pick 32. This list is based on talent and not club need.

So today we find out what shops the AFL will let us go hunting for at Christmas with the support package.

I’m predicting
  • 2 extra rookie Cat A spots
  • 4 additional Cat B spots with ability to prelist 6 players in the next 2 years
  • no F/S ability to prelist as the heat is on that topic
  • at least 1 end R1 or after our R2 that needs to be traded for a player
  • one additional pick and I’m expecting end R1 but hoping for end of non finalists picks in R1 (11 as it stands before dilution) OR and end R1 in 2026 that can be traded

I suspect there will be 18 unhappy clubs. 17 thinking we got too much and us believing it’s not enough.

Is is just Wish or Temu or can we get a better class of present?

Sullivan Robey capped off his amazing late rise into top 10 contention by kicking 4 goals for his team as they triumphed in the CTL Grand Final. Apparently playing with a cracked collarbone, and occasionally looking visibly in pain, he battled on manfully, throwing himself into contests with his usual zeal. It'll be fascinating to see just how high this year's bolter ends up going on draft night.

If we got all that, I think we should all shut up and quietly enjoy the offseason.

Where do you have him ranked in the open pool?

Would love it but don’t think we will get that much.

My prediction is we don't get any draft pick assistance, just the extra rookie spots and pre-listing of NGA prospects.

The latter is of little value this year because our NGA talent won't be bid on early enough (or at all) to make it worth anything. Next year it might be of some value, so happy to take it.

That will also be palatable to the Vic-centric media as it protects their precious Vic teams while also giving them ammunition to keep piling on us. Perfect outcome for the AFL.

The benefit of having extra rookie spots is still useful because we don't have the space to list them all currently. We only have 7 spots. 4-5 in the draft including Charlie Banfield and 2 traded in players/free agents would exhaust our capacity unless we delist more players.

A solid game from Greeves, not quite at the level of his match winning performance in the Prelim, but Eastern didn't need him to be at his best to take out the title. Ollie has been playing an increasing amount of forward late in the year and has looked excellent doing it, his aerial prowess again on show here and he demonstrated a bit of class with a lovely, dribbled goal from deep in the pocket. His decision making seemed a little slower than usual, resulting him nearly being run down on a few occasions.

"The latter" means the second of those statements, the one about pre-listing. You're addressing the former, which is the first statement about extra spots.

Be able to prelist is still an advantage as we can put them straight on the rookie list. Without prelisting, whilst we’d probably be able to match a bid easily enough, the player would be added to the main list - uses up a list spot and makes the extra Cat B spots redundant

Evans, Walley and Williams have all been invited to the national combine so there’s interest in them from other clubs - bids might not come early but Evans and Williams would both attract bids in a shallow draft

I appreciate the apprehension but Robey is looking more and more like a ‘can’t miss’ prospect.

His size and athleticism is going to make him a matchup nightmare both in the midfield and up forward. I’m also really impressed with his tackling - he takes down opponents with real ferocity.

If we can get the Port pick and grab him, Duursma and Sharp we’ll be laughing.

I have a sneaking suspicion Richmond will be looking at him very closely.

Might be a case of pick him at 2 or pass up on him.

For what it's worth he looks very impressive but with such a small sample size he's going to need to smash the combine to move up into the top 5.

I can’t see Richmond paying to move up. They take either Robby or Cumming at 3 then X Taylor at 4. Those 2 would be great acquisitions to their list build. The covered the talls last year and CDT has little appeal.

I am leaning to Duursma and Sharp at 1 and 2 u less the Drug Rats give an excellent deal. That would have to be 5 and 6 for 1 (ie Duursma) and possibly late points picks. If it is 2 then it’s for CDT and it might be 5 and 6 for 2 and our R2.

If I was managing the Bombers list (I feel dirty just writing it), they might as well cash in on Merrett and let the draft come to them and take CDT and Schubert with 5 and 6. They would also have the Draper FA pick (7 or 21), the Hawks R1, and Hawks F1 (which they could use to get Blues pick 10 given FS rules).

I don't think this will happen, if hypothetically one of our NGA players was a potential high pick, it wouldn't make sense to be allowed to just stick them on the rookie list before the National draft. Aren't there different contracts for players depending on which draft they are selected in? (e.g. 3 year contracts for first rounders now).

We would only have the ability to pre select them on the rookie list if they aren't selected in the National Draft.

According to this https://www.afl.com.au/about-afl/rookie-players it has been that way in the past.
pre-select local talent from the pool of players in their Academy between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts if those players nominated for but were not selected at the most recent National or Pre-Season Drafts.

at high level, its barely a advantage. reality is that its a handful of players in 30-50 range that get to go on a list early and allowing a few others 30-50 to go on main list. whilst its better than nothing, hardly worth getting excited over. I know I know, they are west Australians.

we need some picks where quality is better guaranteed.
