How good is all this Simpkin talk clogging up the thread though squashface

We’ve got people bitching that we might only get a pick in the thirties for an out of contract Chesser and a F2 pick for a 29 year old Ryan but a contracted club captain we should only be offering the Hawthorn R2 pick for

Get a grip on reality
It's the same value as Ryan really . Simpkins over inflated contract turns 15 into 30

Chesser is worth a packet of crackers

If Simpkin was to come to us, he’d cost the Hawthorn R1 pick we hold (currently pick 15) at a minimum

He’s 27 (same age as Baker, Graham and Waterman) and contracted to 2029 at a value reportedly around $1.2-1.3m per year

Not the worst option and has been a solid contributor for North through a difficult period

I’m pretty ambivalent towards him as a trade target. Definitely helps our midfield but the cost is up there. If it was just the Hawthorn pick I’d probably be ok with it

Doubt that it’s a live option though

Keys - TBH - I reckon the Hawks pick is spot on Both clubs supporters would complain its too high/low depending on which side you support - so you know it's about right. I wouldn't be at all surprised if WC would request NM pay some of that salary either.

Simpkin would undoubtedly add value for 5 or 6 years at his age.

If WC can work their way into 3 picks inside the top dozen (by splitting 2) & take a group of 3 youngsters say Duursma, and 2 of Sharp/Robey/Farrow, as well as adding Simpkin, Starcevich, Robertson and Young + their required NGA's - I reckon supporters should see that as a pretty significant positive change.

And to be honest - I dont think the above is a very difficult thing to achieve.

Interesting write-up on Swadling by Reading the Play as part of their top 50 ratings; seems like someone we should absolutely be taking a punt on. Also, looking at some of the other players in that list (Dovaston, Barker, Taylor), it seems this draft isn't as bad as everyone keeps saying.

Yeah I dont think its as weak as some say. They keep comparing it to Harleys year. This year is not expected to have superstars but many say there will be a lot of role players that will make starting lineups.

He can be worth whatever pick North think, but that doesn't make him worth that to us. Pick 15 for him would be a joke and we should fold the club.

In order to further avoid soaking my bedsheets with rage tweets i'm no longer going to post about him unless there's official word we might seriously consider, then I'll be back to pissing everywhere.

The problem with simkin is his large contract in both $ and years

Same with petrecca

Look at hawks who have pivoted to merrett the cheaper option rather than petracca .

Clubs don't want to give up huge capital when it means they will be hamstrung by that players contract also .

The players original team either has to take lesser value or chip in some salary to get better picks .

Swaddling is very much Dev pre draft .

Same deficiencies lack of pace and mediocre kicking .

Rodriguez has the same lack of pace but much better kick off both feet

Has Steele accepted a contract from the saints yet? I would still like to get him if the price isnt too high. We desperately need an experienced (decent) mid this trade period. Especially if as mentioned, Yeo might go back. I have zero faith in Kelly or Graham filling that role.

Looking forward to seeing McCarthy train and develop as a mid over the preseason.

Steele is under contract already until 2027

Question: Jy was in the midfield for North with LDU, Sheezel, Powell, Wardlaw. How many games did they win?
North learnt the hard way that you can’t win games with a team of only midfielders. Their key position stocks have been their biggest weakness for several years now. So much so that they recruited Darling last year.

That is a problem for a lot of clubs, but not us. Our list is so bad that we are barely justified in hitting the minimum cap spend. We could take on just about any contract, front end the sh!t out of it and then over the next few years we hopefully land Chad and some of our youngsters are deserving of bigger contracts to balance out the cap. With the cap increasing it doesn’t seem like sides will be stuck in a genuine salary dump situation though, Oliver was pretty close last year but it seems like clubs are managing to move money around despite some of the huge contract lengths.

Would we even bother splitting 2 in that scenario? That would be Sharp, Duursma, Simpkin, Starcevich and Robertson from our first four picks with the Hawks' R2, R3 and whatever we get for Chesser to cover Young, Banfield and someone else. All that without priority picks.

I guess it depends on
1) spot availability
2) how WC determine the "quality" of this years draft. If they have questionmarks over CDT &/ Sharp then why not let #2 become #5 & say #8.
The point of.my original post was to highlight that dradting in 3 x top 10 picks + adding some experienced and pretty good players in Starcevich and Simpkin (or Steele or Neale) + some workhorses like Robertson & Young - really changes the look and feel of the squad for the better.

I wont melt if we pick CDT but my concern is he may need 2 or 3 years to develop and earn a game, then he might be thinking about mommy and leave.

Other way round, mommy and daddy don't want him away from the family.
No parents do but should be irrelevant. This young generation need to harden the F up. They only play until the early 30's and they get plenty of time off.

Yeah for various reasons we shouldn't be targeting him, and it's extremely unlikely he'd want to come out here, but if for some weird reason he nominates us, we should be happy to play ball as long as we don't part with too much.
