I didn't say he had done his calf prior to the game

The suggestion is that the calf may have felt not quite right (hence the discussion with the docs) and they took the gamble given he didn't have a history of calf issues or anything.

Probably not the greatest idea given his age
You accused him and others of not being selfless. Bedwetting lunacy.

I was under the impression that:

A) This is what was assumed happened
B) What most have been alluding to when discussing it

Maybe I missed people suggesting it was already torn before the game started?

At the ground, all the talk was that he had been speaking to the doctor's during the warm up pointing to his calf

apparently we've shot Bambi.

I’ll support my club and players. I will not go off speculation and dribble from media. Pendles is in no position to assess his body after 400+ games is utter garbage. Why is it selfish when an assessment is being made by qualified staff on short notice? Disrespect and fantasies. The mind reading is flawed. Club legend.
Even Cornes said Howe was so valuable he picked himself. Checkers was difficult when Checkers, McStay, Membrey and Cox were not travelling well as forwards. That is indicative of team not player. From the words around the scratch match and Bobby returning his fitness assessment was so negative he was gone then. They left the “door ajar” for support reasons. Naicos has struggled with injury all year and has frequently not played at his best. The line is so fine. The only selfishness I can see is supporters tearing down club legends on SFA.

If he was under a cloud coming in the same as Howe and Miochek then I think the selection com have a case to answer, taking 3 blokes in who it must be said were way beyond 30 hoping they would all get through is madness.

If as Buckley said Pendles hurt himself against Melb nearly 6 wks back without fully recovering then I would it was say it was not a risk that should not be taken the same as Howe and Miochek.

Just another Collingwood balls up christ we have it down to a fine art.

Maybe give it another listen. Pendles was coming into the prelim doing the same prep as he did for the QF, which worked fine.

The calf was a new injury.

I trust that eliminates your disappointment in him.

In him? I guess.

In the club's management of him? Not really

Having said all that, speaking more generally, you do understand that players playing hurt/injured is essentially by definition selfish yeah?

Just because it's "normal" in the AFL, that doesn't technically change that. Each time you go out there carrying something you're rolling the dice on making it worse or causing "an imbalance" - as Bucks mentioned, elsewhere potentially causing a different injury.

That's a major reason why what Presti (and to a lesser extent Murphy) did is so revered to the point of making his 35 Jumper an ornament. It was the ultimate selfless act in an industry of selfishness. You have to have an element of selfishness in you to even be a professional athlete. Why do you think they all thank their partners/families for "making the sacrifices that allow them to do what they do"?

You went off half-cocked on Pendles. Maybe just own it and say you jumped the gun. Not sure how you could query the club's management of him. Sounded perfectly reasonable to me.

Your use of selfish is dumb.

Your presti reference is emotive garbage.

in hindsight its staggering they picked Mihocek and then had the balls to claim Hill wasn't fit enough.

yep ok new injury. I'm satisfied with that.

interesting he was carrying an injury for 6 weeks, that the club had been hiding, which ultimately caused the calf.

why wasn't he rested after Melbourne?

The calf was a new injury.
Bucks said in that interview that Pendles still was getting over a Quad injury 6 he picked up 6 wks ago against Melb, now let know if the Quad injury was on the same leg as the calf injury and if it was then I would say he had a ? mark over him before he took the field.

If Pendles was seen by 96.000 talking to the docs for 2 mins talking about his calf and then you expect people to think they had no inkling something was amiss, you believe what you want but I did not come down in the last shower

How good was his third quarter against Adelaide? He played that match. Your time line has some huge gaps in it. I’m still trusting the club not the attacks on the pies.

Easy to say after a loss.

I agree Mihocek shouldn’t have played, but players are playing through injuries every week.

Didak 2010. Pendles, Nick 2023.

It’s a great story when you win, but magnified when you lose. With Pendles I reckon it’s worth taking the risk.

I’m still baffled by the selection of Checkers who was known internally to have a ruptured toe tendon in his kicking foot, could barely train and had been operating in matches well below his normal level for six weeks. Exactly what kind of miracle were the selectors expecting of him?

Could/should have gone with the relatively uninjured McStay, who I imagine must be feeling pretty disenchanted with the Club.

Because mate they are covering their backs like in the past, If Pendles was carrying something for 6 weeks and was seen talking to the doctor before taking the field. I would say they had a bloody good idea something was wrong and he should have been pulled before he started and that they knew Miochek and Howe had not trained much and were passengers also.

Maybe start by googling Adductor.

Last week will be a good lesson for the Selection committee.
I would rather have had an underdone Hill in the team as he would have stretched the Lions defense as they could not have pushed as far into attack.
The Checkers selection if he had a ruptured toe tendon is just baffling if true - with a fit McStay - or has he been carrying an injury as well ?.

wonder how McStay feels knowing they picked a guy with an injured foot over him?

Disagree with the OP.

It's like damn if you do, damn if you don't.

Had Howe not played and someone else did and Pies lost.... fans here will blame Howe for being weak or not brave enough to play a PF even if healthy.

Same with Pendles, had he pulled out before bounce and someone came in for him and Pies lost, the same fans will say Pendles should have played through a sore calf.

Fans are very entitled. I'm 100% sure the team would refund your membership any day rather than put up with your entitlement.

Yeah I agree.

We're having this conversation because, ultimately, we fell short - but don't for a second think we fell short by a long shot. We made a Preliminary Final. We were just a few kicks off a Grand Final. Had we won, this thread wouldn't exist. Sure, I'm anxious about our average age. But it's a good idea to take a breather for a few days and reflect on all the good stuff.
