Just an addendum. Some recollections need to be viewed through the prism of time, and fading memories. Don't know if anyone saw the "behind the scenes" videos posted from the Collingwood centenary game at the G. One featured Liber senior and Big Demps in the players race, Demps telling Liber that Georgie Bissett lost the 69 Brownlow because he was reported for belting "Big Carl" (as in Ditterich, from St Kilda). Georgie didn't get his deserved BOG 3 Brownlow votes as he was reported for hitting Ian Robertson of Carlton (retaliation for Robbo betting a young Bulldog, so the story goes). Georgie got off, but lost the 69 medal to Bulldog Murray by 1 vote. Maybe Demps wanted it to be Ditterich, so in his mind/memory, that's what he remembers. Demps had the wood on Ditterich in pure ruck contest terms, but Carl had some "interesting" tactics to get under the skin of guys like Dempsey and Thompson...

"The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there..."
L.P.Hartley, one time member of The Go-Betweens, I think. 🤔😉😄
And just like Chris Grant, when he was robbed of his Brownlow, after the event the AFL/VFL changed the rules so such an injustice could never happen again. Of course neither Bissett nor Grant received their retrospective Brownlow but all was good as far as the AFL was concerned.

I’ve had this book since I bought it as a kid at the merchandise stall at the WJ Whitten stand. It only has a page on each player but includes some great insights direct from the players:

Yep, great book, one of many I own (I should add a list to dogwatch 's book thread). Co-author Steve Milne is the son of Rick Milne, footy memorabilia guru. Met Steve once as I was buying vintage Footscray cards from him, has an enviable collection of old Footscray stuff.

I also recently started reading Doug Hawkins’ biography from 1991. Great Read.

Got that one too, purchased a signed copy at the time. Met Hawk a few times since through "Sons of the West" men's health programmes in Ballarat area. Great to meet in person, my other half got a photo of Hawk and I, he asked her name, wished us all the best, and sounded like he genuinely meant it. Liber snr and young EJ were also involved, friendly enough, and nothing against them, but Hawk's personality shines through with every interaction. Enjoys a laugh too, even at his own expense. Brett Goodes was at one as well, as a men's health ambassador at the time, a bit shy/reserved, but also comes across as a genuine, lovely fella.

Bont will be part of the Ch7 Grand Final coverage.
I wonder if he'll get into media after his playing career. If he wants it, it's his.

It has been a while since we've had a former WB legend enter the media. Johnno, Darcy and Brown are the three currently in the media that I can think of but they all retired 15+ years ago.

Blackburn will too. She already guest commentates and is very good at it.

I love the bloke but I don't think he's the media type.

It would be mutual - he wouldn't love the constant exposure (unlike certain people who I don't need to name) and I don't think he's quite the type they'd be looking for.

Besides he'll be too busy curing cancer, ending the wars and fixing the climate crisis in his retirement.
Oh and pouring coffee at Arthur's too.

That’s my gut feel too, not sure he’d relish being in the media. Anyway we need someone as biased as most of the other ex players are towards their old team and that ain’t Bont. It’s certainly not with Johnno either.

Surely Bont gets into coaching and leads us to a three peat dynasty.

I live in Brisbane but come from the west. One Saturday morning I'm sitting in a Brisbane traffic jam and my Doggies suppoorting mate from WeFo rings, so a quick chat and then he says 'A mate of mine is here, a fellow Dog's supporter. Have chat.'
So I get chatting to this unnamed person and not verbatim, the coversation went somethig like this
I asked, 'G'day, who's this?'
'Oh I know your mate and you know me'
Ok ... the voice sounds familiar but I can't put a name to it. How do I know you?
I spent a bit of time in Footscray. I had a bit of real estate there and I was a bit famous
Where abouts in Footscray?
Oh, I had a wing there
(oh ****) It's Dougie
(Lauging) Yeah mate
So we had a bit of chat and then he handed me back to my mate who'd run into Doug at a building site near the Tottenham station.
My heathen, non-AFL supporting passengers couldn't understand why I was so excited after talking to a bloke called Doug, in a traffic jam, in inner city Brisbane.
