To be honest I think with Rowell one needs to realise that up close the umps have a better appreciation of coalface players as compared to outside mids that the media love

I think this is a fair point. The surprise winners have mostly been inside mids - Priddis and Wines for example.

When youre 6 ft away from the contest and see the way those guys hit the ball and get it out you can see why they might think "How tf do they do it" and be inclined to give weight to those moments as opposed to the outside stuff.

He probably has. Also gets votes when he doesnt deserve them. The umpires have no clue.

He did finish runner up in the coaches votes tbf to him, so it isnt like he's come from nowhere. He was a real chance at winning that going into the final rounds.

It seems the umpires gave him 3 votes in games where the coaches maybe gave Anderson the more votes. Just flipped scenario so Rowell is up. It just seems more dramatic because no one in the media talked him up, just Anderson, so it feels like a surprise. But the corresponding award has him there or thereabouts so we probably shouldn't be.
