The proposed changes will make it harder for a Top 6 team to match the bid within Top 6 picks - while it would be nice to think we are going to finish Top 6 next season we probably won’t worry about getting in an extra pick for matching Walker until trade period next season. As things stand our future first second and third would be enough for Walker. We also have 2027 and 2028 picks we can use next season.

I'm guessing you didn't read the part about only being able to use 2 picks to match a bid?

Probably the worst administration of any “successful” league or sporting competition in the world. There are several reasons for this, but a major one is the parochialism, and the fact that Aussie Rules has a captive audience limited to Australia. If the competition had international exposure, there’s no way the administration could get away with being this incompetent.
I’m not prone to hyperbole but this is about right. Having had some exposure to the business side of the AFL it’s embarrassing how poorly it’s run. They rely on the public’s obsession, and the rivers of cash from TV to survive, neither of which they’ve done anything substantial to secure or grow. I suspect Gill, Swann etc wouldn’t survive in corporate Australia proper.

FWIW, I agree with the intent of these changes, it’s changing shit on the fly I can’t stand.

Correct, we’ll likely need to involve all three in some capacity.

Are you ok?
That is complete & utter bollocks, and that applies to any F/S or Academy pick. Such an unnecessary move by the AFL.

Hope STK gets taken to the cleaners some time soon trying to secure one of their own.

So Cody essentially costs us 3 first round picks LLLOOOOLLLL
I think we should hold our horses on this. All we know is the AFL aren’t doing a FS draft lockout and then the media have added their bit to it. Let’s wait and see what the actual cost will be before freaking out.

New matching system requires a new thought process.

Father son or not, if he goes pick 4 or higher the value simply isn’t there to justify picking him.

Given we already have to endure seeing two Silvagni generations at St Kilda, I’m not going to be too phased by Andrew Walker’s son playing elsewhere.

If the price is right, I’d love him. Otherwise hard pass.

If he’s as good of a player as he sounds, why not draft him. We paid a premium for Jagga and we will pay a premium for Cody. Unfortunately, that’s the new price of doing business.

Yes we will pay a price for Cody. However it will rely on other teams to do business with us. And we know some teams dont get along and will be vindictive. And even if team on top of us dont want him, they will bid anyway as we have committed to eachother.

Its corrupt this way.

So this will be interesting. Richmond should finish below us and they will surely bid on him. And as if a team will give us a top 4 pick if they have their eye on someone.

So confusing. Like why now? So unfair.

So if he goes at pick 5 that's ok but pick 4 is too much?

Interesting take, I'd probably be inclined to leave it to the recruiting team to assess his value, but that's just me.

Like why now? So unfair.

The sheer volume of academy picks being taken in the 1st round is why. The draft has been cooked for sometime. It’s overdue to be fixed, and I’m fully supportive of the changes even though that will negatively impact us.

But the reason it’s happening next year, and not this year, is so the AFL can give the Gold Coast another injection of talent that guarantees they stay at the top end of the ladder for the next decade. The AFL has a vested interest in the success of the Gold Coast. Having them play finals every year will go a long way to growing the sport in Queensland.

Part of the reason the academies exist is to equalise for father sons, given the new teams don’t yet have a pipeline of second generation talent coming through. I think this still makes sense, but I can’t imagine this is a long-term answer. For now , the AFL had to change the rules for both Academy and Father son otherwise Dimma would lose his shit.

The other reality is that the AFL doesn’t care about screwing over Carlton. We are a profitable club in our own right, and we generate massive revenue no matter where we are on the ladder.

Nah, I’m an armchair expert.

When you look at the points scale, you will see there is a massive tax on the first couple of draft picks.

Want to match pick one? You will need picks two and 12.

But pick five? Only two end of first round picks are required.

No, you can’t just bring in changes to an immediate draft (I.e. last years intention) when picks / trades have been exchanged. **by all thoughtful means bar that of the AFL executive’s!

+ there are already changes in place for this years draft that have tightened up the DVI & discount. Yes, rule changes implemented only last year….

Greg had no problem with the system when he was at the Lions...

They have reaped the rewards both from F/S as well as NGA picks...

So makes sense to make things a lot more fair.

Just sucks that it's happening when we set to benefit from it, plus the only 2 picks to match is dumb.

I like grading based on ladder finish position, that makes sense.

I reckon that they should make it so that you have to supply a pick in the corresponding round of the bid, then you can use 2 picks from the next round.

If a player is bid on at pick 1 and you're the premiers... then #18 + two 2nd rounders won't cut it... make strong teams give something up in that sense.

But if you're bottom 4 and someone is bid on at #1, you get the full discount plus you can use your 1st pick and a couple 2nd rounders and that should cover it.. Having to need pick #5 + #11 is too much.

Let's see how it plays out...

If the AFL want to make the FS system fair, just make it 1 game instead of 100 games. Give every club a son’s father played for an equal chance of being nominated by the son.
