Imagine thinking Supercoach is the measure of a gun player. Hugh McCluggage and Gawn robbed of the award and it's a travesty that Lachie Ash only got 7 votes
Just checking, was that in reply to my post above? if it was, you have got Supercoach mixed up with the actual coaches votes which are in reality a far better measure of who was best on ground etc than the brownlow. If I have jumped the shark on your comment, apologies and carry on...

All the AFL Clubs use the data .....it's the primary reason Champion Data was created ....the Fantasy games were simply that same data being used

And yes, SC does accurately measure players performances accurately, their impact on games, Qtr by Qtr .....otherwise, why would the AFL spend so many $$$ on the data collection

You don't think Coaches votes carry any bias ?

Coaches realistically couldn't give two hoots about the award ....so it has been theorised, coaches use their votes for a variety of nefarious purposes

They might but having looked at coaches votes for the crows games, I think they have reflected what we the supporters have seen. I can;t say the same for the umpires so i'd be happier with the coaches votes being the ones we rely on.

Would you think a system whereby we use a combination of votes .....the two Clubs Coaches and one senior match officiating umpire's votes ...would that bring more balance ?

How does it work now with 4 umpires .....do they get together and as a group decide on their 3,2,1 votes ....I don't watch the Brownlow anymore, so I'm not up with it

Nah I made the rookie error of unignoring Wayne briefly

I think there has to be a better way than it is now and maybe as you say a combination of coaches and umpires votes could work?

We do need another voting system.

Do we really care if umpires are good at spotting the best players in a game? Is it a necessary skill? I’d much prefer they focus only on each play and making the best call.

It shouldn’t matter if it’s Rowell or Daicos or Murphy or Shoenberg at a contest. The umpires should be unbiased and make the call based on the situation..

Asking them to do that, but then also asking ‘so who was your favourite today?’ is counterintuitive.

No wonder certain superstars get looked after when the umpires are told they need to identify who the best players are.

What a farce.

The question is, how do you define "the best player"? Is it the guy who hold Daicos to 15 touches? The guy who kicks 6 goals? The defender who holds his opponent scoreless? How do you weight each of those scenarios?

Stats only tell part of the story. You dont get any numbers for a hard tag. There has to be an observation by a human with a clue. Then there's bias and media influence. How to get an accurate outcome with minimal subjectivity?

I dont mind the umpires continuing to do it, but maybe there needs to be a football person in the room when they are doing their votes. A bloke who can put the game into context for them?

"Lets give NAS 2 votes"

"Really? Are you sure? The guy literally won the game off his own boot"?

"Yeah fair call, let's give him 3"

Problem solved.

So according to 7 graphics and staff

1. Daniel Curtain was rising star runner up
2. Bont is a Crows player
3. Danger won the 2020 and 2023 Brownlows
4. Bailey Smith has never played a GF
5. Everyone wants Geelong to win

Anything else?

Special mention to Goyder for leading off the congratulations to Rowell speech with a thanks to Nick Daicos.

What a terrible standard.

What about this for a voting scheme? A roster where two opposition coaches (in theory therefore unbiased) are assigned to each independently give 3-2-1 to the best three on the ground. There would be twice as many votes, but that would be fine.

Preferably the two coaches assigned would be the coaches who are playing next against each of the two teams in the game in question.

For example, Brisbane vs Adelaide would be assigned to Clarkson and Kingsley if the following week Brisbane play North and Adelaide play GWS. Those two coaches would be thoroughly invested in who tore that game apart.

Clarko would give votes to Murphy

Why should Clarko telegraph who he thought the best players were?

So the 4 umpires get together at the end of the game.

They all chant "Daicos, Daicos, Daicos" for a while, then write his name down.

Later in the week, the work experience kid who is doing the data entry for the voting gets a visual basic error from one of the macros in the excel 2003 spreadsheet that is being used to keep the tally.

IT are then called in, and after reviewing the situation they figure out why, and end up calling up the umpiring association to point out that Collingwood weren't one of the teams they umpired, and that the spreadsheet won't let them enter that name.

Votes are then distributed by whichever players the work experience kid and IT guy have heard of before, likely heavily influenced by whatever media they have recently seen.
