Can we put this in the appropriate thread. Spamming this thread when there is a perfectly reasonable Round 1 thread is gross
Bit sensitive about what goes where, isn’t it?

Sure, part of the post touches on Round 1 make-up, but the bulk of it is about list structure (which fits here), two trades (which fits here), positional list management (which fits here), and game management (which also fits here)

Their new president categorically stated Merrett will be at the club next year. Sounded strong, but not sure how that helps.
Going to get interesting if Merrett really doesn't want to be there.

Player Manager v President

Hes a property developer.... they lie all the time haha.
What was he going to say ....yes, we'll trade Merrett ...and weaken the value of any trade picks for him

It's the AFL ....lying is the 2nd language, but they're lousy at it .....player Managers are light years ahead of these Clubs, and play the Clubs like a fiddle

They have the benefit of holding literally all the power considering teams cant trade players without consent.

I heard a podcast where someone suggested contracts in the top 30 or so percent of earnings in the league removes the requirement of consent in trades, to balance the players/club power better. Also stops all the best players from going to the top 4 or 5 teams at will, and almost regardless of their current contract status. Making the league more even.

Im not sure its fully thought out yet, but it would finally address the lack of control Clubs have on player movement.

Make it a salary. If you earn above $650k pa you can be traded whilst in contract. Players can then decide to take less money for security. But if they want to get paid like an elite sports person than you need to start acting like it.

I don’t get the restraint of trade talks everyone brings up (because of a case in the 80s in Rugby). If a fresh kid standing to earn $100k can be sent anywhere in the country, why not a 30 year old making 1.5 million?

That's probably a better system, makes the cutoff clearer then the murkiness of a percentage of the league salaries.

I think its clear to everyone the players have way too much power, it made sense when trades were rare, and salaries didn't align with uprooting your life for football. But those days are long gone now.

Roo saying on radio no he is staying. Seems to be contracted and we are holding him to contract (even if he is wanting out) is my take on things,

As for the other playing Burgess who apparently is contracted, I reckon we are going to pay him out and keep Berg instead
Apparently, we're not to believe what Roo said on radio .....do people honestly believe he would outright lie .....nah

Yes, some people in this world are very gullible ….. hang off words that suit their narrative…. then dismiss as club lies & deception, words that don’t fit the narrative
Double 🤔

Is he under contract still?. There is your answer if the top dog has called him staying. Bad luck to the player but he signed the contract
Sorry to say that's not the answer. Does Essendon want to recruit anyone in the next couple of years? The player manager holds the cards, not the president

The list build is in some ways is at the most difficult part. The early years of going for youth is easy.

Trying to improve the team while not over paying and maintaining some draft picks is the real challenge.

The biggest trap we can fall into is trading too much draft capital for 'b and c graders' on lengthy contracts. Whoever comes in still has to have good football in them.

Carlton, Port and to some extent Melbourne (after their flag) got it wrong.

One of either ours or GWS’ thirds should do it tbh
ld love him for a second/third.
Problem being he’s only 20 so he might feel like he should be sticking around longer at Geelong.
Geelong will need capital for trading and are adding Worpel so would be sense to trade him out though.

If they’re adding Worpel he goes further down the pecking order, and we need someone of his type on the list

Makes sense for it to happen

It looks like we're going for a Crouch replacement.
Except he's way taller (189cm), heavier build (around 95 - 100kg and has a bazooka boot, also more versatile very good half backer as an underager when he was at the GWV Rebels before moving to the midfield in his top age year.
Did his ACL as an underager when he was thought to be a prospective 1st round chance. Not quick though but extremely hard to move off the ball.

Would you go for him?
