I'm going to this game with my youngest daughter who has an old school teammate who plays for Lions.

Brighton Homes Arena can be tough when the wind gets up but the conditions this Sunday look perfect for footy. Sunny and 29 degrees with lightish winds should make for a fast game.

Hopefully the Tiger girls have been acclimating in preparation for the hotter conditions, they'll be a few blowing up late you'd think.

If the Lions men win the Granny Saturday we might have to make an early exit before the hordes of Lions fans turn up to see them with the cup. Although I've been a past Lions member with my work, as well a lifetime Tiges, its not a particularly appealing scenario, as for some reason they're mostly not overly fond towards the Yellow & Black.

Our surprising 2 - 1 AFLW record against Brisbane wouldn't help.

Have to be on Brisbane this week. Have never liked Cats and they haven't liked me much neither.

Brisbane v Richmond at Brighton Homes Arena, 3.05pm AEST

Last time they met:
Richmond 6.4 (40) d Brisbane 5.4 (34), R1 2023

Brisbane is yet to win consecutive games this year, while Richmond is yet to win, full stop. For both clubs, this is a crucial game to kickstart the back half of the season. The clubs' trend of best and worst quarters has followed a similar pattern, with both poorest in second terms, and peaking toward the end of games. Those highs and lows are, however, on very different scales. Richmond is yet to win a second quarter and has conceded almost 100 points in the term alone, making the margin a particularly tricky one to peg back in second halves.

The Tigers are ill-disciplined, and make poor decisions on-field, which has exacerbated their dysfunctional attacking line. Generally, Richmond needs a quarter or half-time break to reset and establish adjustments to the game state, instead reverting to long kicks to aerial contests. For this reason, the Lions need to be prepared to compete well in the air, and maintain a disciplined structure behind the play to take away any of the Tigers' weapons. Similarly to Adelaide, Brisbane will be focused on notching up a win for Ally Anderson's historic 100th game, also the club's 100th in the AFLW.

Tip: It will be the first back-to-back wins of the Lions' season. Brisbane by 22 points.

Hoping we can continue our status as their bogey side, but given our regression it's not looking likely. I'd like Lynch to put Davidson on her ass in the first 2 mins and will take that as a win.

Fun fact. Dakota was a mad Tiger fan. That deserves some credits.

Playing normally, doubt we will get within 36 points, sadly. That's only a 9pt differential for each term.

Definitely need something to fire for us, maybe with better conditions we're cleaner. I won't rule out a W for us but maybe we just need to play Aoibhin Cleary as we could do with a bit of the luck of the Irish I think ☘️

Hicks under a cloud so lets assume she misses this week.

What they'll probably go with: (Extended Bench):

In:
Yassir, Brazzale, Wicksteed, Beatty,

Out: Hicks

What I'd like to see:
  • Cleary and Knoll somewhere in the "ins" and given good chunk of minutes. Test them out for gods sake.
  • If Wicksteed is in lets put her in the action and again give her a good chuck of minutes. Not sure we've managed Charli well.
  • Played Greiser as back up ruck last week and instead of resting forward when she wasn't rucking she spend a heap of time on the bench. Why? Caitlin was recruited as a forward and we need goals badly. If she can't impact there I'm not sure what her value is. Pretty much anyone can play 2nd ruck in AFLW especially against Saints who didn't have any rucks of note. This also diminished Poppy Kelly who shouldered the bulk of the ruck last year and was superb. Poppy is a big strong girl. She's up for it.

What I'd like to see:
Agree with the rucking backup, we'll make do without Greiser while Poppy's off.

Ally Anderson is the player we need to try and stop winning the ball, do that, and presuming both teams get good looks inside 50, all we have to do is turn around our forward efficiency to post a winning score.

Cleary might give us something on the wing as we need some run and carry and Knoll would be our target up forward.

I'm not sure how we fix our problems around goal as our forwards, Brennan, Greiser, Yassir are all down and need to find some form to get some reward for the team efforts. We don't have recognised goal kickers waiting in the wings so has to really come from those three.

Shots on goal Greiser is our best but she's not good for a goal per game this year, and looks the furthest off it. Scott, Conti, Ford and Greives have all had more shots on goal than Brennan, and Yassir is ranked 192 in the comp with only the 3 for the season. Fixing up the forward line is harder than it sounds and targeting Brennan or Greiser as tall targets I50 has not been the avenue to goal it once was. If things don't change up forward we're going to have to go to a different strategy and set up asap.

Grieves to on ball, she currently ranks 4th behind Conti, Egan and Mackenzie for contested possessions, not bad for a first year player, and Beruldsen shouldn't play on ball as is a liability, ranks 288th in the comp for CP, and the only thing she did well last week was tackle. Tackling is another problem for us as we seem to fall off too many, we seem to get to the tackle so are pressuring well but we might have to invite the NRL girls to come down to punt road and train our players on how to tackle.

Key to winning in my mind is to turn it into an ugly low scoring game of rugby. Pressure meter has to be off the charts. Worked for us in the past. I can't see us doing it any other way. 4 or 5 goals to 2 or 3.

Agree with all of that - it's not hard to structure up the Ruck to cope with that. Greiser can come up the ground and ruck when we do force a stoppage up to and just outside the F50. It's a workload, but frankly she needs it. In the past it's got her into some games after that. Kelly up to rucking the rest with the occasional chop out by Seymour. It's also why we have runners to help keep the order.

Last season Wicksteed had acknowledged stamina problems - that has to be better now surely?! Not solved, but better. Let's see it work better Ferg!

Round 7 and we still haven't seen Clearly. I know there are transition issues, but we have nothing to lose to see what she retained so far - do it from the bench at least. She may just give something unexpected, she's a star of her country's competition after all.

Brighton Homes Arena hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Lions this season

Round 1
Lions 3.11.29
Hawks 4.9.33

Round 3
Lions 6.8.44
Blues 9.4.58

Round 5
Lions 5.6.36
North 10.5.65
Could be the size?! That said, it's not like it is our 1 Wood either

I'd give first shot to Izzy Bacon. Probably can't go with her all game, but in pivotal moments, look to Izzy. Has a good defensive midset, and can spin it quickly.

Field dimensions: 161M x 128M

We've won up there before. Its similar to where we played last week.

Punt Rd - 159 x 124
Ikon - 157 x 136
RSEA - 159 x 128

Just came into my head. Sophie Conway. She's the Dayne Zorko of their team.

Issy has the running ability but I think Ally will be too clever and experienced but I can't think of anyone else.

The only aclimitazing they will do is on their laughter after another loss:(

1:54am?

Come on man. You know nothing good happens after 12.

Seriously though I wonder if Coxy has come in for the Dakota Davidson match up.
