I tend to agree with that, but I think this St Kilda situation is unique. They’ve signed Nas for 2 years and now are in a spending spree to try and compete in those years. They’re signing players on very inflated contracts.

I think it’s human nature to not feel great about somebody worse than you getting paid more. Wilkie may be fine with it but he hasn’t said no to us yet so that seems unlikely.

It’s an entirely foreseeable outcome that a club could offer Wilkie a contract like this after the JSOS deal.

Watching Liam repeatedly out jump the opposition and spoil the ball over the last month in the VFL has had me constantly question what we were doing playing Busslinger in front of him at the pointy end of the season.

Thanks for a great career Liam.
I guess they had to get games into Buss to see what he’s capable of. I don’t understand how Gardy got a gig midseason though

I sort of agree.
When it’s the other way around (very often!) and a player is clearly not meeting performance levels commensurate with the size or duration of his contract you almost never see a player saying “I’m taking money on fraudulent pretences. Here, take some back.” (A salute to Tom Boyd here but different circumstances.) So that could be used as the yardstick for Wilkie too.

However, if the club is really committed to keeping the player you simply have to recognise you need to top up. Even if it’s only going part of the way to matching the competing offers. It’s party about money and partly about feeling valued. Gestures are important.
Daisy Thomas did this at Carlton I Believe

With Wilkie, I think we need to move on reasonably quickly and put a timeline on it. I'd give him until the end of the month to make a decision which means he's had a good 2-3 weeks to think about it already.

We can't be waiting through trade period only for him to get a better offer from the Saints and back out. With Jones & Buku gone, it's clear we need to bring in another KPD (Butts etc.) and we can't miss out because we were waiting on the unlikely outcome.

Yep. Deal is off end of next week. Move to Butts. Can’t lose Butts to North.

We can work on two deals on that same time. I don’t think this should be a concern.

I agree in theory but disagree somewhat in the execution. A decision from Wilkie is in some ways the easy part - actually getting the deal done is the hard part, and regardless of how open the Saints end up being, that's 100% going until the final minutes of trade period.

The only way to deal with this situation imo is to be perfectly happy ending up with both Wilkie and Butts/other. Push hard for Butts (heh) and then do everything to get Wilkie done. Threatening to pull the deal off the table for our #1 target, just so we can then revert to a backup, is a terrible strategy because what if he says yes? We've then still got weeks of posturing that could feasibly end in us still not getting him.

We have to be prepared to get both, and give Wilkie all the time to consider it he needs.

Gettable~

Dogs the favourite to land Budarick.

Will Darcy will go pick 30-50.

Dogs are growing more optimistic to land Wilkie the longer it goes on.

Dogs will try to get Gold Coast’s pick 6 either to satisfy a Wilkie trade or draft.
Apparently Saints haven't revised Wilkie's contract which would end this in a heart beat. Maybe the war chest is used up?

Even though he crashed and burned i'm not completely upset with Gardner getting an AFL game mid season.

He was absolutely destroying it in the VFL and it sets a good example to the up and coming group that if you show good form in the VFL you will be rewarded. Good selection integrity in my book.

Also as much as people want to shit on him he was by far the best KPD in the VFL this year as evidenced by his selection in the VFL TOTY.

Wow saints really aren’t showing Wilkie any love

Imagine how he must feel.

'Look you've been loyal for so long, an AA and talked about as our next captain, but next year and for the next few years we're paying a bunch more to the injury prone son of our list manager who isn't fit to tie your bootlaces. Oh about paying you what you deserve, well, we'll think about it, maybe.'

I don't know if its been posted anywhere but congratulations to Taylor Duryea, he is joining Luke Bruest at the Tigers as developement coaches.

If what i am hearing is to be believed which i think it is and i have certainly been hearing it for weeks, Butters is close to making a request for a trade to dogs. Its not a surprise though, as i think its growing like wild fire.
Dogs want to bring Wilkie and Butters both in this trade period. I'd say Wilkie is more a long shot though.

Haven't heard anything regarding Butts.

We're drawing a long bow with Wilkie. He's under contract at the Saints. He's not a politician, he doesn't have to come out and make a public proclamation about his future . Neither does the club. Its just gossip ATM, click bait.

I assumed Budarick was coming in as the Duryea replacement, small lock down defender, but I wonder if Bevo likes him as an upgrade on the McNeil role which he was playing through the second half of the year and through finals... Had only switched there mid-season with no pre-season learning it so theoretically may have a bit of scope for improvement there, or if we just want him to switch back to his more natural lockdown small defender role.
