Those blokes aren’t there though to save the coach from himself

So let Davis take the reigns and give him a senior assistant. That would be an upgrade for the same amount of money.
So only proven, successful coaches can hire quality personnel to support them?

New coaches have to surround themselves with inexperienced duds to prove they can do it solo?

This is elsewhere.

Having good, experienced people in your coaching group is not necessarily a weakness of the head coach.

Chris Scott brought in James Rahilly
Hawks have Brett Ratten
It seems like best practice. If you want the best out of a Head Coach, you have experienced people overseeing the overall department and overseeing each line.

Hawthorn is already talking about the potential of Ken. Goodwin heading to Sydney to support Cox. Collingwood headhunted Skipworth, who's considered the best assistant in the country.

I think we were clearly short-staffed last year, a bit like Sydney this year. It's good we addressed that

It's interesting that the folks who have been consistent about their negativity towards the club, it's management and coaching team now seem to be doubling down on possible reasons that they maybe weren't THAT wrong.

I think it's worth saying "I'm glad I was incorrect, it's nice to have positive things happening."

Nicks deserves to win Coach of the Year. Reid has done a great job. Balme and David have come in and been really positive additions.

It's all good.

Do you wonder what we’re going without? Were we spending the full cap and if so, we’d have had to drop about $300k of other roles to fit him in. Wonder whether we did that or more likely, we weren’t paying the full soft cap.

Nicks didn't "want" a senior assistant when he started

Which I think had more to do with finances and inept leadership on our part. How would a newbie know the best structure? He's not going to go into a job interview saying I need an experienced assistant please to win the job or then mid-Covid ask for a new hundreds of thousands of dollars position to be created.

Those decisions are why we have Fagan / Kelly / Ricciuto. A fail on their part.

It’s only interesting to you because you made it up

Yep
I think coming out of Covid in particular we were under resourced for cosmetic (financial bottom line) reasons

Do we know Nicks didn't want one?

If so - he was wrong.

I thought that was Scott Burns, but this structure seems far better for him.

I think Burns was seen as an in lieu of a senior assistant we'll have a experienced line coach option

I think I've seen enough examples of Nicks being stubborn to know he chose that for himself. Maybe the club couldn't afford a senior assistant in his first year when we were still paying Pyke out but I wouldn't give him any leeway beyond that. Now he's an experienced coach that is tarnished by 5 years of poor results and we're propping him up while the real talent is looking for a promotion elsewhere.

He’s gone missing after we went out
There was an opening to question if Davis is all he's cracked up to be. Instead he backs in proven loser coach Matthew Nicks. I don't understand these sort of people. These guys must be the ones eating the black jelly beans.

When your thought process is support everything the club does or who it employees, it makes their opinions worthless
