Schadenfreude, as we know, is taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune.
But what is the opposite?
It turns out that the percipient Germans do indeed have a word for it.
It's Gluckschmerz. It's the feeling of pain at another's good fortune.
Gluckschmerz is the feeling I will have tomorrow if Geelong win.
I'm not going to hide it. After the contemptuous way we were treated by Herr Schmidt I wish him no good fortune at all, even if it means I have to barrack for the Lions. I have no problem with Dunkley getting another premiership medallion. I wouldn't go so far as calling him a good bloke (ein guter Kerl) but I certainly wish him no ill.
And tomorrow I want to see Dunks grinning in triumph as he holds onto the premiership cup.
That's called freudenfreude BTW.
Would I also feel schadenfreude in respect of Herr Schmidt? No, not exactly. The less I see of him the better. A premiership will mean his physog will be in the media for days if not weeks. A GF loss will go some way toward removing him from the media's gaze. That will be satisfaction enough.

Geelong are +422 points (256 more than anyone else) in red time this year and +247 over the last 7 games. Now that Fagan and the Brisbane Bears are aware of this stat. Why wouldn't they control the last 5 minutes of every quarter to weaken that major part of their game plan ?Head say Cats, heart says Lions.

Qualifying final 58-21
Prelim final 56-2
Lions better bring their running boots Saturday.
Easier said than done. The cats have a lot of guys who can run and the lions are playing their fourth final in four weeks.Geelong are +422 points (256 more than anyone else) in red time this year and +247 over the last 7 games. Dunks copped a firework n the head yesterday…..well almostwith all the talk of choccie neale as sub and dunks being underdone i am sorry to say that geelong will likely win by 50+
as long as smith doesn't win the norm i will put up with it
Started drinking early ?
The last 4 grand finals I’ve bothered to watch were 2021 (in person…), 2018, 2017 and 2016. It’s so uninteresting these daysI'm ignoring the whole day, and any coverage. Roll on trade/draft periods.
Even living in Qld if the Lions win it’s fine….its the Broncos you have to worry aboutThere is no way I want the Cats to win. Live in Qld so go Brisbane.
We used to have a massive day, pies and beers and sweeps - now I just can’t be fooked.I'm ignoring the whole day, and any coverage. Roll on trade/draft periods.
I honestly don’t think I’ve seen one since 2021The last 4 grand finals I’ve bothered to watch were 2021 (in person…), 2018, 2017 and 2016. It’s so uninteresting these days
Similar situation but family up from Melbourne. None of us with a dog (or a tiger) in the fight but we’ll all be watching. We have friends visiting from the coast this afternoon for a catch-up at Floriade in Canberra. She’s from country NSW and her Husband is a recently relocated Pom. So no AFL interest from them! You know what, I’m not the slightest bit bothered that I’m missing the grannie. Hoping for Lions by 1 point in controversial circumstances.
