Tony Jones just said on Ch9 4pm News that they're expecting a huge crowd at the MCG even though there is no Victorian club in the Grand Final. I know that I'm just a visitor in your country, but I thought that Geelong was a bustling metropolis in this state. Well, "bustling" might be a tad exaggerated.

Schadenfreude, as we know, is taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune.
But what is the opposite?
It turns out that the percipient Germans do indeed have a word for it.

It's Gluckschmerz. It's the feeling of pain at another's good fortune.

Gluckschmerz is the feeling I will have tomorrow if Geelong win.
I'm not going to hide it. After the contemptuous way we were treated by Herr Schmidt I wish him no good fortune at all, even if it means I have to barrack for the Lions. I have no problem with Dunkley getting another premiership medallion. I wouldn't go so far as calling him a good bloke (ein guter Kerl) but I certainly wish him no ill.

And tomorrow I want to see Dunks grinning in triumph as he holds onto the premiership cup.
That's called freudenfreude BTW.

Would I also feel schadenfreude in respect of Herr Schmidt? No, not exactly. The less I see of him the better. A premiership will mean his physog will be in the media for days if not weeks. A GF loss will go some way toward removing him from the media's gaze. That will be satisfaction enough.

The last 4 grand finals I’ve bothered to watch were 2021 (in person…), 2018, 2017 and 2016. It’s so uninteresting these days

We used to have a massive day, pies and beers and sweeps - now I just can’t be fooked.

The afl has done so much damage to the brand and just like hot cross buns on Boxing Day there is nothing to look forward to anymore.

Obviously if the Dogs were in it would be different, but even 21 didn’t have the same excitement as 16

You know what, I’m not the slightest bit bothered that I’m missing the grannie. Hoping for Lions by 1 point in controversial circumstances.
