Free Agency makes it impossible for the smaller clubs to compete. The strong teams add talent from the bottom teams to always stay up the top.
We have lost two top tier players for p1ss poor compensation, magic beans which even if they make it require 3 too 4 years development to get close to what you had.

Let's not forget how much of a basket case they were from essentially 2005-2018. People want to go to contenders, if we were consistently winning we'd have people flying through the doors as well. We've wasted the opportunities the last few years but it's not too late to change things around with Bont still in his peak and Darcy about to be phenomenal

Geelong are incredibly well coached but they don’t have the talent across the ground. Their inside mid/contest work is workmanlike at best and good teams should expose them.

If we had half the focus on defensive structures and approach that Geelong has we’d never lose to them because our midfield is better and we have more elite talent. But they have a better coach and footy department.

Brisbane, Hawthorn (if they can improve their midfield), Gold Coast and Freo (if they get a better coach) are the threats over the next 3-5 years imo.

was running around in our VFL side about 10 years ago and didn't show any AFL standard qualities. Then a couple of years with Central Districts in SA. Recruited by Geelong in 2018 where he played 8 games in 2 seasons. Picked up by the Lions as a back up ruck at the end of 2021 and has now played in 2 winning Grand Finals. Might not even get a game next year with Draper moving to Brisbane. Pretty amazing story of success and being in the right place at the right time.

There's certainly a solid argument that Geelong have massively over-achieved with the list that it has. For a few years, they had talent all over the park. But for the last few, you look at their list on paper and their success has been genuinely head scratching. they have a good coach who totally owns bevo, and one of the best home ground advantages where they regularly play interstate sides and smaller melbourne teams because there is no room to accomodate a larger Melbourne team.
