This is not really logical.

What if we believe X Taylor is our best option with #4. But we know he's a safe bet to get to #8. Are you saying we should not trade #4 for #8 and let's say a future 2nd, just because on 'paper' it's a poor trade?

So would you take Taylor at #4 and not get him at #8 plus get the extra pick, just because it's not an 'outrageously' good deal?

Makes no sense.
Who has the picks between 4 & 8 may dictate if you do it or not.

If things go as some expect, Essendon will have 5, 6, 7(Draper Compo) & 8 (Hawks pick from Merrett trade). Not sure I'd be comfortable trading with them

This is the issue with trading down imo.

Sure I’d love to do it, but most trade ups to top 5 involve clubs who need points/have so many 1st rounders each year (gws/gc etc) Cadman, Taranto, Sanders etc… or wce being special JHF/Ginbey/Baker or are a player plus trade like Griffen.

Sounds like bombers are digging in their heads re Merrett.

Draper will be interesting, reckon they get band 2 but I thought that about battle last year (which given the saints spending spree should have happened).

I'm on board with Robey, I wouldn't be upset if we took him with pick 4....or if we split it with one of the picks.

Apart from Grlj are those players listed really going to be there @ 7/8?

Your taking an unnecessary risk.
it is a con for fools

keep 3 and 4 and play the long game if we want premierships and not prepared to shoot ourselves in the foot again

just on picks 3 and 4.

Will Ashcroft won two Norm Smiths in his first three years??

Norm Smith to me is a higher rated individual award than the Brownlow and it affects premiership victories.

Picks 3 and 4 may or may not be Ashcroft standard but latter picks certainly will not be so if we want impact short and long term, keeping picks 3 and 4 seems the way to go, especially in GF's and to win premierships

And then Taylor goes at 7 and we look like dumb campaigners lol

You don't trade down for 1 player.
Have you not been watching the last dozen drafts where Cal Twomey knows the top-10 almost exactly every single year - you think the clubs don’t know this also? A few years ago we traded down twice and accumulated picks, and still got our man McCauliffe.

Anyway …. I’m not a fan of taking Taylor at #4 if we can get an extra pick by sliding.

His draft goes off order when a team live trades. That's all it would take.

The McAuliffe one we liked a number of players equally, one being Clay Hall who went at a pick we traded.

If we rate a few equally it makes sense if someone wants a specific player and willing to trade. If we are hellbent on one player it would be silly to not just take them.

WC suddenly feel a real threat to take Robey and its farked.

Is it really though?

Adding Sharp & Cumming completes the midfield nicely.

Although I'm still on Grjl & Cumming

I actually think Sharp and Cumming starts to complete our midfield, but we have start somewhere

our depth in the midfield is no where near some teams, but that is okay, it goes in cycles

we have time on our side and no team can win year after year forever with the draft and other equalisation measures chipping away

Nope, not at all what I’m saying. If we want X Taylor, there’s absolutely no guarantee he’s a safe bet and we would get him at 8, but there is if we use 4. You think other teams are going to tell us who they’re drafting? Ridiculous to think that! Swans thought Faull would be there for them last draft and how did that work out? Lucky they didn’t trade for the pick after ours that we took him.
Pick 4 guarantees 100% that we get the two players we rate highest at those picks. Why the hell would you risk getting a lesser player by assuming other teams won’t select one of those players?

Lachie Neale pick 58! Some thought he was BOG last year and some BOG second half today.
All depends on how the recruiting staff rate the talent. They may prefer a higher potential player but high risk, or move into next year if it's a stronger draft etc. There’s several strong reasons to split/trade our draft picks...or stick with current picks. But I'll back the research of the professionals over fixed views.

Lalor and Hotton will spend time in the midfield but yeah needs more strengthening

They are forward/midfielders.

We need genuine dynamic midfielders. Cumming is a midfield/forward. But 80/20 split. A perfect alternate to Lalor. One two punch.

Anyway, we have to get at least two A grade mids from this draft and I would look at trading a Jayden Short for another good midfield option.
