As I said. It was a bad decision. Blind Freddy can see it.
Clarke compounded the bad decision moreso then the Baker/Graham combo

We insanely overpaid in every way and he is going to do it again it seems with Starcevich

Ignoring weakness just leads to weakness continuing it feels.
Your opinions, not interested, moved on. Looking forward to this trade/draft period, I'm sure there'll be lots more fresh topics to debate.

3rd round pick or piss off Lions. Getting enough hand outs and free players as it is. Including our captain for no draft cost..

Agreed. We use any priority pick that must be traded on another player. Butler, Steele or Young. An actual player of need where we are lacking options.

Use it to find a ruck.

If we pony up a big contract and pay top dollar at the trade table for Starcevich the club needs to fold and Pyke pack his bags as that would be the exact opposite to what they have been saying. Every lever Don, EVERY lever.

And none of this, "we made a commitment". If he cant satisfy a medical including a concussion history assessment then thats bad luck all round for player and club.
I agree I was on board with the starce trade but after yesterday and another head knick its too much of a risk for the club

we need to move on and look for someone else

The problems dragging on into 2025 though? We have Hawks Pick 15 which drifts to more like 22 because of this trade

Balance mid is a N Anderson who has the power to go inside and the class on the outside to make things happen.
HR is a balanced mid with his skill set, Hewett is a balanced mid.

Duursma is the taller version of Fletcher but his strengths are his outside transition, he may be a rotation mid in time but the only reason I don't take Duursma is he is not the biggest immediate need.

Happy to take him but he would usually be a player you take in the second half of the 1st round.
That's why I don't want to spend a top 2 pick on him and would be more than happy to leave him for overs to achieve the other players of need in this years draft.
I don’t know how many times this needs to be said and this applies for every sport in the world… when you have pick 1 - you draft the best player available, not what you need the most but even then, Duursma is what we need the most, a potential superstar transition midfielder with freakish aerial ability who can hit the scoreboard and rotate across any area of the ground.

You're looking at what he is now, not what he could be.

Fyfe was a skinny HFF when drafted.

Bontempelli was a mid/hbf, who was considered a predominantly outside player and had questions about his ability to do it on the inside.

Duursma is similar. Great athletic profile but a bit skinny. Can play in all 3 areas of the ground and had no trouble finding the ball.

He's also not afraid of trying to win the hardball in packs, despite what some people seem to think. He'll go hard when it's his turn.

Recruiters won't be looking at where he plays in his draft year but where he could play in the AFL.

Once he puts on size, he'll be hard to contain, IMO.

You both make very good points. Duursma is a bit like Hugh McCluggage for mine. Looks to be very talented, will likely start as an outside mid or defender, but will likely take a long time to transition inside.

Can it be done? Sure. Should we go there this year? I don't know. I suppose the saving grace of picking him up this year is that we're going to have another top 5 pick next year, another top 5/10 in 2027, and possibly another top 10 in 2028.

We've been going after him for 2 years now.

And over those two years he now has had 4 concussions.

This year a long lay off to recover, came back, played a handful of good games and got subbed out again concussed.

Its a sh!t sandwich situation all round.

Already spent the last several years with our best players sitting on the sidelines on top dollar being unable to get on the field. How will this be any different?

We have continued to up our offer financially to get him across also. At some point the financial offer becomes unreasonable and not worth it

6 years 900k per year reported is absolutely insane.

It's not debatable, yet you seem to be debating it? As I said, debatable for eternity? Coulda, shoulda, woulda...it's long time done+dusted, time to move on. Btw Baker turned out pretty well in the end, Graham not bad either. But knock yourself out over it.
People are still debating how much we over paid for Kelly and this was worse .

Not that pick 14 was massive overs( still overs) for Baker just that we dropped the ball from the first press conference and proceeded to cascade into a series of bad decisions that left us with a poor draft hand .

We cant afford to have a poor draft hand when we have such little high end talent .

What high end talent did we miss out on by splitting last season?

Posters keep saying it but who did we miss?

If we had of taken Ried instead of Allan and he won the rising star award (which he likely wouldnt have with us) you would all be singing a totally different tune.

You take best available. You don’t draft for need with top picks. He’s clearly the best available in this draft class given his production already, athletic profile and upside. Just take him.

Jagga Smith. I would have taken him at #1.

Can’t see the issue with Duursma even if he doesn’t make it as a centre bounce mid.

We need someone of his ability in the backline anyway. Ginbey and McCarthy are the only ones that run and carry regularly. Duursma is a game breaking player. Take a look at what Fletcher did yesterday and that’s the sort of player I’d hope we’re getting at a minimum.

Compare Duursma to Hugh McCluggage than say you're not sure if we should draft him? Is he not the best player in top 10 where he was drafted? Absolute jet and don't think Brisbane are regretting drafting him

Your words, not mine. What I implied in my original post, is that I'm no longer interested in debating this time-worn and forensically dissected topic. Yet here we are. I've moved on, let it go, discuss it with someone else. Thank you.

I understand where the pro-Duursma people are coming from but we need actual midfielders more than potential midfielders. I do think the Fletcher comparison makes sense though in that Duursma will be someone you can plonk anywhere and he'll do well.

You can’t possibly compare McCluggage kicking and vision to Duursma’s. On ceiling then yep fair enough.
