Was reappointed but then a large amount of players where going to walk. Think you’ll find he was asked to step down.
Was there really that much unrest with players that Beaconsfield would make themselves look stupid by resigning there coach and then firing him 2 weeks later? Fair risk if they don't have a great replacement ready to replace.

When did the VAFA use it.Not a great fan of Box Hill,to big for me and you all know I like small grounds with a atmosphere, lol. but would be better then Ringwood.

VAFA use it most years, they like the VFL venues. They’ve probably used most VFL grounds at one point or another for finals.

But that’s the advantage they have in being flexible with their venues and not making their fixtures until the week of the game, they can use these grounds when they’re available.

Similar happened at Bayswater this season I believe, this players leaving mid season however they haven’t advertised the job yet so I assume maybe the committee held strong unless

There were rumours floating around mid season that a few senior players were not happy. Jake Aarts being one who wanted to return to Dromana but was after the transfer cut off date.

Since the Premier GF, I’ve been thinking about umpiring, so did a quick search on umpires pay rates. Most Leagues don’t list their pay scales unless you apply to umpire there, but I did find a few for comparison to the EFNL. To EFNL’s credit, they do give their pay scales.

All I am giving is the payment for a game in the highest Div in each League for comparison.

EFNL - $147 (no pay rise since 2022)

GFL - $180

SEFNL - $160 (2 umpires) or $155 (3 umpires)

Barwon $180 (2 or 3 umpires)

EDFL - $168

Bendigo - $180

WRFL - $146 (set in 2019, no further updates since then)

Adelaide Football League - $227

Perth Football League - $200

VFL - $349

Queensland Football League - $130

It looks like the EFNL needs to increase their rates to attract umpires.

I’d suggest they should actively try and recruit umpires, rather that advertising on the EFNL website or relying on word of mouth.

They should be sounding out Little Aths, the Knox and Nunawading Triathalon Clubs and Schools, for long distance runners who might be interested in being paid for training. I know of a girl who wanted paid work, but was worried that the time she spent working part time would eat into her training schedule (she was a state level runner, with ambitions). I suggested umpiring and told her she could get paid better for umpiring than working at Maccas or Coles and Woolies. She ended up boundary umpiring her first year, saw what field umpiring involved and eventually became a field umpire at junior levels and a boundary umpire at senior level. In her last year at school she was umpiring on both Saturdays and Sundays and was making around $200 for the weekend, all tax free. She told me that she would have had to work almost every day of the week at Maccas to earn the same and then try and fit in training. She is now in the US doing an Athletics Scholarship.

Some kids might drop out, but others may continue with umpiring, it’s worth a try

Good post.

I think the EFNL are happy because they actually have a lot of umpires and fill almost all slots.

But a lot of them are young and some certainly not up to the mark.

Personally I find the pay rates absurd. $300 absolute minimum for me. And should be more.

A lot of them are also well past it, are only umpiring to supplement their pension and umpire from the square. I don't know what the standard is like in Div 5, but Div 2, it's well below par.

Very true this. They have kids or much older umps but very little in the middle.

Games this year with multiple teenagers, its ok to have a teenager with an older umpire but to have what looks like two 15/16 year old umpiring senior football was less than ideal.

VAFA around about $190 or just under. The pay rate for the VAFAs 4th division is higher than EFLs premier umpires.

Probably explains the lack of quality in EFL umpires, as well as the fact it is extremely difficult for new umpires to break into the boys club at the top. Hence the Balwyn life member doing most Balwyn grand finals.

East Ringwood secured their main man, reads well!!

So east Ringwood
Heathmont
Fairpark
Montrose
Oakleigh districts

Up for grabs still
Mooroolbark
Beaconsfield
Surrey park
Warrandyte

Any tips on who gets what? And did I forget any? Surely bunk has all the answers

Haven't followed too closely, always hard to know as lots of clubs don't really put anything online. Didn't know Surrey were looking, has he stepped down? Had a big few years, that's a blow if so!

Interesting on the EFNL website that there is no article on Balwyn winning the Grand Final and that the Chandler Medal votes haven't been released?

I suggest that they do not have a FT Website person. Hence, the below-average Website. Plus, someone has to produce the pieces for the website person to update and upload.
