Why ? If there is a genuine concern that duursma will leave what is the point of putting 3 years into him ?

If we have essendon and carlton (via GC/curnow trade) both gunning for pick 1 we could come out very well on a player who we might not want to draft
It depends on what we are offered.

It tends to be fair (points) value if everyone knows there is a go home issue. But we can’t keep taking from the 2nd tier if that is a concern.

Duursma has the performance and ceiling mix that has separated him from the pack - maybe not HR levels of ceiling, but as clear a #1 pick in 2025 as HR was in his year. If we get a Nth style joke offer for #1 then take the player.

3 years is a long time, even longer when you talk about the developmental maturity of an 18yo male. I get the risk around 2 year contracts, but 3 years is actually a significant change that will help retention.

With the assistance package somewhat announced, planning is something that can occur now. Below is adding in our pick 2 and Carltons pick 9 to draft order. Id go with

WCE/Carlton - Chesser + pick 17 for Pick 11
WCE/Gold Coast - 11, 22, 23 and 33 (2926) for Gold Coast pick 7. 15 and future 3rd (2517)
WCE/St Kilda - Liam Ryan for ST Kilda F2nd
WCE/Brisbane - St Kilda F2nd for Starcevich

Then
2 NGA Spots - Koby Evans and Tylah Williams
2 DFA rookie spots - Tom Berry (yuck) and Jacob Blight (think Tylar Young says no to us)

Draft - Pick 1,2,7,15 and Charlie Banfield
Picks - Willem Duursma (1), Dyson Sharp (2), Sam Cumming (7), Jacob Farrow (15), Charlie Banfield (61)

Boom
That looks okay SGIO....I would be happy with that return

Slight clarification to this

Twomey said we would trade for Starcevich so we could keep the Allen FA compo without it being diluted

And the bit nobody will want to hear is that whilst he doesn’t think the end of R1 priority pick will have to be traded he did suggest it would be about the right value to trade for Starcevich - because in his mind that would be what Brisbane would receive via FA for him. Which is complete bollocks as they wouldn’t be getting anything since Allen and Draper are both coming in as Free Agents

We don’t get Starcevich for free but nor should we be handing over an end of R1 pick for him either. The Hawthorn R2 pick is what we should be offering

It drives me nuts everytime I hear it.
How can you be so involved in trades and football and not realise this.

1.He’s out of contract and we have #1 pick in psd.
2. We have the first two picks in the nd and Annabelle could possibly be bid on.
3. They could still match the pick and keep him if they wanted.
4. They’d get nothing for him if he nominated a different club
4. They’ve surely got a salary squeeze coming and need to give someone up to bring all these players across.
5. With concussion issues we could back out and save face by not offering overs for him.

I don’t see any reason why we should be offering an end of first.

Will jump head first into oncoming traffic if we go for Starcevich.

Concussion issues aside he is the wrong age bracket in a position we already have a glut of mature players for.

He also relies HEAVILY on his athleticism to defend and play the game, think the cliff will come sooner than most think for him.

You shouldn't.

Think about risk v reward.

What are we risking? A list spot and salary cap....which we aren't really.

If he needs to retire due to concussion the payout is outside the salary cap. The risk there is to the WAFC dividend being slashed as we can cover paying for it outside the cap.

So he comes in, gets retired and our cap isn't affected really. Just the bank account.

A lot of people say the Eagles are rich use their money. Taking risks such as this is one way we can use our balance sheet to improve.

Not sure if the WAFC would be happy though.

What are we risking? Assets at our disposal is what we are risking

Take the 6 years 900k and give it to Alex Davies. A player who isnt 1 head knock from retirement

My point that you keep missing is that we could have got Baker and gross without using pick 3 and had a much higher rated draftee .

I don't really rate allan and if he wasn't from WA neither would

Well good for you mate. You don’t rate Bo Allan.strong ,athletic, played in aWAFL premiership side. Hasn’t had a chance yet to show us the goodies..Yes our recruiting team must be shit coz we didn’t take M.Reid. So..
I assume you don’t rate the other 16 teams recruiters coz they didn’t take him.
But our same shit recruiters must be geniuses coz they grabbed Shanahan at 30.Mmmm?
Let the P3/Baker thing go , it’s done. It’s getting VERY boring.

I’ll call the ambulance

I'm okay with getting Starcevich but if we trade our end of R1 compo for him, honestly just sack Clarke and Pyke on the spot. I would have thought nobody could be that stupid but after last year i have no faith.
We probably only get it if we trade it for someone.

100%

No matrix measuring this trade comes out with end of 1st.

And even if the Lions got a 3rd rounder for Starcevich they are mile's ahead in the free agency ledger bringing in Allen and Draper for free.

Plus free access to land the best mid at a discount.

The good rappor with Brisbane may include Robertson for r3 pick

What a ridiculous call, Allan was rated a borderline top 10 prospect all year, made the U18 AA team, you think Twomey rating him at 12 was because he was from WA?

Drapers looked poor this year in the SANFL, have a read of the crows board and those that actually watch it.

Their team is crying out for a Draper style mid and he’s not even close to being fit for AFL level.

I don't watch enough of Brisbane to comment...

But exactly what role are they expecting Starcevich to play? He's a medium defender. His defensive, contested work is his strength. He's not a running rebounder, and he's not a key-position player. So he's basically competing against Hough and Ginbey... who are basically two of our brightest prospects. And potentially Bo Allan.

I'm just not understanding the role he would be expected to play.

For $900k, surely we can recruit someone who offers as more than "being better than Tom Cole".

It's not a 'could' of done better .

It's we 'should' have done better

Again. Shoulda....coulda.

It'd a lame argument based on nothing but emotion.

Especially when you don't know how the players in the draft will pan out.

In 5 or 10 years time you can have a good whinge and base that on facts.

Until then it's nothing more than an emotional whinge based on an opinion. Nothing more.

In reality Bo Allan does a Sheed and kicks the winning goal in a GF. Your argument falls over.

Just let it go - it’s all done and dusted and nothing will change it albeit a bad decision at the time - we just need to move on.
Cant wait for the draft so there will be something different for 12 months not to move on from

I've never said anything about Murphy Reid.

We wouldn't have picked Murphy Reid at 3 anyway .

I'm annoyed that we traded pick 3 and had to take what was left and what we were left with was the end of the 2nd tier of talent rather than the best talent like our finishing position dictated for what ?

Baker who we could have got with the hawks F1

I feel you are happy with how shit we have operated.

We should be giving ourselves the best chance every trade period to maximise players coming in , remuneration for players going out and maximising our draft hand .

We are not doing any of that

I said what i said. Not further explanation should be required.

Not drafting a player because you're scared they'll go home in 3 years is coward behaviour.
