Saints get reamed in this trade imo.
On the surface it isn’t great.

Barrass was traded for a F1, F2 and F3. I think Wilkie is worth more than TB and at least a first and two seconds, the Saints apparently value Flanders at pick 7, whilst 28 and 36 are both second round picks, but I’d suggest they’re a bit too far back.

If it was somehow Flanders and two picks in the early 20s (assuming the Saints do value Flanders that highly) I imagine that’d be close, but they need to be willing to deal and Wilkie needs to be willing to leave.

It’s a problem. I’ve always been of the view that, if you can’t lure a clear best 22 player who fills a need, hunt in the lower leagues rather than take a fringe player/DFA who another club has already worked out isn’t up to it.

There’s another Dale Morris/Liam Picken/Tory Dickson running around somewhere.

I dont mind a fringe oppo player who is being kept out thru lack of opportunity. I dont see the point in picking up a player who has been delisted or isnt getting a game because they lack talent.

Its hard to tell what will happen with VFL players - the change in environment could work wonders for them, but also the step up in intensity to AFL level is large.

My rule of thumb has been if you have to do it, take them from a top four side.

The overwhelming majority of fringe players who change clubs remain fringe players.

A handful have worked for us (Biggs and Hamling come to mind, and both came from contenders). Bramble has been ok (but as it turns out Hawthorn were a contender, and he’s someone most here think we need to upgrade).

I’ve posted this list before, but here’s a selection of fringe recruits we’ve had in recent times and it’s not great reading (some weren’t ever really fringe and didn’t work out):

Lukas Markovic

Pat Vezspremi

Nathan Djerrkurra

Justin Sherman

Ed Barlow

Mark Austin

Nick Lower

Koby Stevens

Tom Young

Sam Darley

Joel Hamling

Shane Biggs

Jed Adcock

Travis Cloke

Josh Schache

Jackson Trengove

Billy Gowers

Hayden Crozier

Sam Lloyd

Mitch Hannan

Stefan Martin

Tim O’Brien

Ryan Gardner

Oskar Baker

Caleb Poulter

Lachlan Bramble

Nick Coffield

Harsh on Crozier and Lloyd. Crozier managed two top 10 B&F finishes and Sam Lloyd a leading goalkicker award/top 10 B&F finish.

I wasn’t saying they are all failures. Crozier was in relative terms a win (but was also getting a regular game at Freo).

Lloyd was good for a year, and I don’t regret it given we needed to get back into finals that year, but was back to the fringe and retired within 12 months.

It was clear that our bottom tier players struggled to impact when promoted so getting players like Robertson just makes sense to strengthen this. He will have a point to prove and he is an improvement on a few already on our list.
I have a bit more faith in our bottom tier players heading into 2026, particularly our 2024 draft class.

They played a fair bit of senior footy in 2025 but struggled with consistency throughout games which is to be expected. Missing from round 24 was Hynes, Dolan & Jacques. Croft, Arty Jones & Sellwood are the other names I'm confident in. That's a fair chunk of guys that were 24-34 on the list but could possibly move into that 16-24 range with another year under the belt.

The key will be moving on from guys like VDM, McNeil & Poulter that have had 4-5 years to prove themselves at senior level.

It astounds me how based on statistics VDM gets a game... most of the time he comes of with an injury and then gets himself up for the following week. He's a better footballer than me, but based on his output he doesn't rate elite or above average in to many of the important stats

not sold on Sellwood in terms of offensive capabilities coming out of the back line however he gets a full preseason this year to strut his stuff and settle in. However, I am sold on his will and desire to compete at all costs!
