Too late to re-sign Liam Jones...?! 🤔

We aint getting Butts. If Petracca goes to Adelaide he will 100% be part of the deal going the other way.

The Petracca trade won't really be relevant unless Butts nominates Melbourne as his club of choice. If we offer him the right contract and talk him into requesting a trade to us, he can't just be thrown into the Dee's deal.

Can’t understand why we delisted him without being sure of picking up a mature age replacement.
Because the only way he'd get a game next year is if 40 other blokes on our list all got injured.

Guy is beyond cooked and it was clear he was not going to get games next year hence he didn't want to sign a new contract.

The murmurings around Wilkie were always speculative. Fair play to him, he will get paid. The club needs to go after some quality fringe players who are chomping to play. We simply will not land a big fish so to speak because (a) we dont pay overs and (b) we aren’t an 'attractive' club to join. So we need to after a Jai Serong type or players on the fringe at GWS or the lions.

Ultimately the type of player we most need is May and he happens to be of the character we need the least.

Serong is a worse version of what we already have

Saints have used their cap space to put proven afl players around NWM. Overpaid, sure, if they win some finals and get out of purgatory? Worth it.

We salary dumped Macrae and Caleb, could not retain therefore did not have to pay Dunkley and Bailey Smith. We got Darcy on a friendlier deal than he probably would have gotten if he signed it 12 months later. We should have plenty of cap space, and our offer to Wilkie (worth the attempt) shows it. So far we've used it to...give Bailey Dale some extra cash.

It was pretty concerning last trade period when we didn't address the small/pressure forward depth issues which had a couple of guys getting more games than they probably should. That we didn't address it then became a massive problem this year with Cody missing the season - we got exposed trying to carry some limited players that were more liabilities than positive contributors. Not their fault that we didn't have much choice, but it should have been addressed with known quantity talent so that we weren't in that position this year.

That situation looks somewhat more reassuring with Cody to return (but unknown how he'll come back), Dolan, Hynes and AJ improving, but point is, we can't let that repeat with our backline. It has to be addressed. Crossing our fingers and hoping that Buss and JoD will be enough is the exact lack of urgency that has held us back the last 4 years. Maybe they come good. Maybe they don't. Lobb will likely decline too, and he's the best we have now.

If you subscribe to Bevo's flat track high press being a thing because he doesn't trust our backline, then the blame has to fall on Sam Power and the list management team. They then need to actually succeed in getting proven, plus players into the team. Getting contributions and improvements from young talent is good and all but we can't pretend we're so far ahead of the pack in that area it'll actually win us a final. Other teams are obviously good in that area too. We need to be bold.

What's frustrating is how the Bruce, Treloar, Keith and Martin acquisitions very quickly rocketed us into contention for a year yet we seem unable to replicate anything close to those kinds of moves now. It's right there as a lesson for this club. But, still a lot to play out. We shall see.

I’m not actually bothered by this.

People massively overrate the impact of one player and I think clubs are getting sucked into overpaying select individuals way too often.

I’d much rather try to pick the eyes out of the draft (which to be fair to the club we often do in the first round at least) and supplement with solid acquisitions.

I think we did pretty well getting Keath, Bruce and Martin in the lead up to 2021 for the price we did. Treloar was a unicorn. It supplemented our strong base and got us to a grand final.

It’s just a shame Bruce got injured and Martin was a year too old but the idea was sound.

We've clearly got massive cap space free considering the Wilkie offer and weirdly timed extensions for Dale and Lobb.

We really need to go hard and get Butts or someone of similar quality as well as another couple of best 22 players (likely Budarek and Robertson). That boost could be enough to propel us forward like it did with Adelaide.

FF: Weightman, Darcy, West
HF: VDM, Naughton, Robertson
C: Williams, Libba, Davidson
HB: Dale, Lobb, Freijah
FB: Budarek, Butts, JOD
R: English, Bont, Richards
Int: Treloar, Kennedy, Bramble, Harmes, Dolan

Still beleive our main target should be Butters as this improves our overall team more than any other player. Brisbane showed again a dominant midfield wins big games.

Our issue this year is that there are very few players that a A graders in positions of need and those that may come are under contract meaning we will struggle to provide the compensation required to pry them out.

Next years first may well be needed for West and or El Houli if the rules do change.

Pick 10 and steak knives wont cut it. We need to be creative and get at least 2 firsts in the top 10 this year to entice Port Adelaide to move a year early on Butters.

Good luck to the list management team

Cap space is only one part of the equation. Means more next off season when there are some decent free agents available. Don't have that this year

One other thing the Brisbane win showed (much like us in ‘16 and Sydney in ‘12) is that you don’t need A Grade key forwards to win it.

Dominate in the middle and solid forwards will get it done.

If true, it's another year, another failed target. At some point you'd hope we're doing a comprehensive review of our processes, from player ID to communication to offers (both contractual and trade). We can't keep missing our top targets every year. It's particularly striking when you consider how big of a player movement period this is shaping up to be for both contracted and uncontracted players.
100% Yes we tried like we do every year but come up empty. We deserve a participation award. Strong clubs like Hawthorn don’t take no for an answer and get there man in the end no matter what it takes.
